Chapter 8: The Mother Who Chose Fear

I almost deleted the message.

Almost.

Because everything inside me screamed that this was another secret.

Another manipulation.

Another piece of my life being controlled by someone else.

But then I remembered something.

Rachel had lied.

My father had lied.

Mia had lied.

Everyone had been protecting something.

And I was tired of being the last person to know.

“I need to go home.””

My father immediately stood.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I need answers.””

“Then I’m coming with you.””

“No.””

The word came out before I could stop it.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“I need to do this myself.””

He nodded slowly.

“I understand.””

But I knew he didn't.

Not completely.

Because my whole life, everyone had made choices for me.

This time, I needed to make my own.

When I arrived home, Rachel was sitting in the living room.

The house was silent.

No television.

No music.

Nothing.

Just her.

She looked older than she had that morning.

Like years had finally caught up with her.

“You came.””

I stayed near the door.

“Tell me.””

She looked down.

“I know what you found out.””

“Then you know I don't want another lie.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For a moment, she looked like my mother.

Not the woman who ignored me.

Just a tired person who had made terrible choices.

“I need you to understand something.””

“I’m listening.””

She took a breath.

“I never wanted your money.””

I didn't respond.

“Do you believe me?””

“I don't know.””

The honesty hurt her.

But she accepted it.

“I deserve that.””

She opened a drawer beside her.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

“This is what I found.””

I walked closer.

Inside were financial records.

Emails.

Bank statements.

I looked through them.

Then I saw something.

A name.

My father’s.

“What is this?””

Rachel looked nervous.

“Your father’s business.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“He made a decision years ago.””

I turned the page.

My eyes widened.

A loan.

A massive one.

Taken against family assets.

“Why?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Because he was trying to save the company.””

I looked up.

“And?””

“It failed.””

The room went quiet.

“How much?””

She whispered the number.

My chest tightened.

It was more than I could imagine.

“But Dad said everything was fine.””

“He wanted you to believe that.””

I stared at the papers.

“So the inheritance…”

“Was the only thing protecting this family.””

My anger returned.

“So you tried to control it.””

Her eyes filled.

“Yes.””

Finally.

The truth.

“I was terrified.””

“Terrified enough to steal from me?””

She flinched.

“I wasn't going to steal.””

“What were you going to do?””

She looked away.

“I was going to borrow against it.””

“That is not yours.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I know now.””

I sat down.

Because suddenly everything was complicated.

She had hurt me.

But she wasn't trying to become rich.

She was trying to stop everything from falling apart.

And she chose the worst possible way.

“Why didn't you tell Dad?””

Rachel laughed sadly.

“Because your father has always believed he can fix everything.””

I thought about that.

She wasn't completely wrong.

My father carried every problem alone.

Even when it hurt people.

“And you?””

“I believed I could hide everything.””

She looked at me.

“We were both wrong.””

The silence between us was heavy.

Then she said something I didn't expect.

“I was jealous of you.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“You never needed to pretend.””

I stared.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“Mia and I were always chasing approval. But you…”

She smiled sadly.

“You just kept going.””

I didn't know whether to cry or laugh.

Because for years, I thought my silence meant nobody cared.

Maybe people had mistaken my strength for not needing anything.

“I hated that,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because I thought you didn't need me.””

The words hurt.

Because they explained so much.

Not justified.

But explained.

Then the front door opened.

We both froze.

My father stood there.

He had heard.

“How long have you been listening?””

He looked at Rachel.

“Long enough.””

Rachel stood.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“I need to know something.””

She waited.

“Did you ever love me?””

The question broke her.

“Yes.””

Immediately.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you do this?””

Rachel cried.

“Because I was scared of losing everything.””

My father looked at me.

Then at her.

Then away.

For a long time, nobody spoke.

Finally, he said:

“We lost it anyway.””

The words hurt everyone.

Because they were true.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his face changed.

“What happened?””

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“The bank froze the company accounts.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The person who sent those messages wasn't trying to expose us.””

A pause.

“They were warning us.””

Rachel went pale.

“Who?””

My father looked toward the folder.

May you like

Then said:

“Someone who knows exactly how to destroy this family.””
