Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lie
I read the message three times.
Each time, the words felt heavier.
Someone knew about the trust.
Someone knew I had found out.
And someone knew there was more.
My father reached for my phone.
“Who sent that?””
“I don’t know.””
He looked at the number.
“Call it.””
I hesitated.
Something inside me said not to.
But curiosity won.
I pressed the button.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a voice answered.
“Hello, Rachel.””
My mother froze.
Everyone noticed.
Especially my father.
The person on the phone wasn’t talking to me.
They were talking to her.
“Who is this?”” my father demanded.
A pause.
Then a calm voice replied.
“You’re Daniel, right?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
“I wondered when you would finally find out.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Find out what?””
The voice laughed softly.
Not kindly.
“You really don’t know everything.””
My father stepped closer.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.
Then:
“My name is Thomas Reed.””
Rachel immediately stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“Rachel,” my father said quietly.
“Who is Thomas Reed?””
She didn’t answer.
The voice on the phone did.
“I was her lawyer.””
My heart dropped.
“Lawyer?””
“Yes.””
My father’s face changed.
“What kind of lawyer?””
The silence before the answer felt endless.
“Divorce lawyer.””
The room went completely still.
I looked at Rachel.
“Divorce?””
She looked like she couldn’t breathe.
“Not yet,” she whispered.
My father stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas continued.
“It means Rachel came to me six months ago.””
Mia gasped.
“Mom?””
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Stop.””
“No,” my father said.
“Let him speak.””
The voice continued.
“She wanted information about separating assets.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not because my parents had problems.
Every marriage had problems.
But because while I was struggling, while Mia was falling apart, while this family was pretending everything was normal…
Rachel had been planning an escape.
“Why?”” my father asked.
The question sounded painful.
Thomas answered.
“She believed you would eventually choose your daughter over her.””
My father looked confused.
“What daughter?””
The silence was enough.
Then Thomas said:
“Your daughter with the trust.””
Me.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
Rachel whispered:
“That wasn't how it was.””
My father looked at her.
“Then explain.””
She cried.
“I was scared.””
“Of me?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Of what would happen when you found out.””
I shook my head.
“You were going to leave?””
She didn't answer.
That was the answer.
Mia sat down.
“This whole time…”
Her voice cracked.
“You were blaming her because of money?””
Rachel looked at her.
“No.””
But even she didn't believe herself.
My father took the phone.
“Thomas, why are you calling?””
The lawyer replied:
“Because Rachel never finished what she started.””
“What does that mean?””
“She asked me to create documents.””
My father's eyes narrowed.
“What documents?””
“A transfer agreement.””
My stomach dropped.
“What transfer agreement?””
Thomas became quiet.
Then said:
“An agreement that would move control of the trust away from you.””
My father looked at me.
“Impossible.””
“Not impossible.””
Thomas sighed.
“Rachel believed if she controlled the money, she could protect Mia.””
Mia looked horrified.
“Mom.””
“I was trying to help you.””
“No.””
Mia shook her head.
“You were trying to save me from consequences.””
Nobody spoke.
Because that was exactly what my father had said.
Mia always believed love meant protection.
But sometimes protection was just another word for allowing someone to stay broken.
My father ended the call.
The kitchen remained silent.
Then Mia stood.
She looked at Rachel.
“I spent my entire life trying to be what you wanted.””
Rachel started crying.
“I know.””
“No, you don't.””
Mia’s voice shook.
“You made me believe being loved meant being better than everyone else.””
She looked at me.
“And I hated her because I thought she was taking something from me.””
I didn't say anything.
Because she was right.
But so was I.
We were both victims of the same person’s choices.
My father walked toward the window.
“I need everyone to understand something.””
We looked at him.
“This family has been built on secrets.””
He looked at Rachel.
“No more.””
Then he looked at Mia.
“No more excuses.””
Finally, he looked at me.
“And no more pretending you’re invisible.””
My eyes burned.
I looked away.
Because being seen after years of being ignored was almost as painful as being ignored.
Then my father’s phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed instantly.
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“When did this happen?””
Everyone watched him.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He didn’t respond.
He slowly lowered the phone.
“It’s your grandfather’s estate office.””
I frowned.
“Why are they calling?””
My father looked at the papers.
Then at me.
“They found another document.””
My heart started racing.
“What document?””
May you like
His face became serious.
“One that changes everything.””
