Chapter 8: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Nobody moved after the call ended.
The phone screen went dark.
But the name remained in my mind.
Rachel Hayes.
Dead for three years.
Except dead people didn’t call strangers.
They didn’t apologize.
They didn’t say they were the reason someone had been lying.
My father looked like he had seen a ghost.
Maybe he had.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
Finally, he whispered:
“She’s alive.””
Sophie stared at him.
“You knew?””
“No.””
“You just said she’s alive.””
My father ran a hand through his hair.
“I thought she was dead.””
The room felt impossible.
Every answer created five more questions.
“How?”” I asked.
“How could someone fake their own death?””
My father looked at the files.
“Because someone helped them.””
“Who?””
He didn’t say it.
He didn’t need to.
Daniel.
The name hung between us.
Sophie paced across the room.
“This is insane.””
“No,” my father said quietly.
“It’s calculated.””
I looked at him.
“You knew Daniel was dangerous.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he threatened people.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he controlled information.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why did you bring him into our lives?””
My father closed his eyes.
The answer hurt him.
“Because I thought I could use him.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Years ago, Daniel offered to help me build my company. He had connections. Money. Influence.””
“And?””
“And I ignored the warning signs.””
Sophie laughed.
“So you made a deal with a monster and expected him to stay loyal?””
My father didn’t respond.
Because that was exactly what happened.
The front door suddenly opened.
All three of us turned.
My mother stood there.
She looked exhausted.
Like she hadn’t slept.
“Emily.””
I stepped back.
“What are you doing here?””
She looked at my father.
Then Sophie.
Then the files on the table.
Her face changed.
“You found out.””
Nobody answered.
She slowly walked inside.
“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to.””
I stared at her.
“You knew Rachel was alive?””
Her silence answered.
My father looked shocked.
“You knew?””
My mother looked at him.
“I knew enough.””
The anger on my father’s face disappeared.
Replaced by confusion.
“How?””
“Because Daniel told me.””
“Why would he tell you?””
She looked down.
“Because he wanted me to help him destroy you.””
My stomach turned.
“You helped him?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to stop him.””
“Tried?””
I remembered the kiss.
The lies.
The camera.
“Mom, you were with him.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because getting close to Daniel was the only way to find out what he had planned.””
The room went silent.
My father laughed softly.
Not because it was funny.
Because he couldn’t believe it.
“You expect us to believe that?””
“I don’t expect anything from you anymore, Michael.””
That hurt him.
I saw it.
My mother walked toward the table.
She picked up the photo of Rachel.
“She contacted me six months ago.””
Sophie looked up.
“Why?””
“Because she knew Daniel was getting ready to disappear.””
“Disappear?””
My mother nodded.
“He was planning to take everything.””
The company.
The money.
The evidence.
And leave everyone else to take the blame.
I looked at the files.
“That’s why he needed Dad’s secrets.””
“Yes.””
My mother looked at me.
“He knew your father’s past would destroy his reputation.””
“And you?””
She swallowed.
“He knew my affair would destroy mine.””
The honesty shocked me.
For the first time, my mother wasn’t trying to excuse herself.
“I was wrong, Emily.””
Her voice broke.
“I hurt your father. I hurt you. I told myself I was doing it for a reason, but I still made a choice.””
I didn’t know what to feel.
Anger.
Sadness.
Pity.
All of it.
Then my father’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
I moved closer.
“Who is it?””
He answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a video appeared.
My father turned pale.
“What is it?””
He didn’t respond.
He handed me the phone.
The video showed our house.
The living room.
The same camera.
The same angle.
A person walked into frame.
A woman.
Older.
Tired.
Alive.
Rachel Hayes.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she spoke.
“If you’re watching this, it means Daniel knows I found the evidence.””
She took a breath.
“Michael, I need you to understand something.””
My father stepped closer.
Rachel continued.
“The person you’ve been afraid of all these years wasn’t Daniel.””
The video glitched.
Then her final sentence played.
And it changed everything.
“The person controlling Daniel was your wife.””
The screen went black.
Nobody breathed.
My mother whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
My father slowly turned toward her.
May you like
And for the first time…
he looked afraid of her.
