Chapter 4: The Truth Behind the Door
I didn’t go home.
Not immediately.
For the first time in my life, I ignored my father.
Sophie drove us to her apartment.
It was small.
A second-floor place above an old bookstore.
Nothing like my family’s house.
No expensive furniture.
No perfect decorations.
No carefully arranged photos.
Just a real place.
A place where people actually lived.
“I’m sorry,” Sophie said.
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For ruining your family.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t ruin anything.””
She gave me a sad smile.
“You still love him.””
I looked down.
That was the hardest part.
I hated what my father had done.
But he was still my dad.
Love didn’t disappear just because someone disappointed you.
Sometimes that was the cruelest part.
Sophie sat across from me.
“Your mother came here because she wanted to expose him.””
“Expose him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Sophie looked at the floor.
“Because she found out he was planning to leave.””
I froze.
“Leave?””
“She found evidence that he was moving money.””
“What kind of money?””
“A lot.””
The pieces started connecting.
Daniel.
The camera.
The secrets.
The fear.
My father wasn’t just hiding an old daughter.
He was hiding something bigger.
“He was going to leave Mom?””
“Yes.””
“And Mom found out?””
Sophie nodded.
“She came to me because she needed someone who knew the truth.””
I stood up.
“So Mom’s affair with Daniel…”
“Was after she discovered your father’s betrayal.””
I stopped.
That didn’t make it right.
But it changed something.
My family wasn’t a simple story anymore.
There was no hero.
No villain.
Just broken people making choices that hurt everyone around them.
My phone rang.
This time, it was my mother.
I answered.
“Emily?””
Her voice cracked.
“Where are you?””
“Why?””
“Because your father is here.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
“He knows about Sophie.””
Silence.
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked at Sophie.
She looked terrified.
“What did he say?””
My mother hesitated.
Then whispered:
“He said he knows you have the camera footage.””
My blood ran cold.
“How?””
“He installed the cameras.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
My mother’s voice dropped.
“Emily, your father didn’t just monitor the house.””
A pause.
“He monitored us.””
I looked at Sophie.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying those cameras were never for security.””
The room felt colder.
“He was recording everything.””
I remembered my father’s words.
Technology gives me peace of mind.
Suddenly they sounded different.
Not protective.
Possessive.
My mother continued.
“He knew about Daniel before you did.””
I closed my eyes.
“What?””
“He knew.””
The silence after those words was unbearable.
“Then why didn’t he say anything?””
My mother whispered:
“Because Daniel wasn’t the person he was afraid of.””
A noise came from behind Sophie.
The apartment door.
A slow knock.
Both of us froze.
Nobody spoke.
Another knock.
Harder.
Sophie stood slowly.
“Emily…”
I looked at the door.
My phone slipped slightly in my hand.
Then a voice came from the hallway.
A voice I knew better than anyone.
My father.
“Emily.””
My entire body went cold.
“Open the door.””
Sophie grabbed my arm.
“Don’t.””
My father knocked again.
“Please.””
His voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not threatening.
Broken.
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear from him.
“I need to tell you why your mother was never supposed to find your sister.””
May you like
The door handle moved.
And the lock began to turn.
