Chapter 10: The Truth We All Lost

The room went completely silent.

I could hear the clock on the wall.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Like it was counting down to something.

My father stared at Thomas.

“No.””

Thomas didn’t react.

“I know this is hard to accept.””

“No.””

My father’s voice cracked.

“You’re lying.””

Thomas looked at my mother.

“I wish I was.””

Everyone turned.

My mother looked exhausted.

Not surprised.

That was the worst part.

She already knew.

“You knew he was coming,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

The disappointment hurt more than anger.

Because I wanted one person in this family to finally tell the truth before being forced.

“Mom…”

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

I already knew the answer.

Never.

Thomas opened the folder.

Inside were documents.

Emails.

Contracts.

Photographs.

Evidence.

He placed them on the table.

“Daniel was never the person making decisions.””

My father picked up a document.

His hands shook.

“What is this?””

“Financial transfers.””

My father read the page.

Then his face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

He looked at my mother.

“You did this.””

She didn’t deny it.

My father stepped back.

“I don’t understand.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

My mother looked at me.

Then at Sophie.

Then finally at him.

“Because I was tired.””

Nobody spoke.

She continued.

“For twenty years, I lived inside a marriage where I was always the last person to know the truth.””

My father opened his mouth.

She stopped him.

“No, Michael. Listen.””

Her voice shook.

“I found out about Sophie from a stranger.””

Sophie looked down.

“I found out about Daniel from a bank record.””

She wiped her tears.

“I found out about your plans to leave from a lawyer.””

My father looked destroyed.

“You should have talked to me.””

“I tried.””

Silence.

“I tried for years.””

I looked at my father.

He didn’t argue.

Because maybe part of him knew.

My mother had not become this person overnight.

She had become this person slowly.

One secret at a time.

“So you controlled Daniel?”” I asked.

She nodded.

“Not at first.””

She explained.

After discovering Daniel’s crimes, she approached him.

She pretended to want revenge against my father.

She pretended to hate Michael.

Daniel trusted her because he thought she was broken.

Because he underestimated her.

She used his arrogance against him.

But then something changed.

“Power changes people,” Thomas said quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“Your mother started by trying to expose Daniel.””

My mother looked down.

“But?””

Thomas sighed.

“But then she realized she could use him.””

The truth hurt because it sounded familiar.

My mother had become the thing she was fighting.

“I told myself I was doing it for justice,” she whispered.

She looked at me.

“But eventually, I wanted control.””

Nobody moved.

“I wanted everyone who lied to me to feel what it was like.””

My eyes filled.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I understood her pain.

And that made everything harder.

My father sat down.

“I don’t know who you are anymore.””

My mother nodded.

“I don’t either.””

For a moment, nobody was a villain.

Nobody was innocent.

Just people who had hurt each other until there was almost nothing left.

Then Sophie opened one of the documents.

She looked confused.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

She pointed at the page.

“This isn’t about money.””

Thomas frowned.

“What?””

Sophie handed him the paper.

“This account.””

She pointed.

“It belongs to Daniel.””

My father looked closer.

Then his face went pale.

“No.””

“What?””

“He wasn’t stealing from me.””

A cold feeling spread through me.

“What are you saying?””

My father looked at the documents.

“Daniel was stealing from himself.””

Nobody understood.

Then Thomas whispered:

“He created a fake company.””

My mother looked shocked.

“He was planning to frame Michael.””

Everything stopped.

Daniel hadn’t been protecting secrets.

He had been building a trap.

The money.

The cameras.

The footage.

The affair.

Everything.

He wanted my family destroyed because a broken family was easier to control.

Then my phone buzzed.

One final message.

Unknown number.

But this time, I recognized it.

Daniel.

The message was short.

*You finally understand. Good. Now watch what happens when they realize I have the original footage.*

Attached was a video.

My finger hovered over it.

Nobody wanted me to open it.

But everyone knew I had to.

I pressed play.

The screen showed the living room camera.

The night my father left.

The night everything began.

My mother entered.

Daniel followed.

But this time, there was something different.

The camera angle was wider.

A hidden camera.

Daniel’s voice played.

“I know you want revenge.””

My mother’s voice answered.

“Yes.””

Daniel smiled.

“Then let me help you.””

The video continued.

But then came the part nobody expected.

My mother looked directly at the camera.

At the hidden camera.

And smiled.

The video ended.

I looked up.

“Mom.””

She looked at me.

Her face was pale.

“What?””

I held up the phone.

“You knew about the hidden camera.””

Her eyes widened.

“No.””

But Thomas stepped forward.

“Emily.””

Everyone turned.

He looked terrified.

“I know who installed that camera.””

“Who?””

Thomas swallowed.

Then he said the name.

Not Daniel.

Not my mother.

Not my father.

A name that made the entire room go silent.

“Emily.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Thomas pointed at the phone.

“The person who recorded your family…”

May you like

He took a breath.

“…was you.””
