Chapter 9: The Mother Who Signed Away Her Child

Marcus waited until the police had been kept outside the house before confronting Eleanor.

He led her into the study and closed the door.

For the first time since she had returned, he didn't feel anger.

He felt dread.

“What happened the night Clara was born?””

Eleanor sat down slowly.

“I was told she had died.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You just said the transfer order was forged.””

“I said I never signed it.””

“Then what aren't you telling me?””

Eleanor pressed her hands together.

“When I gave birth, the doctor told me Clara had severe complications. They said she needed to be transferred to another hospital immediately.””

“And you agreed?””

“I was barely conscious. I had lost a lot of blood. They put a form in front of me and told me it was a medical authorization.””

“Did you sign it?””

Eleanor looked down.

“Yes.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Then the police may be right.””

“No. Marcus, listen to me. I didn't know what I was signing. I never agreed to give her away.””

He paced across the room.

“Why didn't you tell me this before?””

“Because I didn't remember the signature until Olivia showed me the records.””

“That's convenient.””

Eleanor flinched.

He immediately regretted the words, but he couldn't take them back.

She looked at him with exhausted eyes.

“You think I wanted to lose my daughter?””

“I think everyone in this family has been hiding something.””

“I know.””

“And every time I ask a question, another secret appears.””

“I know.””

He stopped pacing.

“Then tell me everything. No more protecting people. No more half-truths.””

Eleanor nodded.

“When I woke up after the delivery, the baby beside me wasn't Clara. I knew because of the birthmark. I called the nurses, but they told me the original baby had been transferred.””

“Where?””

“They said Savannah.””

“Why didn't you go after her?””

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“I tried to leave the hospital, but Richard arrived with two men. He told me Clara was safe and that if I contacted the police, he would make sure the child disappeared.””

Marcus felt his stomach turn.

“He threatened you?””

“He showed me a photograph of a woman holding a baby. He said if I didn't cooperate, that woman would be killed.””

“Who was the woman?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I never knew.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

Outside, the police were still gathered near the entrance.

“Why did you leave me?””

Eleanor's face crumpled.

“Because Richard told me that if I stayed with you, he would use Lily to control me. He said the child you brought home was the only leverage he had left.””

Marcus turned sharply.

“Lily was a baby!””

“I know.””

“You let me raise her believing she was ours.””

“I loved her.””

“You let me grieve you!””

Eleanor began to cry.

“I thought I could find Clara and come back. I thought it would take weeks, maybe months. But Richard had people watching me. Every time I got close to the truth, someone threatened Lily.””

Marcus sat down heavily.

For six years, he had believed Eleanor was dead.

He had raised their daughter alone, convinced that fate had stolen the woman he loved.

Now he understood that someone had deliberately separated them.

But the person responsible had been his own father.

“Why did you never contact me secretly?”” he asked.

“I did.””

He looked up.

“What?””

“Three times. I sent letters to your office. I called your private number. I even tried to reach Daniel.””

Marcus stared at her.

“I never received anything.””

“I know.””

“Who intercepted them?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Richard's attorney.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Arthur Bell.””

She nodded.

Marcus stood.

“I'm going to find him.””

Eleanor caught his hand.

“Marcus, please. There's something else.””

He turned back.

“What now?””

She swallowed.

“The woman in the hospital photograph wasn't a stranger.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Who was she?””

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

“It was me.””

He stared at her.

“You were holding Clara?””

“Yes.””

“But you said you never saw her after the transfer.””

“I didn't. That photograph was taken before they moved her. Richard showed it to me later, after I escaped the hospital.””

Marcus felt his stomach twist.

“Why would he keep a photograph of you holding the baby?””

“Because he wanted me to believe Clara was alive.””

“Was she?””

“I don't know.””

Eleanor looked toward the study door.

“But I believe Richard had another child hidden somewhere. A child who was supposed to inherit everything if the rest of us failed.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Another child?””

She nodded.

“Richard told me that the Whitmore family would never lose control of the estate because there was always a backup heir.””

Marcus felt his mind racing.

Clara was the biological daughter of Eleanor and Marcus.

Lily had been conceived using Daniel's donor sample.

Vanessa was Catherine's daughter.

But if Richard had hidden another child, then the inheritance scheme was even more complicated than he had imagined.

Before he could ask another question, Daniel knocked on the door.

“Marcus, we have a problem.””

Marcus opened it.

“What?””

“Vanessa is downstairs. She says she wants to make a deal.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Of course she does.””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“She brought Arthur Bell with her.””

Marcus froze.

“Where is he?””

“In the drawing room.””

Marcus looked at Eleanor.

“Stay here with Lily and Clara.””

Eleanor caught his sleeve.

“Don't trust him.””

“I don't trust anyone.””

He walked downstairs.

Arthur Bell stood beside the fireplace, dressed in a dark suit and holding a leather briefcase. He looked older than Marcus remembered, his silver hair thinning and his shoulders bent.

Vanessa sat on the sofa beside him, wearing a simple black dress.

The wedding gown was gone.

So was the wig.

She looked almost ordinary.

That somehow made her more dangerous.

“Marcus,” Arthur said, extending his hand.

Marcus ignored it.

“You have five minutes.””

Arthur lowered his hand.

“I understand you're upset.””

“Don't pretend this is a family disagreement. You helped cover up a crime.””

“I followed instructions.””

“From whom?””

Arthur glanced toward Vanessa.

“From your father.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“My father is dead.””

“And the consequences of his decisions remain.””

Vanessa crossed her legs.

“Can we stop pretending we're here to discuss morality?””

Marcus turned toward her.

“What do you want?””

“The original trust agreement.””

“You stole it.””

“I recovered it.””

“From my house.””

“Your house was built on stolen property.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You threatened my daughter.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Because you left me no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

“Not if I wanted the truth.””

Arthur opened his briefcase and removed a thick document.

“The original trust agreement gives Vanessa a legitimate claim to part of the Whitmore estate. However, the inheritance was contingent on proving that Richard's adoption records were fraudulent.””

Marcus took the document.

The signatures appeared genuine.

But something was wrong.

The page numbering skipped from twelve to fourteen.

He looked up.

“Where is page thirteen?””

Arthur hesitated.

Vanessa's expression changed.

“It's irrelevant.””

“Then why is it missing?””

Arthur adjusted his tie.

“Page thirteen contains a private provision.””

“Read it.””

“I don't think—”

“Read it.””

Arthur sighed.

“The provision states that if any child born to Eleanor Whitmore was found to have been unlawfully transferred, the estate would be placed in a protective trust until the child's identity could be established.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Then why did you help Vanessa challenge the trust?””

“Because she claimed Clara was not your biological daughter.””

“And you believed her?””

Arthur looked away.

“No.””

Marcus felt his blood boil.

“You knew the truth.””

“I suspected it.””

“And you still helped her?””

Arthur's shoulders slumped.

“Your father had a private agreement with my firm. If the trust was challenged, I was to ensure that the estate remained under the control of the Whitmore family.””

Vanessa laughed.

“By handing it to me.””

Arthur turned toward her.

“You were never supposed to use the child as leverage.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You told me the child was the key.””

“I told you the records were the key.””

“You told me I would inherit everything!””

Arthur stood abruptly.

“Because I thought you would follow the agreement!””

Vanessa rose.

“And I thought you would stop lying to me!””

Marcus watched them argue.

For the first time, he understood that the two people who had tried to control his life were not working together anymore.

They were turning on each other.

“Where is page thirteen?”” he asked.

Arthur went silent.

Vanessa looked toward the front door.

Marcus followed her gaze.

A police officer stood in the hallway.

Detective Collins entered the drawing room, followed by two uniformed officers.

“Arthur Bell,” she said, “you're under arrest for conspiracy, falsifying legal documents, and obstruction of justice.””

Arthur's face drained of color.

“You can't arrest me. I haven't done anything.””

Collins held up a document.

“We have testimony from Dr. Olivia Grant, financial records linking your firm to the fraudulent transfers, and a recorded confession from Reverend Hensley.””

Arthur looked at Marcus.

“You can't let them do this.””

Marcus stepped aside.

“I didn't make you do anything.””

The officers took Arthur by the arms.

As they led him away, he turned back.

“Marcus, you need to know something. Your father didn't create the switch to protect the family.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Then why did he do it?””

Arthur swallowed.

“Because he was afraid of what would happen if the original heir came home.””

“Clara?””

Arthur shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa's face went white.

Arthur looked directly at Marcus.

“Clara was never the child your father feared.””

The officers pulled him toward the door.

Marcus took a step forward.

“Who was?””

Arthur's voice echoed down the hallway.

“Lily.””

Then he was gone.

Marcus returned to the study, his thoughts racing.

Eleanor stood near the window.

Clara sat beside Lily on the bed, holding the child's hand.

When Marcus entered, all three looked up.

“Arthur says Lily was the child my father feared,” Marcus said.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Clara's expression tightened.

Lily looked confused.

“Why would Grandpa Richard be afraid of me?””

Marcus knelt beside her.

“I don't know, sweetheart.””

Eleanor slowly turned from the window.

“I do.””

Marcus looked up.

“Then tell me.””

Eleanor's hands trembled.

“When Richard discovered that the hospital records had been altered, he ordered a second DNA test. He wanted to know whether the child he brought home was biologically connected to the Whitmore family.””

“And?””

“The test showed that Lily carried a rare genetic marker associated with the original Whitmore bloodline.””

Marcus frowned.

“What marker?””

Eleanor shook her head.

“I don't understand the science. But Richard believed the marker proved that Lily was the rightful heir.””

“Then why did he try to hide her?””

“Because the test also showed something else.””

Marcus waited.

Eleanor looked at Lily.

“The marker matched a genetic profile that belonged to someone Richard had spent his entire life trying to erase.””

Lily's eyes widened.

“Who?””

Eleanor swallowed.

“Your grandmother.””

Marcus went completely still.

“My mother?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Margaret Whitmore wasn't your biological grandmother. She was the woman who raised your father. But the genetic marker showed that Lily was descended from the woman who originally founded the Whitmore fortune.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Who was that?””

Eleanor's voice dropped to a whisper.

“Catherine Bell's mother.””

The room fell silent.

Marcus looked toward the door, where Vanessa had disappeared.

If Eleanor was telling the truth, then Vanessa's connection to the family was more complicated than anyone had realized.

She might not have been Richard's biological daughter.

But she could still have a legitimate claim to the inheritance through Catherine.

And Lily might be the only person whose DNA could prove it.

Marcus turned toward Clara.

“Did you know about this?””

Clara shook her head.

“No.””

Daniel appeared in the doorway, holding his phone.

“Marcus, the detective called. They found something in Arthur's office.””

Marcus stood.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“They found page thirteen.””

Marcus felt his heart pound.

“What does it say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“It names the final beneficiary of the Whitmore estate.””

He held out the phone.

The document showed a single name.

*Lily Eleanor Whitmore.*

Beneath it was a handwritten condition.

*The inheritance shall transfer only when the child is reunited with her biological mother and the original heir publicly acknowledges her identity.*

Marcus looked up.

“Her biological mother?””

Eleanor began to cry.

Clara stood slowly.

Lily looked from one woman to the other.

“Which one of you is my mommy?””

No one answered.

Then the front door opened.

Vanessa returned, holding a sealed envelope.

She looked directly at Marcus.

“I know the answer,” she said.

She placed the envelope on the table.

“And so does the woman who gave birth to Lily.””

Marcus stared at her.

“Who?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered the words that made Eleanor collapse into the nearest chair.

“It's not Eleanor.””

May you like

She pointed toward Clara.

“It's her.””
