Chapter 7: The Signature That Destroyed Everything

“That's impossible.””

Eleanor's voice was barely audible, but Marcus heard it over the detective's words.

He stared at her.

“Did you authorize the transfer?””

“No.””

“Is that your signature?””

“I've never seen that document.””

Detective Collins was still speaking through the phone.

“Mr. Whitmore, we need Mrs. Whitmore to come in for questioning. The transfer was recorded three days after Lily's birth, and the authorization includes her full legal name.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Give us an hour.””

“I'm afraid I can't—”

“An hour, Detective. If Eleanor refuses to cooperate, I'll bring her to the station myself.””

He ended the call.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Daniel stood near the doorway, still holding the first DNA report. Eleanor remained beside the bed, her arms wrapped around Lily. The child watched her parents with wide, frightened eyes.

Marcus placed the phone on the dresser.

“Eleanor, look at me.””

She slowly raised her head.

“Did you ever sign anything at the hospital after Lily was born?””

“No.””

“Think carefully.””

“I have thought about this for six years.””

“Then why does the hospital have your signature?””

“I don't know!””

Her voice cracked.

Lily flinched.

Eleanor immediately knelt beside her.

“I'm sorry, baby. I didn't mean to shout.””

Lily stepped away.

“Everybody keeps saying they don't know.””

Eleanor's face crumpled.

Marcus wanted to comfort his daughter, but he couldn't stop looking at the woman who had returned from the dead.

He had believed that finding Eleanor would finally end the nightmare.

Instead, every answer had opened another door.

“Daniel,” he said, “get the car ready. We're going to St. Catherine's.””

Daniel nodded.

Marcus turned toward Eleanor.

“You're coming with us.””

She hesitated.

“Marcus, if the hospital records are real, someone may be trying to frame me.””

“Then we'll prove it.””

“And if we can't?””

He looked at Lily.

“Then we'll keep asking questions until we can.””

Eleanor wiped her cheeks.

“There's something else you need to know.””

Marcus waited.

“When I gave birth to Lily, there was another woman in the room.””

“Who?””

“I never saw her face clearly. She wore a surgical mask and a blue hospital gown. She told me there had been complications and that the baby needed additional tests.””

Marcus frowned.

“You never mentioned this before.””

“Because I thought she was a nurse. I was exhausted. I'd been given medication, and I could barely keep my eyes open.””

“What happened next?””

“They took Lily away. When they brought her back, I noticed a small mark on her shoulder was missing.””

Marcus stared at her.

“What mark?””

“A little brown birthmark, just below her left shoulder blade. I remembered it because I thought it looked like a tiny heart.””

Lily touched her shoulder.

“I have a mark there.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Yes, sweetheart. But when they brought you back to me that night, the baby had no mark.””

Marcus felt cold.

“Why didn't you question it?””

“I did. The nurse told me newborn skin changed quickly and that I was probably remembering it incorrectly.””

“And you believed her?””

“I wanted to believe her.””

Eleanor looked toward the window.

“By the time I realized something was wrong, the hospital had discharged us. Richard told me not to make trouble because the baby was healthy and the hospital would investigate if I filed a complaint.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“My father knew?””

“He knew something had happened. I don't know how much.””

“Did he ever explain why he kept quiet?””

“No.””

Marcus turned toward Daniel.

“Call the hospital. Tell them we're coming.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

Before he could dial, the front doorbell rang.

A security guard hurried upstairs.

“Mr. Whitmore, there's a woman downstairs asking to see you.””

Marcus was already exhausted.

“Tell her I'm busy.””

“She says her name is Dr. Olivia Grant.””

Eleanor went rigid.

Marcus noticed.

“Who is that?””

Eleanor's lips parted.

“The doctor who delivered Lily.””

Dr. Olivia Grant sat in the drawing room with a leather handbag resting on her knees. She was in her early sixties, with silver hair pulled into a neat bun and a gold watch strapped around her wrist.

She looked composed until Marcus entered.

Then her fingers began to tremble.

“Mr. Whitmore,” she said, standing.

“Thank you for agreeing to see me.””

“I didn't agree. You arrived uninvited.””

“I understand.””

“Then start explaining why you came.””

Olivia glanced at Eleanor.

For a moment, the two women stared at each other.

“You're alive,” the doctor whispered.

Eleanor folded her arms.

“You sound disappointed.””

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“I'm ashamed.””

Marcus gestured toward a chair.

“Sit down.””

She obeyed.

“Did you authorize the transfer of my daughter after her birth?””

“No.””

“Did Eleanor?””

“No.””

“Then whose signature is on that document?””

Olivia reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“The original transfer order was signed by someone else. The document the police found was created later.””

Marcus snatched the paper.

It was a copy of an internal hospital report.

At the bottom, a note had been written in red ink.

*Transfer authorized under emergency guardianship order. Requested by Richard Whitmore.*

Marcus looked up.

“My father?””

Olivia nodded.

“He arrived at the hospital shortly after the birth. He said there was a threat against the family and that the baby needed to be moved somewhere safe.””

“Where?””

“He didn't tell me.””

“Who approved it?””

Olivia swallowed.

“I did.””

Eleanor stood abruptly.

“You told me the baby was in the nursery!””

“I was instructed to tell you that.””

“You let me hold another woman's child!””

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

“I was told the original baby would be returned within hours.””

“But she wasn't!””

“I know.””

Eleanor's hands shook.

“Do you have any idea what that did to me? I spent six years believing my daughter was dead. I watched Marcus raise a child I thought was mine while someone else held the baby I had given birth to.””

Olivia covered her mouth.

“I know what I did was wrong.””

“No,” Eleanor whispered.

“You know what you did was convenient.””

Marcus placed the document on the table.

“Who ordered the switch?””

Olivia looked toward Lily, who had been sitting silently beside Daniel.

“Your grandfather, Dr. Samuel Whitmore, arranged the original records. But the transfer was carried out under instructions from Richard.””

Marcus frowned.

“Why would Richard take his own granddaughter?””

“Because he believed someone was trying to manipulate the Whitmore inheritance through the children.””

“Who?””

Olivia hesitated.

“Margaret.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“My mother was dead before Lily was born.””

“Margaret had been gone for years,” Olivia said.

“But she had left instructions with a private attorney. Those instructions required a DNA test before any child born to Eleanor could inherit the Whitmore trust.””

Marcus looked at Lily.

“And?””

Olivia's eyes filled with tears.

“The test showed that the child Eleanor delivered was not genetically related to you.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked down at her hands.

Marcus felt a terrible pressure in his chest.

“You're saying Lily isn't my biological daughter.””

“I'm saying the test showed that the baby in the nursery was not biologically related to you.””

“Was she related to Eleanor?””

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.””

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

The DNA report identifying Daniel as Lily's father had suddenly become more important than ever.

“Then how does Daniel fit into this?””

Olivia looked at him.

“Mr. Brooks was the biological father of the baby who was registered as Lily Whitmore.””

Daniel's face went white.

“But I never slept with Eleanor.””

“I believe you,” Olivia said quietly.

Marcus stepped forward.

“Then how is that possible?””

Olivia took a deep breath.

“Because the child was conceived through a donor arrangement.””

Eleanor stared at her.

“What?””

“You and Marcus were struggling to conceive. Richard arranged for a fertility clinic to use an anonymous donor. Daniel's sample was used without his knowledge, after it was collected during a routine medical screening.””

Daniel staggered backward.

“You're saying someone used my DNA to create their child?””

Olivia nodded.

“Richard believed Daniel's family had no known genetic disorders and that his background would make the child a suitable heir. He never intended to tell either of you.””

Marcus stared at the doctor.

“You're telling me my father arranged for my daughter to be conceived using my best friend's DNA without our consent?””

“Yes.””

Daniel sank into a chair.

“Oh, my God.””

Marcus felt rage rise so quickly that his vision blurred.

“My father decided who my daughter would be. He arranged a pregnancy behind our backs. Then he took the child Eleanor actually gave birth to and sent her somewhere else.””

Olivia lowered her head.

“Yes.””

“And you helped him.””

“Yes.””

Marcus turned away, pressing his palms against his eyes.

For years, he had worshipped his father's judgment. He had believed Richard's rules were harsh because the world was harsh, and that every decision had been made to protect the family.

Now he understood that his father had treated the people he loved like pieces on a chessboard.

Lily slipped from her chair and approached him.

“Daddy?””

He lowered his hands.

She looked frightened.

“Am I still your little girl?””

Marcus dropped to his knees.

“You have always been my little girl.””

“But Daniel is my father too?””

He looked toward Daniel.

Daniel's face crumpled.

Marcus pulled Lily into his arms.

“Daniel helped give you life, sweetheart. But I have been here for every birthday, every nightmare, every scraped knee, and every bedtime story. Nothing can take that away.””

Lily began to cry.

“Then why did everyone keep it a secret?””

Marcus had no answer.

Olivia did.

“Because the adults were afraid of losing control.””

Lily looked at her.

“Then they shouldn't have had children.””

The words were so simple that nobody knew how to respond.

Olivia began to sob.

Marcus held Lily until her breathing settled.

Then he stood.

“Where is the original child? The baby Eleanor gave birth to?””

Olivia looked toward the door.

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not.””

“You delivered her!””

“And Richard took her before I could record the transfer destination.””

Marcus grabbed the back of a chair.

“Where did he take her?””

Olivia reached into her handbag again and removed a small envelope.

“This was left in my office six years ago. I was told to destroy it, but I couldn't.””

She handed it to Marcus.

Inside was a photograph of a little girl standing beside a woman in a blue coat.

The child had dark curls, a small crescent-shaped scar near her left temple, and a familiar smile.

On the back was a date and a location.

*Savannah, Georgia. October 18.*

Beneath it, someone had written:

*She's safe with the Bells. Do not let Margaret's people find her.*

Marcus stared at the photograph.

The child was approximately the same age as Lily.

He looked up at Eleanor.

“Who are the Bells?””

Eleanor's face drained of color.

“Catherine's family.””

“Then Vanessa knows where our daughter is.””

Olivia nodded.

“And she has known for years.””

Marcus looked toward the window.

Outside, a black sedan had pulled into the driveway.

A woman stepped out, wearing a cream-colored coat and carrying a small suitcase.

She looked directly at the house.

Then she raised her face toward the upstairs windows.

Marcus felt his heart stop.

The woman looked exactly like Eleanor.

But she wasn't Eleanor.

And she wasn't Vanessa.

She was a third woman.

A woman who had been hiding in plain sight for eight years.

Olivia whispered, “That's the child who was taken from the nursery.””

Marcus stared at her.

“That's impossible. She's an adult.””

Olivia shook her head.

“No, Mr. Whitmore.””

May you like

She pointed toward the window.

“That's the girl who was switched with Lily.””
