Chapter 9: The Sister Who Wore My Wedding Ring

The courthouse was already surrounded by reporters when we arrived.

Nathaniel had called three attorneys, two federal investigators, and the chief executive of Callaway Holdings.

None of them could explain how Richard had managed to obtain an emergency court order so quickly.

The petition was simple.

It declared that Nathaniel Callaway, Rose Carter, and Victoria Sterling were unable to make independent legal decisions due to alleged psychological instability and family manipulation.

If approved, their inheritance rights would be suspended.

A court-appointed administrator would control the family estate.

That administrator was Harold Whitmore.

“It's absurd,” Nathaniel said as we entered the courthouse.

His attorney, Amelia Brooks, walked beside him.

“Absurd doesn't mean harmless.””

“Can you stop it?””

“I can challenge it. But we need evidence.””

I looked at her.

“We have a kidnapped mother, altered birth records, a murder attempt, and a recording of Richard threatening us.””

“Those things are useful. But the petition claims the family records themselves are unreliable.””

Nathaniel stopped.

“What?””

Amelia opened her briefcase.

“Richard has submitted an alternative set of birth certificates. According to those documents, you and Victoria are the biological children of Grace and Daniel, while Rose is listed as a child adopted by Eleanor.””

I stared at her.

“They're reversing everything?””

“Exactly.””

Nathaniel clenched his jaw.

“Then we show them the original records.””

Amelia shook her head.

“That's where the problem begins.””

She removed a document.

“The original hospital has no record of triplets. The doctor who signed the birth certificates died twelve years ago. The nurse who assisted Grace has disappeared.””

My mother had warned us.

Richard had spent decades making sure the truth could never be proven.

I looked at Nathaniel.

“Where is Lily?””

He shook his head.

“Still missing.””

We entered the courtroom.

Harold Whitmore sat at the front beside Richard.

Victoria stood behind them.

She was no longer wearing her wedding dress.

Instead, she wore a cream-colored suit, her hair pulled back, and the same diamond necklace she had worn during the ceremony.

She looked composed.

Almost peaceful.

When she saw us, she smiled.

“Hello, brother.””

Nathaniel didn't answer.

I stared at her.

“Where is Lily?””

Victoria's smile faded.

“Who's Lily?””

“Don't.””

She leaned closer.

“You don't know what you're talking about.””

“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””

Victoria glanced toward Richard.

He gave her a small nod.

Then she turned back to me.

“You should be careful, Rose. People who ask too many questions tend to lose everything.””

I stepped forward.

“You already tried to kill Eleanor.””

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“Eleanor isn't innocent.””

“She raised Nathaniel.””

“She stole my life.””

I stared at her.

“She never even knew you were Lily until recently.””

Victoria laughed.

“That's what she told you?””

“Yes.””

“Then you've been fooled again.””

Before I could answer, the bailiff called everyone to order.

The judge entered.

He was a thin man with silver-framed glasses and a tired expression.

Judge Whitmore.

Harold's brother.

The hearing began.

Harold stood first.

“Your Honor, this case concerns a wealthy family whose internal conflicts have become increasingly dangerous. My clients are seeking temporary protection from individuals who have repeatedly demonstrated emotional instability.””

Amelia rose.

“My clients are not seeking protection. They are being targeted by a man who has falsified their family records for nearly three decades.””

Harold smiled.

“An extraordinary accusation.””

“Supported by evidence.””

“What evidence?””

Amelia held up the original birth certificates.

“These documents were recovered from a hidden safe inside the Callaway family chapel.””

Harold examined them.

Then he laughed.

“Your Honor, these documents have no verified chain of custody.””

Amelia remained calm.

“We also have a letter written by Grace Callaway, the children's biological mother.””

Harold's expression changed slightly.

“A letter from a woman whose identity is disputed?””

My stomach tightened.

He was trying to erase my mother again.

Judge Whitmore leaned forward.

“Where is this Grace Callaway?””

Amelia answered.

“She is under police protection following an attempted kidnapping.””

Harold stood.

“Your Honor, that is precisely the kind of sensational claim I warned you about.””

The judge raised his hand.

“Enough.””

He looked at Nathaniel.

“Mr. Callaway, do you understand the allegations being made?””

“Yes.””

“Do you believe you are capable of managing your affairs?””

Nathaniel looked directly at him.

“I've managed a multibillion-dollar company for six years. I believe I'm capable of managing my own life.””

The judge turned toward me.

“Miss Carter, do you understand the legal proceedings?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Do you understand that your biological relationship to the Callaway family is being disputed?””

“Yes.””

“Do you have anything to say?””

I stood.

“I spent seventeen years believing my mother was dead. I spent twenty-nine years believing I was an only child. I discovered the truth at a wedding where my brother's bride tried to murder his mother.””

A murmur spread through the courtroom.

I continued.

“My family didn't become unstable because we discovered the truth. We became unstable because one man spent twenty-nine years making sure we never could.””

I looked at Richard.

“And he is sitting right there.””

Richard didn't move.

But his hand tightened around his cane.

Harold rose again.

“Your Honor, this emotional display demonstrates exactly why temporary guardianship is necessary.””

Amelia objected.

The judge called for order.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman entered wearing a dark blue coat.

She walked slowly.

Her hair was dark.

Her eyes were familiar.

And around her wrist was a silver bracelet with three tiny charms.

A rose.

A star.

A lily.

My mother had made that bracelet.

I stood.

“Lily?””

The woman stopped.

Then she looked at Nathaniel.

“Nate?””

Nathaniel's face crumpled.

“Lily.””

Victoria Sterling was no longer standing behind Richard.

She was standing in the courtroom doorway.

And she was staring at the woman who had just entered.

For the first time, Victoria looked genuinely terrified.

The woman walked toward us.

She looked at me.

“I'm sorry.””

I shook my head.

“Who are you?””

She swallowed.

“My name is Lily Grace Sterling.””

Nathaniel approached her.

“Are you our sister?””

She nodded.

Then she turned toward Victoria.

“And so is she.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

Lily pointed toward Victoria.

“Victoria is my sister. But she isn't the person you think she is.””

Richard suddenly stood.

“That's enough.””

Lily ignored him.

She reached into her coat and removed a small recorder.

“I have the original adoption documents.””

Harold moved toward her.

The bailiff blocked him.

Lily pressed play.

A man's voice filled the courtroom.

Richard's voice.

“You will sign the papers tomorrow. Once you do, the three children will have no claim to the estate.””

Another voice answered.

Victoria.

“And if they refuse?””

Richard laughed.

“Then we use the hospital records. The girl has been declared unstable. The boy will be declared incompetent. And Rose will be treated as an impostor.””

Victoria's recorded voice trembled.

“What about Lily?””

Richard's answer was chilling.

“Lily will remain exactly where she is. Nobody believes a child who has been told her entire life that she's mentally ill.””

The recording continued.

Then came a sentence that made every person in the courtroom go silent.

“Once the paperwork is complete, we'll finally be able to correct the mistake Grace made when she gave birth.””

The recording ended.

Judge Whitmore removed his glasses.

Harold immediately stood.

“This recording is fabricated!””

Lily looked at him.

“Then explain why your voice is on the second recording.””

She pressed another button.

Harold's voice filled the room.

“Richard, we need to eliminate the original birth certificates before the hearing.””

Richard answered.

“They're already gone.””

“And Eleanor?””

“She won't be a problem much longer.””

Nathaniel turned toward Richard.

“You planned to kill your own daughter?””

Richard's expression hardened.

“She stopped being my daughter when she betrayed me.””

Lily stepped forward.

“That's what you told me too.””

Richard stared at her.

“You should have stayed in the clinic.””

Lily's eyes filled.

“You told me my mother abandoned me.””

“She did.””

“No.””

Lily shook her head.

“She left me a letter.””

She held up a folded piece of paper.

“Eleanor gave it to me three weeks ago.””

Richard's face changed.

Lily unfolded it.

My darling Lily,

I don't know how many years have passed since I last held you. I don't know whether you remember my voice or the songs I used to sing.

But I want you to know that I never abandoned you.

I searched for you every day.

I loved you before I knew your name.

I love you now.

And I will love you until my last breath.

Mom.

Lily began crying.

Nathaniel pulled her into his arms.

I joined them.

For the first time in twenty-nine years, the three of us stood together.

But the moment didn't last.

A loud bang came from the courtroom entrance.

Police officers rushed inside.

One of them approached the judge.

“Your Honor, we have a situation.””

The judge frowned.

“What?””

“Richard Callaway is wanted in connection with multiple kidnapping and attempted murder investigations.””

Richard slowly reached for his cane.

Harold stepped backward.

Victoria started crying.

But then Richard smiled.

“Arrest me if you want.””

The officer moved toward him.

Richard raised his voice.

“Go ahead. But before you do, ask Lily why she came here today.””

Everyone turned toward her.

Lily looked confused.

“What?””

Richard laughed.

“Tell them what you did to Grace.””

Nathaniel stepped forward.

“Don't listen to him.””

Richard continued.

“Tell them who actually signed the original adoption papers.””

Lily shook her head.

“That's not true.””

Richard smiled.

“Then perhaps the court should hear the last recording.””

He reached into his jacket.

The police officer immediately grabbed his arm.

But Richard was already pressing a button on a small device.

A voice echoed through the courtroom.

My mother's voice.

“I'm sorry, Lily. I had no choice. I signed the papers because I wanted Rose and Nathaniel to live.””

I stared at Lily.

She lowered her head.

Nathaniel stepped away from her.

“What papers?””

Lily's tears fell.

Then she whispered the words none of us expected.

“Mom signed away one of us to save the other two.””

The courtroom fell silent.

And when Lily finally looked up, she was staring directly at me.

May you like

“Rose,” she whispered.

“I'm the reason you were allowed to go home with Mom.””
