Chapter 5: The Man From My Past

I couldn't breathe.

For a moment, the room seemed to tilt around me.

Ethan.

The man I had once promised to spend my life with.

The man who had disappeared from my world after our marriage collapsed.

The man who hadn't called to ask about Grace.

Not once.

And now he had walked into the Sterling Grand with the woman who had slapped me.

"Dad," I whispered.

My father moved closer.

"Sweetheart?""

"That's Ethan.""

"I know.""

I stared at the photograph.

"Why was he here?""

Daniel enlarged the image on his tablet.

Ethan was wearing a gray suit and carrying a black leather briefcase. His hair was shorter than I remembered, and he looked thinner.

Victoria stood beside him, speaking into her phone.

They appeared comfortable together.

Almost familiar.

My stomach turned.

"How long were they together?""

Daniel checked the footage.

"Approximately twenty-three minutes before Mrs. Hale approached you.""

My father looked toward Catherine.

"Did Marcus know Mr. Cole was coming?""

Catherine nodded reluctantly.

"According to the visitor log, yes.""

"Did he authorize the meeting?""

"Apparently.""

My father turned to Daniel.

"Get Marcus in here.""

Within minutes, the manager entered the lounge.

His face was pale.

"Mr. Brooks?""

My father pointed to the photograph.

"Do you recognize these two people?""

Marcus glanced at the screen.

"Yes.""

"Who are they?""

"Mrs. Hale and Mr. Ethan Cole.""

"Why were they here?""

Marcus shifted his weight.

"Mrs. Hale requested a private meeting.""

"With Ethan Cole?""

"Yes.""

"What was the purpose?""

"I wasn't told.""

My father stared at him.

"You weren't told, or you didn't ask?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Mr. Brooks, I don't believe this is relevant to the incident involving Ms. Brooks.""

I stood up.

"Relevant? My ex-husband came into this hotel with the woman who assaulted me!""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"I understand your concern.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You don't understand anything.""

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

"Danielle, let me handle this.""

Then he looked at Marcus.

"Who arranged the meeting?""

"Mrs. Hale contacted me yesterday.""

"And what did she ask for?""

"A private room. She said it was a confidential business discussion.""

"Did she mention my daughter?""

Marcus hesitated.

"She mentioned that she might encounter someone she had a personal disagreement with.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

Marcus looked at me.

"She asked whether you were expected to visit the property.""

Silence.

I took a step backward.

"She knew I was coming?""

Marcus nodded slowly.

"She asked about you yesterday.""

My father went completely still.

"Why didn't you inform security?""

"I didn't think it was necessary.""

"Why?""

Marcus looked down.

"Mrs. Hale said she wanted to resolve a private family matter.""

I laughed bitterly.

"By slapping me?""

He didn't answer.

My father turned to Catherine.

"Do you see what we're dealing with?""

Catherine nodded.

"Yes, sir.""

"Marcus, I want your access credentials suspended pending an investigation. You are not to access guest records, security recordings, or internal incident reports.""

Marcus looked horrified.

"You're suspending me?""

"I'm protecting the investigation.""

"But I've worked here for twelve years.""

"And today you used your position to protect someone who assaulted a guest.""

Marcus's mouth opened.

My father continued.

"You will have an opportunity to provide a statement. Until then, you will not interfere.""

Catherine stepped forward.

"Marcus, please come with me.""

He looked at me one last time.

"I'm sorry this happened.""

I stared at him.

"Are you sorry because I was hurt, or because you finally discovered who my father is?""

He lowered his eyes.

He didn't answer.

Catherine escorted him out.

I sat back down.

Grace was sleeping peacefully in my arms, completely unaware that the man who had once shared my home was now part of this nightmare.

My father pulled a chair beside me.

"Do you want to tell me about Ethan?""

I looked at him.

"There's not much to tell.""

"Then tell me what you remember.""

I took a deep breath.

Ethan and I had met when I was twenty-one.

He was charming, ambitious, and always seemed to know what to say. He worked in finance and often talked about building something of his own.

We married two years later.

For a while, I believed I had found the person I'd grow old with.

Then his work began consuming him.

He became secretive.

He started receiving calls late at night.

Sometimes he'd leave the apartment and return hours later without explaining where he'd been.

When I asked questions, he accused me of not supporting his career.

The final argument happened when I was six months pregnant.

I had discovered a stack of financial documents in his home office. Some contained names of companies I recognized from his work.

I asked him about them.

He became furious.

"Danielle, stay out of things you don't understand.""

"I was just cleaning your desk.""

"Then stop touching my things.""

I remembered standing in the doorway, holding a folder.

"Ethan, why are you so angry?""

He had stared at me.

"Because you're making my life harder.""

That sentence stayed with me.

A few weeks later, he moved out.

He told me the marriage was over.

He didn't fight for custody arrangements.

He didn't ask to attend Grace's birth.

He simply signed the divorce papers and disappeared.

I finished the story quietly.

My father listened without interrupting.

When I was done, he looked at Grace.

"That man doesn't deserve the privilege of hurting you again.""

I nodded.

But something bothered me.

"Why would Victoria bring him here?""

My father glanced at Daniel.

"Find him.""

Daniel was already checking the visitor records.

"His vehicle is still in the underground parking garage.""

"Good. Ask him to come upstairs.""

A few minutes later, there was a knock.

Ethan entered.

The moment he saw me, he stopped.

"Danielle.""

I didn't respond.

He looked at Grace.

"That's the baby?""

I felt anger rise so quickly that it almost frightened me.

"Her name is Grace.""

He nodded awkwardly.

"Right. Grace.""

My father stood.

"Ethan Cole.""

Ethan extended his hand.

"Mr. Brooks.""

My father didn't take it.

"Why are you here?""

Ethan glanced toward Daniel.

"I was meeting with Mrs. Hale.""

"About what?""

"Business.""

"What business?""

Ethan shifted his briefcase.

"An investment opportunity.""

My father stared at him.

"With Victor Hale's wife?""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Yes.""

I finally spoke.

"Why were you asking about me?""

He looked at me.

"I wasn't.""

"Marcus says you were here before I arrived.""

"That was a coincidence.""

"Victoria knew my name.""

Ethan looked away.

"Danielle, you don't understand the situation.""

I laughed once.

"That's what you always said when you were hiding something.""

His expression hardened.

"Can we speak privately?""

"No.""

He looked at my father.

"This is between Danielle and me.""

My father stepped forward.

"She said no.""

Ethan sighed.

"Fine.""

He placed his briefcase on the table.

Then he removed a folder.

"Mrs. Hale contacted me because she believes there are documents in your father's company that could affect an old acquisition.""

My father didn't touch the folder.

"What documents?""

Ethan hesitated.

"Evidence of financial misconduct.""

"By whom?""

Ethan looked at me.

Then he said something that made my stomach drop.

"By Robert Brooks.""

I stared at him.

My father didn't move.

Daniel's expression became unreadable.

Ethan opened the folder and slid a document across the table.

It contained my father's company logo.

A signature.

A transaction record.

And a date from three years earlier.

I looked at my father.

"Dad?""

He studied the page.

Then he slowly turned it around.

"This is not an authentic document.""

Ethan frowned.

"What?""

My father pointed to the signature.

"That isn't mine.""

Ethan shook his head.

"That's the copy I received.""

My father looked at Daniel.

"Get legal on the phone.""

Ethan suddenly seemed nervous.

"Wait. I didn't create this.""

"I didn't accuse you of creating it.""

"Mrs. Hale told me it was legitimate.""

My father looked directly at him.

"Then perhaps you should ask her why she gave you a forged document.""

Ethan closed the folder.

"That's not what she told me.""

I watched him.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely frightened.

I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"Ethan, why did you really leave me?""

He stared at the floor.

"Danielle...""

"Was it because of your job?""

Silence.

"Was it because of the Hale investigation?""

He swallowed.

"I was trying to protect you.""

I shook my head.

"Protect me from what?""

He looked up.

"From what they were going to do.""

My father stepped closer.

"Who?""

Ethan's eyes moved toward the door.

Then he lowered his voice.

"Victor Hale.""

Before anyone could respond, his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His face changed.

He declined the call.

It rang again.

This time, my father noticed the name.

"Who's calling?""

Ethan hesitated.

Then he turned the phone around.

VICTOR HALE.

My father stared at the screen.

"Answer it.""

Ethan shook his head.

"Mr. Brooks, you don't understand.""

My father held his gaze.

"Then explain.""

Ethan finally answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through the speaker.

It was deep, controlled, and unmistakably angry.

"Why are you still in that building?""

Ethan looked at me.

"Because things have changed.""

The voice grew colder.

"I told you not to speak to Danielle.""

My blood turned to ice.

My father reached for the phone.

May you like

But before he could take it, Victor said something that made every person in the room go silent.

"If Robert knows about the baby, the entire plan is finished.""
