Chapter 7: The Night Nobody Remembered

The next morning, I found my father sitting alone in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where I had begged for food.

The same place where Denise made me feel invisible.

But everything was different now.

The locks were gone.

The pantry was open.

The refrigerator was full.

Small things.

Things that should have been normal.

Things I had forgotten I deserved.

Dad looked up.

“You didn't sleep.””

I shook my head.

“Neither did you.””

He gave a tired smile.

“I was afraid.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Of what?””

He looked at me.

“Losing you.””

I sat across from him.

For years, I wanted him to notice.

Now that he did, I didn't know what to say.

“Dad?””

“Yes?””

“Why didn't you tell me about the night Mom disappeared?””

His expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Who told you?””

I showed him the message.

He read it.

His face became pale.

“Maya…”

“Is it true?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

My heart sank.

“You did know something.””

He closed his eyes.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Then why?””

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I hated those words.

Everyone used them.

Protecting you.

Keeping you safe.

And somehow, it always meant keeping me in the dark.

“What happened?””

Dad sat back.

“Your mother’s accident wasn't an accident.””

The room became silent.

I waited.

“Eight years ago, your mother was investigating something.””

“What?””

“Money missing from my company.””

Richard.

I already knew.

Dad nodded.

“She found evidence that someone was stealing from me.””

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

My hands tightened.

“Then why didn't you tell anyone?””

“Because the night she disappeared, I received a call.””

“From who?””

Dad looked down.

“Richard.””

My stomach twisted.

“He told me Emily was hurt.””

Dad's voice became quiet.

“He told me she died before I got there.””

I stared.

“But she didn't.””

“No.””

He looked broken.

“I never saw her body.””

I froze.

“You never saw her body?””

He shook his head.

“The hospital said there was confusion. Paperwork problems. I was grieving. I trusted the people around me.””

I whispered:

“And then Denise came.””

“Yes.””

A horrible thought entered my mind.

“Did Denise know?””

Dad looked at me.

“I think so.””

The pain in his voice told me enough.

I stood.

“So everyone knew except me.””

“Maya.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent eight years thinking my mother left me.””

Dad stood too.

“I am sorry.””

“I waited for her.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“Every birthday.””

Dad started crying too.

“I know.””

“No, you don't.””

I wiped my face.

“You weren't the one who thought nobody loved you.””

He stepped closer.

“You were never unloved.””

I looked at him.

“But I felt like it.””

That sentence broke him.

He hugged me.

And for the first time in years, I let myself be held.

Then the front door opened.

A woman stood there.

A woman with tired eyes.

A woman with the same smile I saw in old photographs.

My mother.

Emily.

She whispered:

“Maya?””

I couldn't move.

Dad turned.

Neither of us spoke.

Then my mother took one step forward.

“I know you don't know me anymore.””

My tears fell.

“But I know you.””

She touched her heart.

“Because I carried you.””

I wanted to run.

I wanted to hug her.

I wanted to scream.

Instead, I whispered:

“Why didn't you come back?””

Her face broke.

“Because someone made sure I couldn't.””

She looked toward the hallway.

Toward the basement.

“I left something behind.””

Dad frowned.

“What?””

My mother looked terrified.

“The real reason Richard wanted me gone.””

She reached into her bag.

And pulled out a small envelope.

“Maya.””

She handed it to me.

“This was supposed to be yours when you turned sixteen.””

My hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

But before I opened it, my mother said:

“Your father wasn't the only person Richard betrayed.””

I looked at her.

“Who else?””

May you like

She whispered:

“Someone inside his own family.””
