Chapter 5: The Voice From the Past
The room went silent after my mother’s last words.
“The person who did this…”
Her voice trembled through the phone.
“…is someone you trust.””
My father slowly turned toward everyone in the room.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Then Denise whispered:
“No.””
It was barely a sound.
But everyone heard it.
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Emily.””
My mother was crying.
“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””
“I’m listening.””
“I didn’t disappear because of the accident.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What do you mean?””
There was a long pause.
Then my mother said something I never expected to hear.
“I left the hospital because someone told me you and Maya were in danger.””
My father froze.
“What?””
“I was told there had been threats against our family. I was told if I came home, someone would hurt you both.””
I felt dizzy.
All these years, I believed my mother abandoned me.
I believed she died.
I believed I had been left alone.
But she had been afraid too.
“Who told you that?”” Dad asked.
My mother didn’t answer immediately.
When she did, her voice was quiet.
“Your brother.””
My father stepped back.
“What?””
The entire room changed.
My father had a brother.
Uncle Richard.
He was the man who helped my father start his construction company.
The man who brought gifts every Christmas.
The man who always hugged me and said I was his little princess.
The man who stood beside my father at every family event.
“No,” Dad whispered.
My mother cried.
“I didn’t want to believe it either.””
Denise looked down.
And that was when I noticed something.
She wasn’t surprised.
She was scared.
Dad saw it too.
“You knew.””
Denise looked up.
“Marcus—”
“You knew about Richard?””
Her lips parted.
“I…”
“You knew my brother was involved?””
“I knew something.””
My father’s face changed.
Not anger.
Betrayal.
The kind that hurt deeper.
“How long?””
Denise looked away.
“How long did you know?””
She whispered:
“Since before I married you.””
The words hit the room like glass breaking.
Jordan stood.
“What?””
Denise closed her eyes.
“I never wanted things to go this far.””
I stared at her.
“You knew my mom was alive?””
She looked at me.
For once, she looked guilty.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew I cried every night because I thought she left me?””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t know.””
I stepped closer.
“You knew exactly what you were doing.””
Dad reached for my shoulder.
I could feel him shaking.
“Denise, tell me everything.””
She sat down.
The woman who had controlled every room she entered suddenly looked small.
“I met Richard two months after Emily disappeared.””
Dad stared.
“Why?””
“He needed someone close to you.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
Denise looked at me.
“He wanted access.””
“To what?”” Dad asked.
She swallowed.
“Your company.””
The room became cold.
Dad’s company was everything.
He built it from nothing.
Every building.
Every contract.
Every employee.
Richard had always been his partner.
“He wanted to take my business?””
Denise nodded.
“He believed you were too emotional after Emily disappeared.””
My father laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“So he used my grief.””
“Yes.””
“And you helped him.””
Denise looked down.
“Yes.””
Jordan covered his mouth.
“Mom…”
She looked at him.
“I thought it would only be temporary.””
Dad stared.
“Temporary?””
“He said he just needed time.””
“For what?””
Denise didn’t answer.
My mother’s voice came through the phone.
“Marcus.””
My father picked it up again.
“Emily?””
“Richard wasn’t trying to take your company.””
A pause.
“He was trying to take your identity.””
Everyone froze.
“What does that mean?”” Dad asked.
My mother took a shaky breath.
“He had been moving money through your business accounts.””
Dad’s face changed.
“No.””
“I found proof.””
“Where?””
“I hid it.””
“Where?””
Another pause.
“Inside the house.””
I looked around.
The house suddenly felt different.
Every wall.
Every room.
Every memory.
My mother had left something behind.
Something important.
“Where?”” Dad repeated.
My mother whispered:
“The basement.””
I looked toward the open basement door.
The place where Denise hid everything.
Dad slowly turned.
But before he could move, the front door slammed open.
Everyone jumped.
A familiar voice echoed through the house.
“Marcus?””
My father froze.
I recognized that voice.
The same warm voice from childhood.
The same man who used to carry me on his shoulders.
Uncle Richard.
He walked into the living room wearing an expensive gray suit.
He looked around.
Then smiled.
“What’s going on?””
Nobody answered.
His eyes landed on me.
Then Denise.
Then my father.
His smile faded.
“What happened?””
Dad stepped forward.
“You tell me.””
Richard frowned.
“What?””
My father held up the photograph of my mother.
The color drained from Richard’s face.
And that was when I knew.

He wasn't confused.
He was caught.
