Chapter 9: The Night My Mother Died
“Dad.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
He sat motionless at the kitchen table.
“Look at me.””
He slowly raised his head.
“What did you do the night Mom died?””
His lips trembled.
“Aaliyah, please.””
“No more please. No more protecting me from the truth.””
I placed the medical report beside his coffee cup.
“Richard says he'll tell me what happened.””
My father stared at the paper.
Then he nodded.
“I was there.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Where?””
“At the hospital.””
“Why?””
“Your mother called me.””
I sat opposite him.
“What did she want?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“She wanted me to bring the original partnership agreement. She said she had discovered that Richard had altered the licensing documents.””
“Then why did you bring Richard's brother instead?””
My father looked up sharply.
“I didn't.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Samuel was already there when I arrived.””
“Dr. Samuel Vaughn?””
He nodded.
“He said your mother had been experiencing complications. He told me she needed to remain under observation.””
I stared at him.
“Was she conscious?””
“Yes.””
“What did she say?””
His eyes filled.
“She asked me to take you away from Richard.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then what happened?””
My father looked toward the window.
“Richard arrived about twenty minutes later. He argued with Evelyn. They were shouting about the designs.””
“What did they say?””
“Your mother told him she had the original agreements. She said she was going to expose him.””
“And Richard?””
“He told her nobody would believe her.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
“Then?””
My father swallowed.
“Samuel gave her another dose of medication.””
I stared at him.
“Was it prescribed?””
“I don't know.””
“Did Mom know?””
“She became upset. She said she didn't want it.””
I felt cold.
“Did anyone listen?””
My father looked down.
“No.””
I stood.
“You watched them give her medication she didn't want?””
“I didn't know what was in it.””
“But you knew she was afraid!””
He covered his face.
“I know.””
I paced across the kitchen.
“Why didn't you call another doctor?””
“I tried to get her transferred.””
“What happened?””
“Richard said he would have me arrested for violating the business agreement. He threatened to take you away.””
I stopped.
“What?””
My father nodded.
“He said he would expose the licensing transfer and accuse me of financial fraud. He said I would lose custody of you.””
I stared at him.
“So you chose silence.””
He didn't answer.
I felt something inside me break.
“You chose Richard over Mom.””
“I was trying to keep you.””
“You didn't keep me safe!””
My voice echoed through the kitchen.
“You let me grow up believing Mom's designs were worthless. You let Vivienne use the money. You let Celeste take everything I worked for.””
My father began crying.
“I know.””
“And now you're telling me you were there when she died?””
He nodded.
I stepped back.
“Did you see her die?””
His lips parted.
Then he whispered, “Yes.””
I couldn't breathe.
He continued.
“She asked for you.””
I covered my mouth.
“She wanted to see me?””
“Yes.””
“Did she know I was there?””
“She knew you were at home with the babysitter.””
I sat down slowly.
“What were her last words?””
My father looked directly at me.
“She said, 'Don't let them turn my daughter into someone who apologizes for being talented.''”
Tears ran down my face.
I had spent years apologizing.
For taking up space.
For asking questions.
For wanting to become a designer.
My mother had known.
She had known exactly what kind of people I would have to face.
And she had tried to protect me.
The following morning, Marcus arranged a meeting with the police.
I handed over the medical report, the original partnership agreement, and my father's statement.
He agreed to provide a formal account of the events surrounding my mother's death.
The investigators also contacted St. Catherine's and requested archived medical records.
Dr. Samuel Vaughn had retired several years earlier.
But they located him at a private medical practice in Connecticut.
I sat in Marcus's office when the call came through.
An investigator spoke to him for several minutes.
Then he turned toward me.
“Dr. Vaughn has agreed to an interview.””
“Will he tell the truth?””
The investigator looked at the documents.
“We'll find out.””
Celeste called me that afternoon.
I almost ignored it.
But then I saw the message she had sent.
*Please answer. It's about Mom.*
I picked up.
“What?””
Her breathing sounded uneven.
“Aaliyah, I need to talk to you.””
“About what?””
“Richard.””
I closed my eyes.
“What did he do now?””
“He's furious.””
“That sounds like his problem.””
“He says the original agreement has to disappear.””
I frowned.
“Why are you telling me?””
There was a pause.
“Because he wants me to help him.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“He wants me to say you stole the gown from the archive. He wants me to tell the judges that your evidence was fabricated.””
I stared at the wall.
“And are you going to?””
“No.””
I almost laughed.
“Why should I believe you?””
She began crying.
“Because I know what I did was wrong.””
I said nothing.
Celeste continued.
“I knew the dress was yours. I knew the flowers were yours. I knew Mom had taken your sketches.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“And you still wore it?””
“I wanted to win.””
“You wanted to steal my life.””
She sobbed.
“I know.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why are you calling now?””
“Because Richard told me something.””
“What?””
“He said he had been paying for my fashion education with money from your mother's designs.””
I went still.
“What do you mean?””
“He said the money from DVC paid for my workshops, my internships, my photographs. Everything.””
I stared at the desk.
“He used my mother's money to build your career.””
Celeste whispered, “Yes.””
“And you knew?””
“Not until yesterday.””
I didn't respond.
Then she said, “There's something else.””
I waited.
“Richard has a recording of your father.””
My stomach tightened.
“What recording?””
“He says it proves your father helped him change Mom's medication.””
I stood.
“Where is it?””
“I don't know. But Richard said he was going to release it if the police continued investigating.””
I closed my eyes.
“Why are you telling me this?””
“Because I don't want another person to get hurt.””
I almost said something cruel.
Instead, I asked, “Where is Richard now?””
“At his office.””
“Stay away from him.””
She hesitated.
“Aaliyah?””
“What?””
“I'm sorry.””
I ended the call.
That evening, I returned to the competition headquarters.
Margaret had arranged a special meeting with the judges.
The purpose was to review the original ownership evidence and determine whether Celeste's award should be permanently revoked.
But when I entered the auditorium, I saw something unexpected.
Celeste was already there.
She stood beside the runway wearing a simple black dress.
No diamonds.
No designer jewelry.
Her face was pale.
Vivienne sat in the front row.
Richard stood beside her.
He looked furious.
Margaret approached me.
“I'm sorry. They requested to attend.””
I nodded.
“It's fine.””
Richard smiled.
“Aaliyah. I was hoping we'd see each other.””
I ignored him.
Margaret took the microphone.
“This meeting concerns allegations of unauthorized intellectual property transfer, misrepresentation, and potential fraud involving the Garden Collection.””
Richard stood.
“These allegations are absurd.””
Margaret continued.
“We have reviewed original design records, financial documents, and dated construction footage.””
Richard interrupted.
“None of that establishes ownership.””
Marcus stood beside me.
“We also have the original partnership agreement, which establishes that the designs were never transferred to DVC Creative Holdings.””
Richard turned toward him.
“That's a disputed document.””
“Not anymore,” Marcus replied.
He placed a certified copy on the table.
“An independent document examiner has verified the signatures and identified alterations in the version submitted by your company.””
A murmur spread through the auditorium.
Vivienne stood.
“This is a family disagreement. It shouldn't be turned into a public spectacle.””
I looked at her.
“You made it public when you told everyone I was mentally unstable.””
She flushed.
Margaret raised a hand.
“Please.””
Daniel Foster connected his laptop to the large screen.
A video appeared.
It showed me constructing the pink gown.
Every stage.
Every detail.
Then a second video appeared.
Celeste and Vivienne entering my bedroom.
The room went silent.
Celeste looked down.
Richard stepped forward.
“This proves nothing about the historical collection.””
I opened the original ledger.
“Then let's talk about the historical collection.””
I placed the medical report on the table.
“And let's talk about my mother's death.””
A wave of whispers moved through the room.
Richard's face changed.
Margaret looked at me.
“Aaliyah, are you sure?””
I nodded.
“I'm sure.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“We have reason to believe that medical records relating to Evelyn Carter were falsified or improperly handled.””
Richard laughed.
“That's outrageous.””
Then Celeste stood.
“I can confirm something.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Vivienne grabbed her arm.
“Sit down.””
Celeste pulled away.
“No.””
She looked directly at me.
“Richard told me he had been using Evelyn Carter's designs to finance DVC Creative Holdings. He also told me that Daniel Carter had signed documents transferring the collection.””
Richard stepped toward her.
“Celeste, be quiet.””
She continued.
“He told me my mother had taken care of the rest.””
Vivienne stood abruptly.
“That's enough!””
Celeste began crying.
“I knew the dress wasn't mine. I knew Aaliyah made it. I knew everything.””
She looked at the judges.
“I accepted the award anyway.””
The auditorium was silent.
Then Margaret spoke.
“Miss Vaughn, are you willing to provide a formal statement?””
Celeste nodded.
“Yes.””
Richard suddenly slammed his hand against the table.
“You ungrateful child!””
Security moved toward him.
He turned toward the audience.
“You all think you know what happened? You have no idea what Evelyn did!””
I stepped forward.
“Then tell us.””
He stared at me.
For several seconds, he seemed to consider his words.
Then he pointed directly at my father.
“Ask Daniel why he signed the final medical authorization!””
My heart stopped.
“What medical authorization?””
Richard smiled.
“The one that allowed Samuel to administer the medication.””
I turned toward the entrance.
My father was standing there.
He had arrived without telling me.
His face was white.
Margaret looked at him.
“Mr. Carter?””
My father slowly walked toward the table.
Then he placed a document in front of the judges.
“I signed it,” he said.
I felt my knees weaken.
“But I didn't know what was in the medication.””
Richard laughed.
“Tell them the rest, Daniel.””
My father looked at him.
Then he turned toward me.
“I found out what Samuel had given your mother.””
I couldn't speak.
“What was it?”” I whispered.
My father began crying.
“Something she was never supposed to receive.””
Before he could finish, the auditorium doors opened.
Two police officers entered.
One approached Richard.
“Mr. Vaughn, we need you to accompany us.””
Richard stepped backward.
“You can't be serious.””
The officer held up a document.
“We have a warrant for your arrest in connection with suspected financial fraud and evidence tampering.””
Richard looked around the room.
Then his eyes settled on me.
“This isn't over.””
The officers escorted him out.
Vivienne sank into her chair.
Celeste covered her face.
But I wasn't watching any of them.
I was looking at my father.
He stood beside the judges' table, holding the medical authorization.
“Dad,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“I'm sorry.””
I swallowed.
“What did they give Mom?””
He looked toward the empty runway.
Then he answered.
“An experimental medication that wasn't approved for her condition.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who authorized it?””
He closed his eyes.
“Samuel.””
“And Richard?””
My father nodded.
“He arranged it.””
I took a step backward.
Then my father added one more sentence.
“But there's something the police haven't discovered yet.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked directly into my eyes.
“Your mother didn't die immediately after receiving that medication.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“She was alive for another six hours.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“And during those six hours, she told me where she had hidden the final document.””
“What document?””
My father reached into his jacket.
He removed a small folded sheet.
On it was my mother's handwriting.
*Aaliyah is not Daniel's biological daughter.*
I stared at the words.
The entire room seemed to disappear.
My father looked at me through tears.
“There's something else I should have told you.””
He unfolded the paper.
May you like
And beneath my mother's handwriting was another name.
*Richard Vaughn.*
