Chapter 9: The Truth He Was Afraid To Say
The voice disappeared before I could ask another question.
The call ended.
Just like that.
No explanation.
No name.
No chance to demand answers.
I stood in the middle of the room holding my phone while everyone watched me.
Marcus looked like he had seen a ghost.
Not a metaphorical ghost.
A real one.
The kind that walks back into your life carrying everything you tried to bury.
“Who was it?”” I asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
His jaw tightened.
“It was my father.””
The words landed heavily.
Claire covered her mouth.
I stared at him.
“Your father?””
He nodded.
“Ethan.””
I had never met him.
Not once.
Whenever I asked about Marcus’s parents, he always changed the subject.
I thought it was because of family problems.
I never imagined it was because his father was connected to the biggest secret in our marriage.
“Why would your father say that?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Because he knows.””
“Knows what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“I’m done waiting.””
His eyes met mine.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You keep saying you know, but you don’t understand what this feels like.””
I pointed around the room.
“This house has been full of secrets. Elena’s secrets. Your family’s secrets.
Legal secrets. And somehow I was the only person who wasn’t allowed to know anything.””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone says that.””
Claire looked down.
Because she knew.
Because she had said it too.
“But nobody protected me,” I continued.
My voice became quieter.
“You protected yourselves from my reaction.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
That hurt because I knew it was true.
He had not been protecting me.
He had been protecting the life he built after Elena.
A life where he didn’t have to explain the pain.
A life where he could pretend the past stayed buried.
I looked at the flash drive.
“Elena knew your father was involved.””
Marcus nodded.
“She suspected.””
“And you?””
He looked away.
I already knew.
“You suspected too.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
Not because it helped.
Because it was too late.
“When did you know?””
Marcus sat down.
“Before I met you.””
The room became silent.
“I found financial records after Elena died,” he said.
“Records showing what?””
“That money had been moved from the company.””
“By your father?””
“I thought so.””
“Thought?””
Marcus looked at me.
“I wasn’t sure.””
I crossed my arms.
“So what did you do?””
His silence answered before his words did.
“Marcus.””
“I confronted him.””
“And?””
“He denied everything.””
“Then why hide it?””
His eyes filled.
“Because Elena had just died.””
I waited.
“I was grieving. The company was falling apart. Her family hated me. Everyone thought I had failed her.””
He swallowed.
“And then my father told me something.””
“What?””
“He said if I exposed him, he would destroy everything Elena built.””
I frowned.
“How?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“He had access to information that could make it look like I was responsible for the company’s losses.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“So he threatened you.””
“Yes.””
“And you believed him?””
“I was scared.””
There it was.
The word he had avoided from the beginning.
Fear.
“I lost Elena,” he whispered.
“I thought I was going to lose everything she left behind too.””
For a moment, I saw the man I married.
Not the liar.
Not the man who hid things.
The broken man underneath.
But understanding someone’s pain did not erase what they did.
“You should have told me.””
“I know.””
“You should have trusted me.””
“I know.””
“You should have let me choose whether I stayed.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
The three words sounded like an apology.
But apologies could not undo years.
Then Claire spoke.
“There’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
She looked at Marcus.
“You never told her about the night Elena died.””
Marcus went pale.
“Claire.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“She needs to know.””
I looked at him.
“What happened that night?””
Nobody answered immediately.
Then Marcus whispered:
“I wasn’t with Elena when she died.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“I left.””
My stomach dropped.
“You left her?””
His face collapsed.
“She told me she wanted to be alone.””
“And you believed her?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because we had argued.””
“About your father?””
He nodded.
I stared at him.
“What was the argument?””
Marcus looked at the photograph of Elena.
“She told me she found proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“That my father had been stealing from the company.””
I held my breath.
“And?””
“I told her she was wrong.””
“Why?””
“Because I didn’t want to believe it.””
The room went quiet.
Marcus continued.
“She said I cared more about protecting my family than protecting her.””
His voice broke.
“She was right.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because suddenly the truth was more complicated.
Marcus wasn’t the villain I expected.
But he wasn’t innocent either.
He had chosen silence.
And silence had consequences.
“What happened after you left?””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“She called me.””
My heart tightened.
“You didn’t answer?””
“I did.””
“Then?””
“She told me to come back.””
“Did you?””
His eyes closed.
“No.””
The room went silent.
“Why?””
“Because I was angry.””
A tear rolled down his face.
“I thought we would talk the next morning.””
Nobody moved.
“And she died that night.””
The pain in his voice was unbearable.
But then I noticed something.
Something that didn’t fit.
“Marcus.””
He looked up.
“Why did you say you weren’t with her when she died?””
He froze.
“What?””
“You said you left.””
“Yes.””
“But you’re talking like you know what happened after.””
His face changed.
I stepped closer.
“You know something else.””
He didn’t answer.
“Marcus.””
Finally, he whispered:
“I went back.””
The room froze.
“What?””
“I went back.””
“When?””
“After midnight.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“I found her.””
I stared at him.
“Alive?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
The silence was unbearable.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Marcus looked at me.
And the fear in his eyes was different now.
Not fear of losing me.
Fear of what he had carried alone.
“Because when I found her…”
He stopped.
“Marcus.””
He swallowed.
“She had one last message.””
My hands went cold.
“What message?””
He looked at the flash drive.
“The message was for you.””
I froze.
“For me?””
He nodded.
“Elena knew you would exist before I ever met you.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said the words that changed everything.
“She knew someone would come after her.””
I stared at him.
“And she left a warning.””
“Yes.””
“What warning?””
Marcus looked at the screen.
“The person who destroyed Elena’s life…”
He paused.
“…was the same person who tried to destroy mine.””
The laptop suddenly turned black.
The video disappeared.
The files vanished.
Claire gasped.
“What happened?””
Marcus checked the computer.
“The drive was erased.””
I looked at my phone.
A new message had arrived.
One sentence.
May you like
From Ethan.
*You finally found the truth. Now come find out what Marcus did to hide it.*
