Chapter 7: The Woman Who Watched Me Fall
I stared at the name.
Elena’s sister.
Claire.
The woman who hugged me downstairs.
The woman who smiled at me.
The woman who acted like she had not been carrying a secret about my marriage.
My hands felt numb.
“Are you sure?””
James nodded.
“I wouldn’t have called you if I wasn’t.””
I looked back at the photograph.
Marcus and Claire.
Standing together years before I met him.
“She knew about me.””
“Yes.””
“How much?””
James folded his hands.
“That depends on who you believe.””
I hated that answer.
Because it meant there were still more versions of the truth.
“Tell me yours.””
James looked at the documents.
“Claire believed Marcus moved on too quickly after Elena died.””
“And she blamed him?””
“Yes.””
“But why investigate me?””
“Because she thought you were connected.””
“Connected to what?””
James was quiet.
Then he said:
“An attempt to take control of Elena’s company.””
I shook my head.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Marcus didn’t even know me.””
“Exactly.””
I looked at him.
“What are you saying?””
James leaned forward.
“I’m saying someone wanted Marcus to believe you were dangerous before he even married you.””
The room went silent.
I remembered the first months of my relationship with Marcus.
The way he seemed almost afraid to trust happiness.
The way he apologized for being distant.
I thought it was trauma.
I thought it was grief.
Maybe it was.
But maybe someone had been feeding that fear.
“What did Claire tell him?””
James hesitated.
“She warned him.””
“About me?””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“This is crazy.””
James didn’t stop me.
He simply said:
“Maya, look at the timeline.””
I looked down.
Three months before Marcus met me.
Claire’s investigation began.
Two months after Marcus met me.
The documents appeared.
Six months later.
Marcus proposed.
My stomach tightened.
“She was watching.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
James didn’t answer.
Instead, he opened another file.
“This is the part you need to see.””
Inside were emails.
Hundreds.
Between Claire and someone else.
I scanned the names.
Then I froze.
Because one name appeared again and again.
Tara.
My hands dropped.
“No.””
James looked at me.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“Tara didn’t know.””
“I don’t know what Tara knew.””
“But she’s Marcus’s sister.””
“I know.””
I looked through the emails.
Some were vague.
Some were about legal issues.
Some were about me.
One sentence caught my attention.
*She still believes she is innocent.*
I felt sick.
I looked at James.
“That’s about me.””
“Yes.””
“Who wrote it?””
James pointed.
Claire.
I closed my eyes.
The party.
The smiles.
The conversations.
All fake.
I drove home without remembering the journey.
When I arrived, Marcus was waiting.
He stood when he saw me.
“Maya.””
I walked inside.
He immediately knew something was wrong.
“What happened?””
I placed the folder on the table.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“From James.””
He looked nervous.
“You went to him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I stared at him.
“Because everyone in your life knows something except me.””
He looked away.
“Maya.””
“Did Claire investigate me?””
Silence.
That was enough.
“Marcus.””
He sat down.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
But I expected it.
“How long have you known?””
“Since before we married.””
I closed my eyes.
“Before we married.””
I repeated the words.
“They investigated me before you married me.””
“Yes.””
“And you still married me?””
He looked at me.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I knew they were wrong.””
I looked at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was ashamed.””
“Of what?””
“Of how I met you.””
I waited.
He took a breath.
“When I met you, I was desperate.””
The words felt like a knife.
“I needed someone to help me rebuild.””
I nodded slowly.
“Keep going.””
“I didn’t plan to fall in love.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
He looked at me.
“Then I became afraid that if I told you everything, you would leave.””
I laughed sadly.
“So you protected the marriage by destroying trust.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
A knock came at the door.
We both turned.
Nobody visited us at that hour.
Marcus walked to the door.
When he opened it, Claire was standing outside.
Her face was pale.
She looked at me.
Then at Marcus.
“I need to talk to you.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
Claire looked surprised.
“This is between me and Marcus.””
I smiled coldly.
“No.””
I held up the folder.
“This became my business the moment you started investigating me.””
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked afraid.
“Maya, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
Claire looked at Marcus.
“I was trying to protect you.””
Marcus stared at her.
“By lying?””
Her eyes filled.
“I thought she was using you.””
I stepped closer.
“Why?””
Claire swallowed.
“Because Elena left something behind.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Claire looked at Marcus.
“You never told her?””
Marcus went pale.
“Told me what?””
Claire whispered:
“That Elena knew someone was trying to destroy the company before she died.””
Nobody moved.
Then Claire looked directly at me.
“And she left evidence.””
I stared.
“Where?””
Claire’s face tightened.
“Hidden.””
“Where?””
She took a breath.
“In your house.””
I looked around.
My house.
The house where Marcus and I lived.
The house where Elena’s boxes were hidden.
The house where everyone knew secrets except me.
Claire stepped closer.
“And if Elena’s evidence is found…”
May you like
She looked at Marcus.
“…someone is going to prison.””
