Chapter 8: The Truth Noah Kept Hidden
Ava waited.
She hated waiting.
It was the one thing she had never learned to do.
Waiting meant uncertainty.
Waiting meant someone else controlled the moment.
But now she sat across from Noah Bennett, the one person who had once known every version of her, and she felt powerless.
“What happened to Rachel?””
The question remained between them.
Noah looked at the table.
He didn’t answer.
That was worse than any answer.
Ava’s voice became sharper.
“Noah.””
He finally looked up.
“You really want to know?””
She almost laughed.
“After everything I’ve seen? Yes.””
Noah nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
He took a breath.
“But you need to understand something first.””
“What?””
“You’re going to be angry.””
Ava crossed her arms.
“At who?””
Noah held her gaze.
“At me.””
The words surprised her.
She expected him to blame Victor.
Or herself.
Not him.
“What did you do?””
Noah looked down.
“I lied to you.””
The room felt silent.
Ava stared.
“You?””
“Yes.””
“About Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Noah leaned back.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
Ava’s expression hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
She shook her head.
“Victor protected my image. You protected my feelings. Everyone protected me from the truth.””
Noah didn’t argue.
Because he knew she was right.
“What did you hide?””
He reached into his bag.
The same envelope he had placed on the table earlier.
But this time, he didn’t give it to her.
Instead, he removed a small stack of papers.
Medical records.
Ava immediately recognized the hospital logo.
“What is that?””
“After the accident, Rachel’s company offered her a settlement.””
Ava frowned.
“That’s normal.””
“No.””
Noah shook his head.
“Not this one.””
He pushed the papers toward her.
Ava picked them up.
Her eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
“What?””
Noah watched her.
“Read the signature.””
Ava looked.
Her stomach dropped.
The signature wasn’t Rachel’s.
It wasn’t a company representative.
It was:
*Victor Hale.*
Ava looked up.
“Why would Victor sign this?””
Noah didn’t answer.
She looked back at the document.
Then she saw another detail.
The payment amount.
A large amount.
Much larger than she expected.
“What is this?””
“Silence money.””
Ava looked at him.
“What?””
“Victor paid Rachel.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Noah’s voice became quieter.
“Because he knew the truth would hurt your career.””
Ava stared.
“What truth?””
Noah looked toward the window.
“The accident wasn’t just an equipment failure.””
Ava felt cold.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Victor knew the equipment wasn’t safe.””
The words hit her.
“He knew?””
Noah nodded.
“He knew before the event.””
Ava’s mind raced.
“Then why didn’t he fix it?””
“Because fixing it would delay the schedule.””
Ava froze.
The schedule.
The thing that had started everything.
“The launch was important,” Noah continued.
“Investors were there. Sponsors were there. Cameras were there.””
Ava slowly lowered the papers.
“So he took a risk.””
“Yes.””
“And Rachel got hurt.””
“Yes.””
Ava looked at the floor.
All this time, she thought she had been the center of the story.
Her reputation.
Her anger.
Her mistake.
But there had been something much bigger happening behind the scenes.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Noah looked at her.
“Because when I found out, you were already falling apart.””
Ava frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“You had just fired Victor.””
The memory returned.
Three years earlier.
Victor standing in her apartment.
Angry.
Not because he had been caught.
Because he had lost control.
“You’ll regret this,” he had told her.
Ava had laughed.
“You don’t scare me anymore.””
Victor had smiled.
“You think you built this career?””
Those words had stayed with her.
“You think people follow you because of you?””
Ava had thrown him out.
But after that, everything became unstable.
Brands questioned her.
Opportunities disappeared.
People started criticizing her.
She thought it was because Victor was gone.
Now she wondered if it was because Victor was fighting back.
Noah continued.
“Rachel was scared.””
“Of Victor?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because she knew he had money. Connections. Power.””
Ava looked at him.
“And you?””
Noah looked away.
“I tried to help her.””
“But you didn’t tell me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
Noah’s voice broke slightly.
“Because I knew what you would do.””
Ava frowned.
“What?””
“You would blame yourself.””
She looked surprised.
“That’s not true.””
“It is.””
“Noah.””
“You would have gone public. You would have attacked Victor. You would have tried to fix everything immediately.””
Ava stayed silent.
Because he was right.
That was exactly what she would have done.
“I thought I could handle it quietly,” Noah said.
“But you couldn’t.””
“No.””
Ava looked at him.
“What happened?””
Noah hesitated.
“Rachel disappeared.””
“What?””
“She moved away.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
Ava stood.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You were helping her.””
“I was.””
“Then how could you not know?””
Noah looked hurt.
“Because she didn’t trust anyone anymore.””
Ava froze.
“She thought everyone wanted something from her.””
The sentence hurt.
Because Ava knew that feeling.
Being surrounded by people who didn’t really see you.
Only what you represented.
Her phone suddenly buzzed.
Both of them looked.
A new message.
This time from Rachel.
Ava’s heart stopped.
“Rachel?””
She opened it.
One line.
*“I think you deserve to hear the truth from me.””*
Then another message appeared.
An address.
Ava looked at Noah.
“She wants to meet.””
Noah immediately shook his head.
“No.””
Ava looked surprised.
“No?””
“It could be a trap.””
“Or it could be Rachel.””
Noah stood.
“I’m coming with you.””
Ava grabbed her jacket.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You said you didn’t trust me.””
“I don’t.””
The words hurt him.
But she continued.
“Not completely.””
Noah nodded.
“That’s fair.””
Ava walked toward the door.
Then stopped.
“Why did you really send me the video?””
Noah was quiet.
For a moment, she thought he wouldn’t answer.
Then he said:
“Because Rachel asked me to.””
Ava turned.
“What?””
Noah looked at her.
“She contacted me two weeks ago.””
The room went still.
“You knew she was alive?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Noah looked away.
“Because she wasn’t ready.””
Ava’s voice rose.
“And now she is?””
“No.””
“Then why now?””
Noah picked up his phone.
He showed her a message.
A message from Rachel.
The latest one.
It read:
*“He knows I’m talking. If I don’t tell her now, she’ll never know.””*
Ava felt a chill.
“Who is he?””
Noah didn’t need to answer.
Because another notification appeared.
This time from Victor.
A message sent directly to Ava.
She opened it.
Only six words.
*“You should ask Noah about me.””*
Ava looked up.
Noah’s face had gone pale.
Because beneath Victor’s message was another line.
A photo attachment.
A photo of Noah.
Taken years ago.
Standing beside Victor.
Both of them smiling.
And the date underneath was the part that made Ava’s blood run cold.
It was taken *before Noah ever met Ava.*
Ava looked at Noah.
“What is this?””
Noah said nothing.
May you like
Because for the first time since they reunited…
he looked afraid.
