Chapter 1: The Line She Could Not Wait In
“I don’t wait in lines. People wait for me.””
That was the sentence that turned every phone in the entrance of Eclipse Lounge toward Ava Sterling.
She said it with a smile, the kind of smile that had convinced millions of strangers online that she was fearless, powerful, and impossible to challenge. Her designer sunglasses covered half her face, but everyone could still see the confidence in the tilt of her chin.
Ava had spent five years building herself into a brand.
One million followers.
Luxury vacations.
Private events.
Photos with celebrities.
A comment section full of people telling her she was “goals.””
Somewhere along the way, she stopped seeing herself as a person and started seeing herself as a name.
And names, in her world, opened doors.
Especially nightclub doors.
The rain had just started falling over downtown, turning the pavement outside Eclipse Lounge into a mirror of neon lights. A crowd stretched down the sidewalk, wrapped around the building. People laughed, checked their phones, and waited patiently for their turn.
Ava looked at the line like it was a personal insult.
She stepped out of her black SUV, followed by her assistant, Mia, who immediately looked nervous.
“Ava,” Mia whispered, adjusting her coat.
“Maybe we should just wait. It’s only twenty minutes.””
Ava slowly turned her head.
“Twenty minutes?””
“Yes.””
Ava let out a small laugh.
“Do you know how many people would pay to get twenty minutes of my time?””
Mia forced a smile.
“That’s not really the same thing.””
“It is exactly the same thing.””
Ava walked toward the entrance without looking back.
The security guard standing by the velvet rope noticed her approaching. His name tag read Daniel. He was tall, calm, and had the patient expression of someone who had dealt with every kind of difficult guest imaginable.
“Evening,” Daniel said.
“The line starts back there.””
Ava stopped.
She looked at him.
Then she looked at the line.
Then back at him.
“You’re joking.””
Daniel kept his expression neutral.
“I’m afraid not. Everyone has to wait.””
A few people nearby recognized her.
“That’s Ava Sterling,” someone whispered.
“She’s the influencer.””
“Wow, she’s actually here?””
Ava heard them and smiled.
Of course they knew her.
They always did.
She reached into her purse and pulled out a gold VIP card.
“Problem solved.””
Daniel glanced at the card.
“VIP entrance is around the corner.””
Ava stared.
“Excuse me?””
“The VIP entrance is on the side street.””
She looked offended.
“I know where the VIP entrance is. I’m asking why you’re making me walk around like everyone else.””
Daniel sighed quietly.
“Because that’s the entrance assigned to VIP guests.””
The people waiting in line started watching more closely.
Ava lowered her sunglasses.
“Do you know who I am?””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
The simple answer surprised her.
“Then you know I’m not standing here.””
Daniel folded his hands.
“I know who you are. The rules still apply.””
A few people smiled.
Ava noticed.
That bothered her more than anything.
She hated feeling like the audience was laughing at her.
She stepped closer.
“Listen, I don’t want to make this difficult.””
Daniel remained calm.
“I don’t either.””
“Then call your manager.””
“I can.””
“Good.””
Daniel reached for his radio.
Ava crossed her arms, certain she had won.
But before Daniel could speak, a woman near the front of the line shifted uncomfortably.
She was visibly pregnant, one hand resting on her stomach while the other held a small umbrella. Her husband stood beside her, offering her his jacket.
Ava glanced at her.
Then at the line.
Then at the woman again.
“Actually,” Ava said, “I’m going in now.””
The pregnant woman looked confused.
“I’m sorry?””
Ava stepped forward.
“You heard me.””
The woman’s husband frowned.
“Everyone here has been waiting.””
Ava smiled coldly.
“And everyone here can keep waiting.””
A few people gasped.
Mia immediately touched Ava’s arm.
“Maybe don’t.””
Ava pulled away.
“What? I’m telling the truth.””
The pregnant woman looked down, embarrassed.
“I’m not trying to argue with you.””
“Good,” Ava replied.
“Because I’m not trying to argue either.””
The woman’s husband stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
Daniel immediately moved between them.
“Everyone, calm down.””
But Ava wasn’t finished.
She looked at Daniel.
“This is what happens when you hire people who don’t understand customer service.””
Daniel blinked.
“What does that mean?””
“It means maybe you should reconsider who represents this place.””
The crowd went quiet.
Mia’s eyes widened.
“Ava…”
But Ava kept going.
“I have millions of people watching my content. I can make one phone call and have this place trending for all the wrong reasons.””
Daniel looked at her carefully.
“Are you threatening my job?””
“I’m saying you should think about how replaceable you are.””
The words hung in the air.
Even Ava seemed surprised by how harsh they sounded.
But instead of apologizing, she lifted her chin.
The front door opened.
A man in a black suit stepped outside.
“Is there a problem?””
Daniel turned.
“Mr. Hayes.””
The crowd became quieter.
Ava recognized him immediately.
Marcus Hayes.
The owner of Eclipse Lounge.
The man who had turned a small underground club into one of the most exclusive venues in the city.
Finally.
Someone important.
Ava smiled.
“Actually, yes. Your employee is refusing to let me enter.””
Marcus looked at Daniel.
Then at Ava.
“What happened?””
Ava immediately changed her tone.
“I’m a guest tonight. I have a VIP invitation, but your staff seems confused about how to treat people.””
Marcus glanced at the line.
“Everyone here has been waiting.””
Ava shrugged.
“Not everyone has the same value.””
A strange expression crossed Marcus’s face.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Something colder.
The pregnant woman looked away.
Her husband quietly whispered, “Let’s just leave.””
Marcus heard him.
He turned toward the couple.
“Please don’t.””
The woman looked back.
Marcus smiled gently.
“Your reservation is still waiting inside.””
Ava frowned.
“Reservation?””
The woman nodded.
“Yes.””
Ava laughed softly.
“Let me guess. She’s some kind of important customer?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he walked toward the pregnant woman.
“Are you comfortable standing out here?””
She smiled.
“I’m okay.””
“You shouldn’t have to be.””
Then Marcus turned back to Ava.
The rain fell harder.
The cameras from people’s phones were still recording.
Ava finally noticed.
She had expected the crowd to support her.
Instead, they were silent.
Marcus reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.
“Ava Sterling.””
Her smile faded slightly.
“Yes?””
He opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed invitation.
Her invitation.
But something was different.
The gold lettering on the card had been marked with a red stamp.
CANCELLED.
Ava stared.
“What is that?””
Marcus held the card between two fingers.
“Your invitation.””
Her face tightened.
“No. It isn’t.””
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“It was.””
The crowd murmured.
Ava looked around, suddenly aware that everyone was watching.
“You can’t do this.””
Marcus tilted his head.
“Why not?””
“Because you know who I am.””
Marcus looked at the card.
Then at her.
“That’s exactly why I expected better.””
For the first time that night, Ava didn’t have a reply.
Then Marcus said something that made her blood run cold.
“Because you still haven’t realized who you just insulted.””
Ava looked toward the pregnant woman.
Confusion replaced anger.
The woman slowly removed her coat.
Underneath was a black dress with a small silver name badge.
Ava read it.
And the world seemed to stop.
*Elena Hayes.*
Marcus’s wife.
The woman who owned half of Eclipse Lounge.
The woman Ava had pushed aside because she assumed she was just another person waiting in line.
Ava’s mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
Marcus folded the cancelled invitation and handed it to Daniel.
“Make sure this card never works again.””
Daniel nodded.
Ava finally found her voice.
“Wait.””
Marcus turned.
“I can explain.””
He looked at her for a long moment.
Then his phone began ringing.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed.
The call was from someone saved under a name Ava couldn’t see.
But when Marcus answered, the first words she heard were enough to make her heart drop.
“Sir… we found the old footage from tonight’s entrance.””
Ava froze.
Because Marcus wasn’t looking at her anymore.
May you like
He was looking at his phone.
And whatever was on that recording was about to change everything.
