Chapter 1: The Boy With the Phone

The first thing I heard after Marcus Reed's fist connected with my jaw was Emily screaming my name.

The second was Kayla crying louder.

And the third was a small voice cutting through the chaos.

"STOP! HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!""

I tried to lift my head.

The marble floor felt cold against my cheek. Blood trickled from the corner of my mouth, and my ears rang so violently that the ballroom seemed to be underwater.

Marcus stood above me, breathing heavily.

"Someone call security!"" he shouted.

"Get this animal out of my event!""

Two security guards immediately pushed through the crowd.

Emily dropped beside me.

"Daniel! Oh my God. Look at me. Can you hear me?""

"I'm fine," I managed.

She touched my jaw and pulled her fingers away when she saw the blood.

"You're not fine!""

Across the room, Kayla was still on the floor, holding her torn dress together.

"Daddy, please don't let him near me again.""

Marcus wrapped an arm around her.

"Nobody is going to touch you again, sweetheart.""

Then he looked at the security guards.

"Take him outside. And call the police.""

I slowly pushed myself onto one elbow.

"Before anyone takes me anywhere, I want you to check the security cameras.""

Marcus laughed.

It was a cold, unpleasant sound.

"Do you think you're in a position to make demands?""

"I'm in a position to ask for evidence.""

"Evidence?"" Kayla interrupted, wiping her cheeks.

"You think I need evidence? Look at what you did to me!""

She pointed at her torn pants.

I looked directly at her.

"You tore those yourself.""

Her expression changed for half a second.

Then she buried her face against her father's chest.

"He's still threatening me!""

One of the guards grabbed my arm.

Emily immediately stood.

"Don't touch him! He hasn't done anything wrong!""

"Ma'am, please step aside," the guard said.

"He's bleeding! You can't just drag him out!""

Marcus adjusted his cufflinks.

"Your brother should have considered that before assaulting my daughter.""

I looked up at him.

"You punched me before asking a single question.""

"I protected my child.""

"You attacked an innocent man.""

His face tightened.

"Careful.""

I almost laughed.

My jaw hurt too much.

Then a little boy appeared between two guests.

He couldn't have been older than ten. He wore a dark blue suit that was slightly too big, and his black hair was neatly combed to one side.

He held a smartphone in both hands.

"Mr. Reed?""

Marcus turned.

"What?""

The boy swallowed.

"I saw what happened.""

For the first time that evening, Kayla stopped crying.

Marcus glanced at him.

"Not now, son.""

"But I saw—"

"I said not now.""

The boy took another step forward.

"She hit herself.""

Silence spread through the nearest group of guests.

Kayla slowly raised her head.

"What did you say?""

The boy looked nervous, but he didn't retreat.

"I saw you slap yourself. And I saw you rip your pants.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Who are you?""

"My name is Oliver.""

"Oliver what?""

"Oliver Bennett.""

A woman near the entrance gasped.

"Isn't that the boy from the children's clinic?""

Emily turned sharply.

"Oliver?""

The little boy nodded.

I recognized him now.

He had been one of the children at the clinic where Emily worked. His mother had passed away the previous winter, and his grandmother was raising him.

Emily had told me about him several times.

He was quiet, observant, and obsessed with recording little videos on his phone.

"What are you doing here?"" Emily asked.

"My grandma is helping with the charity auction," Oliver replied.

"She asked me to stay near the entrance.""

Then he raised his phone.

"I recorded it.""

Kayla's face went white.

Marcus looked at the device.

"Give me that phone.""

Oliver immediately pulled it against his chest.

"No.""

Marcus took a step toward him.

"Young man, you don't understand what's happening. Give it to me.""

"I understand perfectly.""

"Oliver," Emily said gently, "you don't have to do anything you're uncomfortable with.""

The boy looked at me.

"Mr. Daniel, I have the video.""

I tried to sit up.

"Thank you, buddy.""

Kayla suddenly stood.

Her earlier weakness disappeared.

"That video doesn't prove anything!""

Oliver turned toward her.

"It shows everything.""

"You're a child! You don't know what you saw!""

"I know you walked into him.""

"Shut up!""

The words came out so sharply that several guests flinched.

Marcus immediately placed himself between his daughter and Oliver.

"Enough. This is a private family matter.""

A tall woman in a black evening dress approached from behind the crowd.

She was holding a small leather handbag.

"Marcus, I don't think it is anymore.""

Everyone turned.

It was Margaret Bennett.

Oliver's grandmother.

She was in her late sixties, with silver hair and a calm expression that made her seem considerably more intimidating than the men shouting around her.

She walked directly toward her grandson.

"Oliver, sweetheart, are you all right?""

He nodded.

"Grandma, I recorded it.""

Margaret looked at the phone.

"Good.""

Marcus's face changed.

"Margaret, I suggest you keep your grandson out of this.""

She gave him a measured look.

"Why? Are you afraid of what he recorded?""

A few guests murmured.

Marcus stepped closer.

"Your grandson is making serious accusations against my daughter.""

"And your fists have already made a serious statement about your character.""

Someone behind us whispered, "Oh, this is getting ugly.""

Marcus ignored them.

"Security. Remove these people.""

Margaret didn't move.

"Before you do that, perhaps you should know that I spent thirty years working as a court-appointed child advocate. I know exactly how important it is to preserve evidence when a child witnesses an incident.""

She looked at the security guards.

"If anyone tries to take that phone, I will personally make sure the police know who interfered with a witness.""

The guards exchanged glances.

Marcus's jaw flexed.

Then he turned toward the event coordinator.

"Shut down the cameras.""

The coordinator hesitated.

"Mr. Reed?""

"Now.""

I heard those two words clearly.

And suddenly, something became obvious.

Marcus wasn't interested in finding out what happened.

He was interested in making sure nobody else could find out.

Margaret noticed it, too.

She looked toward the ceiling, where several security cameras were mounted.

"Interesting," she said.

Marcus turned toward her.

"What's interesting?""

"That you're ordering cameras shut down immediately after your daughter has accused someone of assault.""

His expression became dangerously still.

"Be careful what you imply.""

"I'm not implying anything. I'm observing.""

A few seconds later, the hotel manager hurried into the ballroom.

"Mr. Reed, we've contacted the police.""

"Good," Marcus said.

"Tell them a man attacked my daughter and assaulted me when I intervened.""

I stared at him.

"You know that's not what happened.""

He leaned toward me.

"By the time this is over, nobody in this room will remember your version.""

Then he straightened his jacket and addressed the crowd.

"I sincerely apologize for this disturbing incident. My daughter has been traumatized, and I ask everyone to respect her privacy.""

People began nodding.

Some looked sympathetic.

Others looked uncomfortable.

But almost nobody spoke.

That was when I understood something about wealth.

A rich man didn't always need to convince people he was right.

Sometimes he only needed to make them afraid of disagreeing.

Oliver approached Emily.

"Can I show you something?""

Emily crouched beside him.

"Of course.""

He unlocked his phone.

His thumb moved across the screen.

Then he paused.

"There's something else.""

"What is it?"" Emily asked.

Oliver looked at Kayla.

"Before she ran into Mr. Daniel, she was talking to someone.""

Kayla's head snapped around.

"That's enough!""

Oliver flinched.

Margaret placed a protective hand on his shoulder.

"Take your time, sweetheart.""

The boy swallowed.

"I recorded that part, too.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who was she talking to?""

Oliver looked down at his screen.

Then he turned the phone toward me.

The video showed Kayla standing near the ballroom entrance, speaking to a man in a gray suit.

I couldn't hear every word.

But the camera had captured one sentence clearly.

Kayla was smiling when she said it.

"Once Dad sees him on the floor, he'll make sure the police take care of the rest.""

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at Marcus.

For the first time that evening, he didn't look angry.

He looked frightened.

Because the boy hadn't just recorded an accusation.

He had recorded a plan.

May you like

And suddenly, I had a much bigger question.

Who had Kayla been talking to before she decided to destroy my life?
