Chapter 8: The Complaint That Almost Took My Daughter

I moved toward the door, but Daniel caught my arm.

"Wait.""

The pounding came again.

"Mr. Moretti, open the door!""

Livia ran toward Rosalie.

Her small hands clutched her aunt's dress, and Rosalie immediately bent to shield her.

I looked through the security monitor.

Two uniformed officers stood in the hallway. Behind them was a woman in a cream-colored coat, holding a thick folder against her chest.

Bianca.

My blood ran cold.

Daniel stepped in front of me.

"Let me handle the conversation.""

I unlocked the door but kept the security chain engaged.

One of the officers held up his identification.

"Mr. Moretti, we've received a complaint alleging that your daughter has been subjected to emotional abuse and that you may be preventing her from receiving appropriate care.""

I stared at him.

"Who filed the complaint?""

The officer glanced at Bianca.

She stepped forward.

"I did.""

For a moment, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

The same woman who had pressed electric clippers against my daughter's scalp was now standing outside my home, claiming to be concerned about her welfare.

Daniel spoke before I could.

"My client will cooperate with any legitimate inquiry. However, we need to understand the allegations and the basis for this visit.""

Bianca lifted her chin.

"I have evidence.""

"What evidence?"" I demanded.

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed photographs of Livia crying, pictures of her bedroom, and several screenshots of messages between Bianca and an unknown contact.

One photograph showed Livia sitting on the floor beside her mother's old bedroom door.

Another showed her holding the wooden box.

The images had been taken at different times.

Some were months old.

Others appeared to have been taken recently.

Bianca pointed at the photograph of the box.

"She's been taking confidential family documents and hiding them. Alessandro refuses to discipline her because he's emotionally dependent on her.""

I felt my hands tighten.

"She took a box to protect her mother's belongings from you.""

Bianca's eyes narrowed.

"You can't prove that.""

"I don't have to prove anything to you.""

The officer raised a hand.

"Sir, please. We need to keep this calm.""

Daniel stepped into the hallway and closed the apartment door behind him, leaving me inside with Livia and Rosalie.

I could hear his measured voice through the door as he asked the officers to explain the complaint.

Bianca's voice rose.

"She's not safe with him! He canceled our wedding because he can't separate his grief from his parenting!""

I looked at Livia.

She had gone silent.

Her eyes were fixed on the door.

"Baby," I whispered, "come here.""

She shook her head.

"Is she going to take me away?""

The question nearly destroyed me.

I knelt in front of her.

"No one is taking you anywhere without making sure you're safe.""

"But Bianca said the police would believe her.""

I stared at her.

"When did she say that?""

Livia's lips trembled.

"Last week. She said if I told you what she did, she'd tell everyone I was a bad girl and that you couldn't look after me.""

I pulled her into my arms.

"She was wrong.""

Behind us, Rosalie covered her mouth.

I looked at her.

"Did you know Bianca had been threatening Livia like this?""

Rosalie nodded miserably.

"She told me Livia was having nightmares. She said the child was struggling with the idea of you remarrying. I thought she was trying to help.""

I felt anger surge through me.

"How many times did you believe her instead of asking Livia what happened?""

Rosalie flinched.

"Too many.""

The admission silenced me.

A moment later, Daniel returned.

"The officers want to speak with you and Livia separately, with appropriate safeguards. They're also requesting medical documentation concerning the injury to her scalp.""

"Of course.""

"And Bianca has alleged that Livia has been exposed to financial documents that could cause her distress.""

I looked at the wooden box on the table.

"Those documents belonged to her mother.""

Daniel nodded.

"We'll explain that. The officers have also agreed to document the injury from yesterday. That may help establish the full context.""

I opened the door.

The officers entered, followed by Bianca.

She glanced at Livia and gave her a look that made my daughter immediately hide behind me.

One officer noticed.

"Miss Moretti," he said, "please remain on the other side of the room while we speak with the child.""

Bianca's smile tightened.

"Of course. I only want what's best for her.""

Livia began to cry.

I crouched beside her.

"Would you like Aunt Rosie to stay with you while the officer asks a few questions?""

She shook her head.

"I want you.""

I looked at the officer.

He nodded.

"We can accommodate that, provided you don't answer for her.""

I sat beside Livia on the sofa while he asked simple questions about her home, her school, and whether she felt safe.

Then he asked what had happened to her hair.

Livia looked at the floor.

"Bianca cut it.""

"Can you tell me how?""

She nodded.

"She told me to sit still. I said I didn't want her to touch my hair. Then she turned on the machine and pushed it against my head.""

The officer wrote something down.

"Did you get hurt?""

"My head felt hot. I cried.""

"Did anyone help you?""

"Daddy came.""

The officer glanced at me.

"And how did you feel when he came?""

Livia looked up.

"Safe.""

I swallowed hard.

Bianca shifted impatiently near the window.

When the officer finished speaking with Livia, he asked me for the doctor's report and photographs of the injury.

Daniel provided the documentation.

Then the officer turned to Bianca.

"Do you have any direct evidence that Mr. Moretti has harmed his daughter or prevented her from receiving appropriate care?""

Bianca lifted her folder.

"I have evidence of instability.""

"That isn't what I asked.""

Her cheeks flushed.

"He threw the clippers across the room. He canceled our wedding in front of two hundred people. He has become obsessed with his late wife and refuses to let his daughter move forward.""

The officer remained expressionless.

"Did you use the clippers on the child?""

Bianca hesitated.

"I was trying to trim her hair.""

"Did you use them after she asked you to stop?""

Her mouth tightened.

"She was moving.""

"That's not an answer.""

Bianca glanced at me.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that her own words were working against her.

"I may have continued longer than I should have," she admitted.

The officer wrote that down.

"Thank you. We'll document everyone's statements and review the available evidence. At this stage, we have no basis to remove the child from her father's care.""

Bianca's face hardened.

"This is ridiculous.""

The second officer spoke quietly.

"Miss Moretti, you need to stop making allegations you cannot support. If you have evidence of a crime, submit it through the proper channels.""

Bianca closed her folder with a sharp snap.

She looked at Livia.

"You'll regret this.""

The officer immediately stepped between them.

"That's enough.""

He directed Bianca toward the door and warned her not to contact or intimidate the child while the incident was being investigated.

When the officers left, the apartment became painfully quiet.

Livia crawled into my lap.

"Did I do something wrong?""

I held her close.

"No, baby.""

"Then why does Bianca hate me?""

I looked at Rosalie.

Her eyes were full of tears.

I took Livia's face between my hands.

"Sometimes adults make choices that hurt other people. Those choices belong to them. They are never your fault.""

She nodded against my chest.

I held her until she fell asleep.

Later that afternoon, Daniel and I visited Isabella's former office.

The building had been converted into a collection of small professional suites. The receptionist recognized Isabella's name and directed us to a storage room at the end of the second floor.

The safe was still there.

A facilities manager used the key Rosalie had given me, then entered the combination listed in an old envelope attached to Isabella's file.

The door opened with a metallic click.

Inside lay a sealed envelope, a USB drive, and a second copy of the blue ledger.

The envelope bore my name.

I opened it.

Alessandro,

If you've reached this office, then the documents in the storage unit were not enough to explain what happened.

I need you to know that I did not choose Bianca to manage Livia's trust. I never signed the guardianship agreement that bears her name.

I discovered the forged paperwork after I questioned a transfer request. When I confronted the people involved, they told me the matter had already been approved.

I knew that was impossible.

My hands began to shake.

Daniel took the letter and continued reading aloud.

There is one person who knows how the paperwork began. I believe she was pressured into cooperating, but I don't know whether she has told Alessandro the truth.

The letter ended without naming that person.

I stared at the page.

"Who was Isabella talking about?""

Daniel examined the envelope.

"There's no way to know from this letter alone.""

I picked up the USB drive.

It contained scanned documents, emails, and a spreadsheet listing payments made by Northstar Advisory.

Several entries referenced a consultant named Victor Hale.

Others referenced a company registered under Bianca's name.

But the final file was a recording.

I pressed play.

Isabella's voice emerged from the speakers.

"I know you changed the paperwork. I know the signature isn't mine.""

A man's voice answered.

"You don't understand what you're getting into.""

"I understand perfectly. You're trying to take control of my daughter's inheritance.""

"You should be thinking about your health, Isabella.""

"I am thinking about my health. That's why I want an independent review.""

A chair scraped.

Then the man spoke again.

"If you keep pushing this, you may lose more than money.""

The recording ended.

I stared at Daniel.

"That was a threat.""

"It may be evidence of one. We need to preserve the original file and have it examined.""

I replayed the last few seconds.

The man's voice was distorted, but one phrase stood out.

You may lose more than money.

I had heard those words before.

Not from Victor Hale.

Not from Bianca.

From a man who had visited my office years ago during the Northstar dispute.

I couldn't remember his face, but I remembered the voice.

I was about to tell Daniel when my phone rang.

Rosalie.

"Alessandro, where are you?""

"At Isabella's old office. What's wrong?""

Her breathing was ragged.

"Someone came to the apartment while I was taking Livia downstairs. They left an envelope outside the door.""

"What was inside?""

"A photograph.""

"Of what?""

Rosalie went silent.

Then she whispered, "It was a photograph of Isabella in the hospital. Someone had written a message across the back.""

"What message?""

May you like

Her voice broke.

You were warned to keep quiet.
