Chapter 7: The Sister Who Knew Too Much

For several seconds after Evelyn said Rosalie's name, I forgot how to breathe.

The storage facility's fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. Somewhere down the corridor, a metal door slammed shut, and Daniel turned toward the sound.

I barely noticed.

Rosalie De Luca.

My wife's sister.

The woman who had wrapped her arms around Livia while Bianca held electric clippers against her head. The woman who had stayed awake comforting my daughter. The woman who had cried when she read Isabella's letter.

I had trusted her with the most precious thing in my life.

And now her name was connected to a document that could give someone control over my daughter's future.

"Are you certain?"" I asked Evelyn.

"I've seen the scanned form myself," she replied.

"The signature is presented as yours, but I can't authenticate it. I can tell you the document was submitted under Rosalie's name.""

"Why would she do that?""

"I don't know, Alessandro. But someone accessed the archived records yesterday using credentials associated with your building.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had already taken out his phone.

"Send us the document through a secure channel," he told Evelyn.

"And don't contact anyone else about this until we've spoken to the appropriate authorities.""

"I understand.""

Before ending the call, Evelyn added one final warning.

"There's something I haven't told you. Isabella came to see me the day before she was admitted to the hospital for the last time. She was frightened, and she asked me to keep a copy of something she planned to send to you.""

"What was it?""

"A letter. I don't know whether she ever sent it.""

"Do you still have it?""

"Yes.""

"Please keep it safe. We'll arrange a meeting.""

When the call ended, Daniel put his phone away.

"We need to be careful about how we approach Rosalie.""

I stared at him.

"She is in my apartment with my daughter.""

"Then we don't accuse her without evidence. We make sure Livia is safe, and we ask questions when we're prepared to hear the answers.""

"What if Rosalie has been lying to me for two years?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

"Then we'll establish that. But a name on a document isn't proof of what someone did or why.""

I wanted to argue.

Instead, I called Rosalie.

She answered on the second ring.

"Alessandro? Is everything all right? Livia just finished lunch, and she's asking when you'll be home.""

I gripped the phone.

"Put her on.""

A moment later, Livia's voice came through.

"Daddy!""

"Hey, sweetheart. How are you?""

"I'm making a picture.""

"Of what?""

"You, me, and Mommy.""

I closed my eyes.

"That sounds beautiful.""

"Can you come home soon?""

"I'm on my way.""

"Okay. I love you.""

"I love you more.""

She giggled.

Then Rosalie returned to the phone.

"She's been asking about you all morning. She seems calmer now.""

"That's good.""

"Did you find what you were looking for?""

The question sounded ordinary.

But after Evelyn's call, every word felt loaded.

"Yes," I said.

"We found the ledger.""

There was a pause.

"That's wonderful.""

"Rosalie, I need to ask you something.""

"Of course.""

"Did you ever sign a document authorizing yourself to make decisions about Livia's medical care or finances?""

The silence on the other end lasted just long enough to change everything.

"What?""

"Did you?""

"No. Alessandro, where is this coming from?""

"Someone found a form bearing my signature that names you as an authorized representative.""

Her voice became strained.

"I've never seen such a document.""

"Are you sure?""

"Yes!""

I heard a chair scrape across the floor.

"Alessandro, are you accusing me of something?""

"I'm asking you a question.""

"And I'm answering it. I have never tried to take control of Livia's money or her medical decisions.""

I wanted to believe her.

I desperately wanted the woman who had protected my daughter to be exactly who she appeared to be.

But I couldn't ignore the evidence.

"Don't leave the apartment," I said.

"I'll be home soon, and we need to talk.""

She went quiet.

Then she said, "All right.""

The call ended.

Daniel and I drove back to the penthouse without speaking.

Rosalie was waiting in the living room when we arrived.

Livia sat at the dining table, coloring a picture of three people beneath a yellow sun.

The moment she saw me, she ran into my arms.

"Daddy!""

I lifted her and held her tightly.

"Hey, baby.""

She pressed her cheek against mine.

"You're home.""

"I promised I'd come back.""

She pulled away and studied my face.

"Why do you look sad?""

I forced a smile.

"I'm thinking about some grown-up things.""

"Like the wedding?""

"Something like that.""

She touched the cotton scarf around her head.

"Do you think Bianca is still mad at me?""

My heart twisted.

"Bianca's feelings are not your responsibility.""

"But she said—"

"Whatever she said, you don't deserve to be hurt. You understand?""

Livia nodded.

I kissed her forehead and carried her to Rosalie.

"Can you take her into the kitchen for a little while?""

Rosalie studied me.

"Alessandro—"

"Please.""

She led Livia away.

When their footsteps faded, Daniel placed his briefcase on the coffee table.

I turned toward Rosalie.

"Sit down.""

She stared at me.

"What's happened?""

I showed her the photograph of the second authorization form that Evelyn had sent.

Rosalie read it once.

Then again.

Her fingers began to tremble.

"That's not my signature.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"We haven't authenticated the document yet. We're asking whether you recognize it.""

"I don't.""

"Have you ever discussed guardianship arrangements with Bianca?""

Rosalie looked at me.

"Why would you ask me that?""

"Because Bianca was listed on the first suspicious document, and your name appears on the second.""

She stood abruptly.

"Alessandro, I swear to you, I have never signed anything like this.""

"Did you know Isabella had concerns about the trust?""

Rosalie's face changed.

Not much.

But enough.

I noticed the way she looked toward the hallway before answering.

"She mentioned some paperwork," she said.

"What paperwork?""

"I don't remember exactly.""

"Rosalie.""

She rubbed her forehead.

"She was worried about the trust. She thought someone had tried to change a beneficiary or access a financial account. She asked me whether I'd noticed anything unusual.""

"When was this?""

"About a week before she went into the hospital.""

"And you didn't tell me?""

"You were traveling. You were under enormous pressure at work. Isabella told me she wanted to understand the documents before she worried you.""

I stared at her.

"Why didn't you tell me after she died?""

Rosalie's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I didn't know what had happened. I didn't want to accuse someone without proof.""

"Did you know Bianca?""

"No.""

"Then why did Isabella's papers connect her to the trust?""

"I don't know!""

Her voice broke.

For the first time, she looked less like someone hiding a secret and more like someone being crushed by one.

Daniel placed the photograph on the table.

"Rosalie, did you have access to Alessandro's apartment yesterday?""

She nodded slowly.

"I came over to check on Livia.""

"Did you use a computer or access any confidential records?""

"No. I made lunch, helped Livia with her drawing, and watched a movie with her.""

"Did you contact anyone at Westbridge Medical Center?""

"No.""

Daniel made a note.

I studied Rosalie's face.

"Then help us understand why your name is on that document.""

She lowered herself onto the sofa.

"I can't explain something I didn't do.""

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Rosalie reached into her handbag and took out a small silver key.

"I should have given you this two years ago.""

I stared at it.

"What is it?""

"Isabella's desk key.""

"I already found the key to the locked drawer.""

"This one isn't for the desk.""

Rosalie held it out.

"She gave it to me the night before she died. She told me that if anything happened to her, I should give it to you only when you were ready to understand why she'd been so frightened.""

My throat tightened.

"Why didn't you give it to me then?""

"Because I was afraid.""

"Afraid of what?""

She shook her head.

"I don't know. I thought I was protecting you. I thought that if I waited until we understood what was happening, I could keep Livia safe without tearing your family apart.""

I took the key.

"What does it open?""

"The small safe in Isabella's old office. Not the one in your house. The one at her former workplace.""

I stared at her.

Isabella had worked as a financial compliance consultant before her illness. She'd left the job when her health deteriorated, but she had kept a private office in a shared professional building downtown.

I'd assumed everything there had been cleared out after her death.

"Why would she leave something there?""

"She told me it was the one place Bianca couldn't access.""

I looked at Daniel.

He was already reaching for his phone.

"We need to verify that the office and safe still exist.""

Rosalie wiped her eyes.

"Alessandro, there's something else.""

I turned back.

She took a shaky breath.

"The night Isabella died, I received a phone call from an unknown number. The person said Isabella had left instructions concerning Livia, and that I needed to follow them if I wanted to protect her.""

"Who called you?""

"I don't know.""

"What did they tell you to do?""

Rosalie looked down at her hands.

"They told me to keep Livia away from anyone who tried to make her sign anything when she was older. They said someone would eventually come looking for the trust documents.""

My pulse quickened.

"Did they mention Bianca?""

"No.""

"Did they mention me?""

Rosalie nodded.

"They said you might not believe the truth if you heard it from the wrong person.""

I stood slowly.

Daniel closed his briefcase.

"We're going to need to take this one step at a time.""

I looked at Rosalie.

"If you're telling the truth, we'll prove it.""

"I am.""

"And if you know anything else about Isabella's final days, now is the time to tell me.""

Rosalie opened her mouth.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes moved toward the hallway.

I turned.

Livia stood at the entrance, holding the drawing she'd been working on.

Three figures stood beneath the sun.

One was tall, wearing a blue suit.

One was small, with long brown hair.

The third had a smiling face and a silver necklace.

On the back, written in a child's uneven handwriting, were the words:

Mommy said Aunt Rosie knows where the other letter is.

I looked up.

Rosalie had gone completely white.

"Alessandro," she whispered, "I can explain.""

But before she could say another word, someone began pounding on the apartment door.

May you like

And a man's voice shouted from the corridor.

"Mr. Moretti! Police! We need to speak to you about a complaint involving your daughter.""
