Chapter 9: The Truth About My Father

The envelope sat on the table for almost ten minutes before anyone touched it.

Nobody wanted to be the first person to open it.

Because everyone knew.

Whatever was inside would change something.

Again.

Finally, Dad reached forward.

I watched his hand shake.

That scared me more than anything.

My father was always the strongest person I knew.

The person who fixed problems.

The person who made impossible things feel manageable.

But now he looked afraid of a piece of paper.

He opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

He stared at it.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“Dad?””

He didn’t answer.

Vanessa looked over his shoulder.

Then she gasped.

“Mom?””

I looked.

The picture showed my mother standing outside a building.

Beside her was a man.

Daniel Reed.

But that wasn’t what shocked everyone.

It was the date.

The picture was taken two months after the accident.

Two months after we were told my mother was gone.

My hands went cold.

“That’s impossible.””

Dad whispered:

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean no?””

He looked devastated.

“Because I knew.””

The words barely left his mouth.

My heart stopped.

“You knew?””

Dad closed his eyes.

“I thought she was dead.””

The room became silent.

“Then how?””

He looked at the picture.

“Because someone showed me this years ago.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Diane?””

Dad nodded.

My stomach twisted.

“She showed you proof my mother was alive?””

“Yes.””

“And you believed her?””

“I didn’t know what to believe.””

I stepped back.

All the pain I had carried for years suddenly felt heavier.

“You let me grow up thinking my mother abandoned me.””

“No.””

“You let me hate a woman who might have been trying to protect me.””

“Emily, listen—”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“No, you listen.””

Everyone became quiet.

“I spent my whole life thinking I wasn’t important enough for her to stay.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“And you knew there was a possibility that wasn’t true.””

Dad looked destroyed.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

I wiped my face.

“You were.””

For once, I didn’t soften my words.

I didn’t protect him from my pain.

Because nobody had protected me.

Vanessa sat down.

“I don’t understand.””

Dad looked at her.

“Neither do I.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Mom wouldn’t disappear.””

I looked at the picture.

“What happened to her?””

Nobody knew.

Until Mr. Collins called.

Dad answered.

“Hello?””

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“They found Daniel Reed.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

Dad swallowed.

“He’s alive.””

The room went silent.

“Where is he?””

Dad looked at the phone.

“He asked to meet you.””

Me.

Not Dad.

Not Vanessa.

Me.

The meeting took place in a small café outside town.

I expected someone dangerous.

Someone cold.

Instead, Daniel Reed looked tired.

Older than the man in the photograph.

But his eyes were familiar.

They looked like my mother’s.

When he saw me, he started crying.

“I can’t believe you’re here.””

I stayed standing.

“You know who I am?””

He nodded.

“You look exactly like your mother.””

The words hurt.

Because nobody had said that to me in years.

I sat down.

“Tell me the truth.””

He nodded.

“I owe you that.””

“Why did my mother disappear?””

Daniel looked down.

“Because she was trying to save you.””

My chest tightened.

“From what?””

He looked toward the window.

“From Arthur.””

I froze.

Again.

The same name.

My father.

“No.””

Daniel sighed.

“I know what you believe.””

“My father loved my mother.””

“He did.””

The answer shocked me.

“Then explain.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Your father wasn’t the person your mother feared.””

“Then who?””

“Your father made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“He trusted the wrong people.””

My confusion grew.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Diane wasn’t stealing from your father.””

My heart stopped.

“She was stealing from your mother.””

I said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“Your mother discovered that Diane had been moving money from a private account.””

“Why?””

“Because Diane was desperate.””

“For what?””

Daniel looked at me.

“To pay someone who was threatening her.””

The room felt colder.

“Who?””

Daniel’s expression changed.

And then he said the name I had already heard once before.

“Your father’s business partner.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Arthur’s old partner.””

A pause.

“The man everyone thought disappeared.””

My blood ran cold.

“Daniel.””

He looked directly at me.

“The truth is…”

He hesitated.

“Your mother’s accident wasn’t caused by Diane.””

“Then who caused it?””

Daniel’s face turned serious.

“Your father’s partner.””

I felt like the world tilted.

“But why?””

Daniel reached into his coat.

He pulled out a document.

“One last thing.””

I looked at it.

“What is that?””

“Your mother’s final statement.””

My hands trembled as I took it.

I unfolded the paper.

The first sentence made me stop breathing.

*I know Arthur is innocent, but he will never forgive himself for what happened next.*

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me.

And then he said:

“Emily, your father has been protecting you from the truth.””

“Which truth?””

Daniel’s voice became quiet.

“The night your mother died…”

May you like

He paused.

“Your father was there.””
