Chapter 3: The Secret Inside The Envelope

Nobody spoke.

The silence felt heavier than any argument we had ever had.

My father stood in the middle of the kitchen, staring at Vanessa like he was seeing her for the first time.

Diane looked away.

That was what frightened me most.

Not Vanessa.

Diane.

Because Vanessa had always been obvious.

Her cruelty was loud.

Diane’s was quiet.

Hidden behind calm voices and fake concern.

Dad walked toward the monitor.

“Play the video.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Dad, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I can’t.””

His face hardened.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

And for once, she couldn’t pretend.

“Because it involves Emily.””

My heart started racing.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Diane stepped forward.

“Arthur, this has gone too far.””

Dad turned.

“No. It went too far years ago.””

That sentence surprised all of us.

Especially me.

Because my father had never said that before.

Not when Vanessa mocked me.

Not when Diane dismissed me.

Not when I cried alone in my room.

But now he was angry.

Now he was paying attention.

“Where is the envelope?”” Dad asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“I don’t have it anymore.””

“Where is it?””

She hesitated.

Then she pointed upstairs.

“In my room.””

Dad walked past her.

“Show me.””

Nobody argued.

Not even Vanessa.

That scared me.

A few minutes later, we were standing outside Vanessa’s bedroom.

The room looked exactly like her personality.

Perfect.

Expensive.

Carefully arranged.

Dad opened the top drawer of her desk.

Nothing.

The second drawer.

Nothing.

Then Vanessa quietly said:

“Under the mattress.””

Dad looked at her.

“Why would you hide something under your mattress?””

She didn’t answer.

He reached underneath.

His hand found an envelope.

A plain brown envelope.

The same one from the video.

My breathing slowed.

Because suddenly, I knew.

Whatever was inside had been important enough for Vanessa and Diane to hide it.

Important enough for Vanessa to risk destroying my graduation.

Dad opened it.

Inside were several papers.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

His expression changed.

Not confusion.

Not anger.

Shock.

“Arthur?”” Diane said.

He didn’t answer.

He kept reading.

I stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Dad looked at me.

And the expression on his face broke something inside me.

Because he looked guilty.

Like he had just discovered he had failed me.

“Emily…”

I swallowed.

“What?””

He held the papers tighter.

“These are about your mother.””

The room stopped.

My mother.

The one person I had lost before I was old enough to understand what losing someone meant.

“What about Mom?””

Dad looked back at the papers.

“There are records here.””

“Of what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vanessa spoke quietly.

“Mom didn’t die the way you were told.””

My entire body went cold.

I stared at her.

“What did you say?””

Diane immediately snapped.

“Vanessa, stop.””

But it was too late.

The words were already out.

Dad looked at Diane.

“You knew?””

She didn’t respond.

That was an answer.

My hands started shaking.

All these years.

All those conversations.

All those nights I wondered why nobody wanted to talk about my mother.

There was something else.

Something they had hidden.

Dad looked through the papers again.

Then he pulled out one final document.

A name was written at the bottom.

A name I didn’t recognize.

He read it silently.

Then his face went pale.

“Who is this?”” I asked.

Dad looked at Vanessa.

Then Diane.

Then me.

And the next words that came out of his mouth changed everything.

“Emily… this document says your mother was trying to tell you something before she died.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“What?””

Dad slowly turned the paper around.

And my eyes landed on a sentence written near the bottom.

A sentence that had been hidden from me for years.

“If anything happens to me, Emily needs to know the truth about her father.””

My hands went numb.

Because my father was standing right in front of me.

May you like

And for the first time in my life…

I wondered if I had ever truly known him.
