Chapter 8: The Truth About My Father

I couldn’t breathe.

The signature stared back at me.

Michael Carter.

My father’s name.

The same handwriting I had seen on birthday cards.

School forms.

Permission slips.

Now it was on a document accusing him of betraying my mother.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Then louder.

“No.””

My father looked at the papers.

His face went pale.

“Emily, listen.””

I stepped back.

“Was it you?””

“No.””

“Then why is your name there?””

He didn’t answer quickly enough.

And that hurt.

Because hesitation felt like guilt.

The lawyer took the folder from my hands.

He studied the documents.

Then looked at my father.

“Explain.””

My father sat down.

“I can.””

“Then do it.””

He looked at me.

“When your mother got sick, her company started struggling.””

I frowned.

“That’s not what Mom told me.””

“She didn’t want you to worry.””

He continued.

“She had investors pulling out. Orders being canceled.””

Victoria nodded.

“She never told anyone how bad it was.””

My father looked at the papers.

“I borrowed money.””

My heart slowed.

“From who?””

He looked ashamed.

“From myself.””

I didn’t understand.

“What does that mean?””

“I moved money from our personal account into the company.””

The lawyer looked surprised.

“Without Elena’s knowledge?””

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she was sick. Because she was fighting for her life. Because I thought I could fix it before she ever knew.””

My anger weakened slightly.

“But these documents…”

“I created them.””

The room went silent.

My father looked at me.

“But not for stealing.””

“Then why?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was trying to save your mother’s company.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn’t you tell her?””

“Because I failed.””

That answer broke through me.

Not because it erased everything.

Because I saw the truth.

My father wasn’t hiding because he was evil.

He was hiding because he was ashamed.

The lawyer flipped through the pages.

“These documents were altered.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

He pointed.

“The signatures are real.””

My heart dropped.

“But the numbers were changed.””

Victoria looked confused.

“Changed by who?””

The lawyer turned the page.

“This section was added later.””

He pointed to a line.

“Someone made it look like Michael transferred money into his own accounts.””

My father stepped forward.

“I never did that.””

“I believe you.””

The lawyer looked serious.

“But someone wanted Elena to believe you did.””

I looked at Victoria.

She looked terrified.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then the door behind us opened.

We all turned.

Samantha stood there.

But she wasn’t alone.

A man stood beside her.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

The same man from the photo I hadn’t noticed before.

My father went completely still.

“You.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Michael.””

I looked between them.

“Who is he?””

My father whispered:

“Your mother’s business partner.””

The man walked inside.

“I was wondering when everyone would finally discover the truth.””

The lawyer’s expression changed.

“Richard.””

So that was his name.

Richard smiled.

“Still protecting this family, Daniel?””

The lawyer’s face hardened.

“You should have stayed away.””

Richard laughed.

“After all these years, you still think you’re the hero.””

I looked at my father.

“What is happening?””

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother was brilliant.””

He smiled.

“But she trusted the wrong people.””

My father stepped in front of me.

“Don’t talk about her.””

Richard ignored him.

“She discovered someone was stealing from her.””

He looked at me.

“And she thought it was Michael.””

My chest tightened.

“But she was wrong?””

Richard smiled.

“Eventually, she learned the truth.””

Victoria whispered:

“She found out.””

Richard looked at her.

“Yes.””

The room went cold.

My father stared.

“You were involved.””

Victoria started crying.

“I was scared.””

“You helped him?””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know how far he would go.””

Richard laughed.

“You always were weak, Victoria.””

I felt sick.

All these years.

All these secrets.

All this pain.

And the person behind everything had been standing in the shadows.

Richard walked toward me.

“Your mother recorded everything.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

He smiled.

“She knew someone would betray her.””

My father looked around.

“Where is the recording?””

Richard looked at me.

“You’re wearing it.””

I froze.

“What?””

He pointed toward the torn dress.

“The dress.””

My heart stopped.

The dress.

The hidden message.

The secret.

Richard smiled.

“Samantha almost found it.””

I looked at her.

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know.””

Richard continued:

“But your father did.””

I turned.

My father looked devastated.

“Dad?””

He whispered:

“I knew there was something hidden.””

The betrayal hit harder than anything.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know what.””

“But you knew?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother made me promise never to search for it.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because she told me if I found it before you were ready…”

He paused.

“She said I would make the same mistake again.””

I didn’t understand.

“What mistake?””

Before he could answer, the lights suddenly went out.

The studio fell into darkness.

Someone moved.

A struggle.

A crash.

Then silence.

When the lights came back on…

May you like

Richard was gone.

And the dress was missing again.
