Chapter 5: The Person Behind the Lies

We returned home before sunrise.

Nobody spoke during the drive.

My thoughts were louder than any conversation.

My mother had left me a secret.

A warning.

A message she wanted me to find after she was gone.

And somehow, Samantha had gotten close enough to destroy the dress before I ever knew it existed.

But one question kept bothering me.

Who sent the messages?

Who wanted me to find the truth?

When we walked into the house, the living room looked exactly the same.

The same couch.

The same family photos.

The same place where Samantha had laughed while holding my ruined dress.

Except now everything felt different.

Like I was looking at a house built on secrets.

Dad went upstairs immediately.

I followed.

The dress was still on my bedroom floor.

Damaged.

Broken.

But not completely destroyed.

Dad carefully picked it up.

“We need to find it.””

“Find what?””

“The hidden message.””

I stared at the torn fabric.

“How?””

He touched the pearls along the neckline.

“Your mother was clever.””

“She was a designer.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“She was a survivor.””

For the next hour, we searched every inch of the dress.

The seams.

The pearls.

The lining.

Nothing.

I started losing hope.

“Maybe Samantha really destroyed it.””

Dad shook his head.

“She wouldn’t have known where to cut if she didn’t know something.””

That sentence bothered me.

“What are you saying?””

He looked at me.

“I think someone told her.””

Before I could answer, we heard a noise downstairs.

A door closing.

Dad immediately stood.

“Stay here.””

“No.””

“Emily.””

“I’m done staying behind while everyone hides things from me.””

He looked at me.

Then nodded.

We walked downstairs together.

And there she was.

Samantha.

Standing in the living room.

Holding something.

A small envelope.

My blood ran cold.

“Where did you get that?””

She looked at me.

“I found it.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Her voice surprised us.

She wasn’t angry.

She looked terrified.

“This isn’t what you think.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that right before proving they’re lying.””

Samantha looked down.

“I know you hate me.””

I didn’t respond.

“But I need you to listen.””

Dad stared at her.

“Start talking.””

She took a deep breath.

“After I ruined the dress…”

Her voice cracked.

“I went back.””

My stomach turned.

“You what?””

“I was angry.””

She looked ashamed.

“I wanted to see what was inside.””

Dad’s expression darkened.

“And?””

“I found the envelope.””

She held it up.

“But before I could open it, Mom took it.””

Victoria.

My chest tightened.

“What did she do?””

Samantha looked at the floor.

“She told me never to talk about it.””

“Why?””

“Because it would destroy everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Destroy what?””

Samantha looked at me.

“Our family.””

I almost laughed.

“Our family was destroyed when you cut my dress.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

For the first time, Samantha sounded sincere.

And that confused me more than her cruelty.

“Why are you telling us now?””

She looked toward the window.

“Because someone came to the house last night.””

Dad frowned.

“What?””

“After everyone went to sleep.””

My skin prickled.

“Who?””

Samantha hesitated.

Then she whispered:

“Your mother’s old lawyer.””

Dad froze.

“Elena’s lawyer?””

She nodded.

“He asked for the letter.””

My dad went completely still.

“What lawyer?””

Samantha looked at him.

“The one who said he had proof that Elena changed her will before she died.””

The room went silent.

My heart pounded.

“My mother had a new will?””

Dad looked as shocked as I was.

“I didn’t know.””

Samantha looked at him.

“That’s the problem.””

Nobody moved.

Then the envelope in her hand slipped slightly.

I saw something written on the front.

Not my mother’s handwriting.

Someone else’s.

Three words.

*For Emily Only.*

My breath caught.

I reached for it.

But before my fingers touched the envelope…

The front door opened.

All of us turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Wearing a dark suit.

Holding a briefcase.

He looked directly at me.

Then at the envelope.

And smiled.

“Good.””

His voice was calm.

“You found it.””

My dad stepped in front of me.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at him.

Then answered:

“The person your wife hired to expose the truth.””

My mother’s lawyer.

But his next words made my entire world collapse.

“Unfortunately…”

He opened his briefcase.

“…your mother wasn’t trying to protect Emily from Victoria.””

May you like

He looked at my dad.

“She was trying to protect her from you.””
