Chapter 9: The Friend Who Buried the Truth
My father said nothing after hearing Mark’s name.
Not a word.
Not a question.
Just silence.
The kind of silence that happens when a memory you trusted suddenly becomes something you can no longer recognize.
I watched his face carefully.
For years, I had seen my father as someone who knew exactly what to do.
He fixed broken things.
He found solutions.
He carried the weight when everyone else fell apart.
But hearing Mark’s name had done something different.
It had taken him back.
“Dad?””
He blinked.
Slowly.
Like he had forgotten we were standing there.
“Mark wouldn’t…”
The sentence stopped.
Because even he couldn’t finish it.
Michael looked at him.
“You trusted him.””
My father looked angry.
“No.””
But his voice lacked confidence.
“You don’t know him.””
Michael nodded.
“You’re right.””
He placed the folder on the desk.
“I don’t know him like you do.””
Then he pointed toward the documents.
“But I know what he signed.””
My father grabbed the papers.
“What?””
“The accident report.””
My father looked down.
Michael continued.
“Mark was the first person who arrived at the scene.””
My father frowned.
“I know.””
“He told police Rachel lost control of the car.””
“Yes.””
“He told everyone she was distracted.””
My father’s face tightened.
“Yes.””
Michael looked directly at him.
“But he never told you he found something inside the car.””
The room went still.
My father slowly lowered the papers.
“What?””
I felt a chill.
“What did he find?””
Michael looked at me.
“Your mother’s notebook.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother kept a notebook?””
My father looked just as shocked.
“No.””
Michael nodded.
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
“That’s the problem.””
My father stepped closer.
“Where is it?””
Michael looked toward Vanessa.
“She had it.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“No.””
Michael’s voice was calm.
“You remember.””
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””
“Yes, you do.””
My father looked between them.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, don’t listen to him.””
My father’s voice was quiet.
“Where is Rachel’s notebook?””
Vanessa looked away.
That was all it took.
My father saw the answer.
“You had it.””
She swallowed.
“I found it.””
“When?””
“After the accident.””
My father stared at her.
“You were at the scene?””
“No.””
“Then how did you find it?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Michael spoke.
“Because Mark gave it to her.””
The words hit like a wave.
My father stepped back.
“Why?””
Michael looked at him.
“Because they were both trying to protect themselves.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
Michael took a breath.
“It means Rachel discovered what they had done.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Who?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
Then said:
“Vanessa and Mark.””
The room exploded.
Not with sound.
With emotion.
My father’s face changed completely.
“No.””
Vanessa immediately shook her head.
“Daniel, he’s lying.””
Michael looked at her.
“Am I?””
She didn’t respond.
My father turned toward her.
“Tell me.””
“I didn’t do anything.””
“Tell me the truth.””
“I am.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I defended you for years.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
“Daniel.””
“I chose you.””
The pain in his voice made me look away.
Because I realized this wasn’t just about betrayal.
It was about him realizing that every decision he made after losing my mother had been influenced by someone who wasn’t honest.
“I brought you into Lily’s life.””
Vanessa’s eyes moved toward me.
“I tried.””
“No.””
My father shook his head.
“You tried to replace her mother.””
That sentence changed something.
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“Maybe someone needed to.””
I felt my chest tighten.
My father stared at her.
“What did you say?””
She looked at me.
“You think your mother was perfect?””
Nobody spoke.
“You think she was some kind of angel?””
I felt tears burning.
“She loved me.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She loved you.””
The way she said it hurt.
“She loved you more than anyone else.””
My father stepped between us.
“Enough.””
But Vanessa continued.
“Do you know what it was like?””
Her voice rose.
“Watching Daniel look at you and see Rachel?””
I froze.
“I was trying to build a life with him.””
She pointed at me.
“But every day, there was a reminder that I would never be first.””
My father looked devastated.
“Lily was never your competition.””
Vanessa laughed.
“She was.””
“No.””
“She always came before me.””
“She was my child.””
“And I was your wife.””
There it was again.
The same argument.
The same obsession.
My father shook his head.
“I spent years trying to make you feel loved.””
“And it wasn’t enough.””
The honesty of that sentence made the room colder.
Because it wasn’t about a misunderstanding anymore.
Vanessa knew exactly what she wanted.
And she knew exactly what she hated.
My father picked up the documents.
“Where is the notebook?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I don’t have it.””
Michael stepped forward.
“She gave it to Mark.””
My father looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because the notebook had proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Michael hesitated.
Then answered:
“Proof that Rachel knew Vanessa was planning to leave.””
I frowned.
“Leave?””
Michael nodded.
“But not just leave Daniel.””
My father looked confused.
“Then what?””
Michael’s expression became serious.
“Rachel discovered Vanessa and Mark were planning something.””
The room became silent.
“What?””
My father looked at Vanessa.
“What were you planning?””
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time, she looked completely defeated.
“We weren’t trying to hurt anyone.””
My father stared.
“You just admitted there was a ‘we.’”
She closed her eyes.
A tear rolled down her cheek.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I need the truth.””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Mark helped me with the financial problems.””
“Why?””
“Because I was desperate.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She whispered:
“Because I thought if I couldn’t fix my life, I would lose everything.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You involved my best friend.””
“I didn’t force him.””
The words came out too quickly.
Everyone noticed.
Michael looked away.
My father saw.
“You’re protecting him.””
Vanessa stayed silent.
And that silence was the final answer.
My father took a step back.
Then his phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
Unknown number.
Again.
Everyone stared.
My father answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then his face changed.
“Where?””
He listened.
“What happened?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m coming.””
He ended the call.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
And I knew immediately something was wrong.
“It’s Mark.””
My heart dropped.
“What happened?””
My father grabbed his jacket.
“He wants to meet.””
Michael stood.
“Don’t go alone.””
My father looked at him.
“Why?””
Michael’s expression was grim.
“Because if Mark is finally talking…”
He paused.
“…it means he knows he has nothing left to lose.””
My father looked at me.
Then at the graduation cap still hanging from my bag.
The symbol of the day that started all of this.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t.””
He walked toward me.
“I should have protected you from this.””
“You’re protecting me now.””
His eyes filled.
Then he turned toward the door.
But before he left, Michael spoke.
“Daniel.””
My father stopped.
Michael looked serious.
“Ask Mark one question.””
“What?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“Ask him why Rachel called your name before she crashed.””
My father froze.
I froze.
Because that detail had never appeared anywhere.
Not in the stories.
Not in the reports.
Not in anything.
My father slowly turned back.
“How would you know that?””
Michael didn’t answer.
And that was when I realized something.
Michael wasn’t just someone with evidence.
May you like
He was someone who knew what happened in the final moments of my mother’s life.
And maybe he had been waiting twelve years for the right moment to reveal it.
