Chapter 7: The Woman Who Knew My Mother First

The photograph felt heavier than a piece of paper should have.

I stared at it, unable to understand what I was seeing.

My mother.

Emily.

Vanessa.

Three women standing together like they belonged in the same story.

But they weren’t supposed to.

Vanessa came into my life years after my mother died.

That was what I believed.

That was what everyone allowed me to believe.

My father took the phone from my hand.

“Where did this come from?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked completely exposed.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Not in control.

Afraid.

“Vanessa,” my father said.

Her eyes moved toward him.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

His voice was cold.

“I want answers.””

She looked at the photograph.

Then at me.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My chest tightened.

“Find out what?””

She stayed silent.

I stepped forward.

“What are you not telling me?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

“Start talking.””

She laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“You still think you’re the one who deserves the truth.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You lied to me.””

“I was protecting myself.””

“You hurt my daughter.””

Her eyes moved toward me.

And for a second, something like regret appeared.

Then it disappeared.

“I didn’t mean for it to go this far.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph again.

“Your mother and I knew each other before I met your father.””

The words landed like a shockwave.

I looked at my father.

He looked just as stunned.

“What?””

Vanessa took a slow breath.

“Rachel and I worked together.””

“Where?””

“At a marketing company.””

My father shook his head.

“You never told me.””

“You never asked.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“It isn’t.””

I felt dizzy.

“So you knew my mom?””

“Yes.””

“Were you friends?””

Vanessa hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“No.””

My stomach tightened.

“Then what were you?””

She looked at me.

“We were complicated.””

I almost laughed.

Complicated.

That was the word people used when the truth was too ugly to say.

My father stepped closer.

“What happened between you two?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Rachel didn’t trust me.””

“Why?””

“Because she found something.””

The room became silent.

My father’s voice lowered.

“What did she find?””

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said:

“She found out I was struggling financially.””

I frowned.

“That’s it?””

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“She found out I had made mistakes.””

“What kind of mistakes?””

Vanessa looked at my father.

“I borrowed money.””

My father stared.

“From who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

“From Michael.””

The name hit the room like a gunshot.

I watched my father’s face change.

“Michael?””

She nodded.

“He was someone I knew through work.””

“The same Michael you were texting?””

“Yes.””

My father looked disgusted.

“You kept contact with him for years?””

“I had no choice.””

“You always have a choice.””

Vanessa’s eyes flashed.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She looked at me.

“I owed him money.””

My mind raced.

“So what does my mother have to do with this?””

Vanessa became quiet.

“Rachel found out.””

I swallowed.

“And?””

“She wanted to tell Daniel.””

My father froze.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“That you were being lied to.””

The room felt colder.

My father stared.

“By who?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Me.””

Silence.

Even Vanessa looked like she hated herself for admitting it.

“What did you lie about?”” my father asked.

She didn’t respond.

“Vanessa.””

“I told Rachel I would pay Michael back.””

“And?””

“I didn’t.””

My father shook his head.

“You’re telling me my wife knew you had debt?””

“Yes.””

“And she was going to tell me?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Three days before she died.””

Vanessa nodded.

My heart started racing.

“What happened after that?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I begged her not to tell you.””

My father’s expression darkened.

“You threatened her?””

“No.””

“You scared her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I asked her for help.””

I frowned.

“You asked my mother for help?””

“She was the only person who understood.””

That didn’t make sense.

“You just said she didn’t trust you.””

“She didn’t.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“But she was still kind.””

The answer surprised me.

Because I had spent years imagining Vanessa as someone who had always been cruel.

But the truth was more complicated.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

“What happened that night?”” my father asked.

Vanessa looked at him.

“The night Rachel died?””

“Yes.””

She closed her eyes.

“I called her.””

My breath stopped.

My father went completely still.

“You called her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Michael was threatening me.””

The room fell silent.

My father’s voice became almost a whisper.

“Threatening you with what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“With exposing everything.””

I looked between them.

“Everything?””

“My debts. My mistakes. Everything.””

My father shook his head.

“But Rachel died after meeting Emily.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why were you there?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I wasn’t.””

My father stared.

“But the photo…”

“I was with Rachel earlier.””

I felt a chill.

Earlier.

Not that night.

Before.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Because I wanted her help.””

My father stepped away.

“And she agreed?””

“Yes.””

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“She told me she would talk to Daniel.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“She was going to tell me?””

“Yes.””

“About you?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s voice cracked.

“But I didn’t know what would happen next.””

I stared at her.

“Did you follow her?””

Her head snapped up.

“No.””

“Did you meet her that night?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was driving?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My father noticed.

“Vanessa.””

“I knew she was upset.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked away.

My father’s anger grew.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

Before she could answer, a sound came from outside the office.

A door closing.

All of us turned.

Someone else was there.

My father moved immediately.

“Stay behind me.””

We heard footsteps approaching.

Slow.

Careful.

Then a man appeared in the doorway.

He was older than I expected.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

And the moment Vanessa saw him, her face went white.

“Michael.””

The man looked at her.

Then at my father.

Then at me.

“So.””

His voice was calm.

“The family finally found out.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

Michael smiled slightly.

“I’m the reason your wife has been lying to you for years.””

My father’s hands clenched.

“What did you do?””

Michael looked at me.

And I hated the sadness in his eyes.

Because it meant he knew something about me.

Something I didn’t know.

“I didn’t do anything to your family.””

He paused.

“Your family did something to mine.””

My father frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael reached into his coat.

Not a weapon.

A folder.

He placed it on the desk.

“Your daughter deserves to know what really happened the night Rachel died.””

My heart pounded.

My father stared at the folder.

“What is that?””

Michael looked directly at me.

“Evidence.””

I couldn’t move.

“What evidence?””

He pushed the folder toward us.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Evidence that your mother’s accident wasn’t an accident.””

The room went silent.

May you like

And for the first time in my life, I wondered if losing my mother had never been the tragedy I thought it was.

Maybe the real tragedy was that someone had spent twelve years making sure I never learned the truth.
