Chapter 8: The Name My Father Was About To Say

The device went black.

No warning.

No final sentence.

Just darkness.

For a moment, nobody moved.

The silence was unbearable.

My father had been one word away from telling me who had destroyed our family.

One word away from giving me the answer I had been searching for.

Then Victor slammed his hand against the table.

“Where is the charger?””

Everyone looked at him.

Sarah narrowed her eyes.

“Why do you care?””

Victor froze.

“I don’t.””

“Yes, you do.””

Sarah stepped closer.

“You’re not worried about the device.””

She pointed at the black screen.

“You’re worried about what comes next.””

Victor’s jaw tightened.

Amanda looked between them.

“Victor…”

He ignored her.

“Daniel was always dramatic.””

The words made my chest hurt.

Nobody talked about my dad like that.

Not anymore.

“He left a recording to scare everyone,” Victor continued.

Sarah shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“He left a recording because he knew nobody would believe Ethan.””

I looked down.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

For months, I had tried to explain.

The cold dinners.

The unfair rules.

The way Amanda treated me when Dad wasn’t home.

And every time, I questioned myself.

Maybe I was wrong.

Maybe I was being difficult.

Maybe I was just missing my dad.

But Dad believed me.

He believed me before I even had the words to explain.

Amanda suddenly spoke.

“Sarah.””

Her voice was quieter.

“What did Daniel tell you?””

Sarah looked at her.

“The truth.””

“No.””

Amanda shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Amanda opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because explanations were easy when nobody had proof.

Now there were recordings.

Documents.

A lawyer standing in the middle of the house.

And a child who had finally stopped staying silent.

Lily looked at her mother.

“Mom…”

Amanda turned.

Her daughter’s face was full of confusion.

“Did you hurt Daddy?””

Amanda looked horrified.

“No.””

“Then why are you scared?””

That question hit harder than anything else.

Because Lily was right.

Amanda had spent the entire day trying to take control.

But now she wasn’t controlling anything.

She was reacting.

Sarah looked at me.

“Ethan, where did your father keep the charger for this device?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

I looked at the black box.

“Maybe he didn’t want me to have it.””

Sarah frowned.

“That doesn’t sound like Daniel.””

“What do you mean?””

“He would have made sure you could access everything.””

I thought about it.

Dad planned everything.

The recordings.

The lawyer.

The password.

The warnings.

There had to be something else.

Something I missed.

I closed my eyes.

And then I remembered.

The night before he left.

After Dad gave me the device, he had hugged me.

Then he whispered:

“Don’t just protect what’s inside.””

I opened my eyes.

“What?””

Everyone looked at me.

“What did you remember?”” Sarah asked.

I stood up.

“He said something else.””

“What?””

I walked toward the stairs.

“He said don’t just protect what’s inside.””

Sarah followed.

“What does that mean?””

“I don’t know.””

I ran upstairs.

To my bedroom.

The others followed.

Even Victor.

But Sarah stopped him.

“You stay.””

Victor stared.

“You think I’m going to let you search my house?””

Sarah looked around.

“Your house?””

Again.

That phrase.

Victor said nothing.

I went straight to my bed.

I searched through the things Dad had left me.

My stuffed bear.

My books.

The small wooden box where I kept my favorite toys.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

Dad had always hidden important things in ordinary places.

Once, he hid my birthday present inside a cereal box.

Because he said:

“Nobody searches where they think something is boring.””

I looked at my bookshelf.

The old dictionary.

The broken lamp.

The stack of school papers.

Then I saw it.

A book that didn’t belong.

A blue notebook.

I pulled it out.

My heart started racing.

Because I recognized it.

Dad’s handwriting was on the cover.

*Ethan’s Adventure Notes*

I opened it.

The first pages were normal.

Drawings.

Little messages.

Things Dad wrote for me.

But halfway through, the writing changed.

The letters became smaller.

More serious.

I flipped through.

Then I found a page.

A sentence written in bold.

*If you find this, the device has been discovered.*

My breath caught.

Sarah moved closer.

“Ethan.””

I turned the page.

There was a small envelope taped inside.

My name was written on it.

Not Daniel.

Not Sarah.

Mine.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

And a note.

I read it aloud.

“Ethan, if you are reading this, you have already learned that some people are not who they pretend to be.””

Nobody spoke.

The note continued.

“You may be angry. You may feel betrayed. But remember this: the truth is not meant to hurt you. The truth is meant to free you.””

My eyes blurred.

Dad.

Even in the middle of a nightmare, he was still trying to protect me.

At the bottom of the note were four words.

*Play the last recording.*

Sarah looked at the memory card.

“Your father knew.””

I looked at her.

“Knew what?””

“That someone might stop the first recording.””

My stomach dropped.

The device had died.

But Dad had planned for that.

I turned around.

Victor was no longer standing by the door.

My heart stopped.

“Where is Victor?””

Everyone looked.

The hallway was empty.

Amanda’s face changed.

“He left.””

Sarah immediately moved.

“No.””

She ran downstairs.

We followed.

The front door was open.

Cold air rushed inside.

Victor was gone.

But he hadn’t left quietly.

On the floor near the doorway was the black device charger.

Broken.

Someone had stepped on it.

Sarah picked it up.

“He knew.””

Amanda stared.

“What?””

“He knew there was another recording.””

A strange expression crossed Amanda’s face.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Victor wouldn’t…”

Sarah turned to her.

“You still believe he was protecting you?””

Amanda didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw uncertainty on her face.

Sarah looked at the memory card in my hand.

“We need to hear this somewhere safe.””

“Here?””

“No.””

She looked toward the open door.

“Not anymore.””

Then the house phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Nobody used that phone.

Dad had disconnected it years ago.

But it rang again.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Sarah slowly picked it up.

“Hello?””

She listened.

Her face changed.

“What?””

Amanda stepped closer.

“What is it?””

Sarah looked at me.

And I knew immediately.

Something was wrong.

“Who is it?””

Sarah lowered the phone.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“It’s Daniel.””

The world stopped.

I couldn’t breathe.

My dad.

Calling.

After all this time.

Sarah held the phone tighter.

“Ethan…”

I stepped forward.

“Let me talk to him.””

She hesitated.

Then slowly handed me the receiver.

I lifted it.

“Dad?””

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a voice.

Weak.

Faint.

But familiar.

“Ethan…”

My knees almost gave out.

“Dad?””

A shaky breath came through the phone.

“Listen to me.””

I started crying.

“Where are you?””

“Ethan, I don’t have much time.””

“Are you okay?””

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

I held the phone tighter.

“Why didn’t you come home?””

Silence.

Then Dad said something that made everyone in the room freeze.

“Because the person who tried to destroy our family…”

A crackle.

A breath.

“…is listening to this call right now.””

I looked around.

Amanda.

Sarah.

The empty doorway.

Nobody moved.

May you like

Then Dad said the words I never expected.

“Ethan, don’t trust the person standing closest to you.””
