Chapter 4: My Father’s Final Warning

“Ethan…”

My father’s voice came through the tiny speaker.

The sound was not clear.

There was a little static.

A faint buzzing noise.

But it was him.

I knew his voice better than anyone.

It was the voice that sang badly in the car when he thought nobody was listening.

The voice that whispered bedtime stories when I couldn’t sleep.

The voice that always promised, “I’ll come back.””

But this time, he didn’t sound happy.

He sounded tired.

Careful.

Like every word mattered.

“If you’re hearing this, it means I was right to be worried.””

My fingers trembled around the device.

Lily grabbed my arm.

Amanda stood frozen near the door.

Victor looked like he had forgotten how to breathe.

My father continued.

“Ethan, I need you to listen carefully. I know you’re young, and I know this isn’t fair. You should never have to carry something like this.””

My eyes burned.

Because he was right.

I was seven years old.

I should have been worrying about school.

About cartoons.

About whether I could convince Dad to buy me ice cream after dinner.

Not about secret recordings.

Not about adults making plans behind my back.

“But I also know you’re stronger than people think.””

I looked down.

That was something Dad always said.

Not because he thought I was fearless.

Because he knew I was scared and still tried.

The recording continued.

“I need you to understand something about Amanda.””

Amanda suddenly stepped forward.

“Ethan, turn that off.””

I looked at her.

For once, I didn’t see the woman who made me feel small.

I saw someone who was afraid.

“Why?”” I asked.

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Victor moved closer.

“That recording is not what you think.””

My father’s voice continued.

“Amanda came into our lives at a time when we were both hurting.””

I stared at the device.

Dad never spoke badly about anyone.

Not even people who hurt him.

That was why his next words frightened me.

“At first, I believed she cared about Ethan.””

Amanda looked down.

Then Dad said:

“I was wrong.””

The room went silent.

Lily looked at her mother.

“No…”

Her voice was tiny.

Amanda shook her head.

“Ethan, your father was upset. He didn’t understand everything.””

But nobody listened.

Because Dad was still speaking.

“I noticed small things first.””

A pause.

“Things that didn’t make sense.””

My heart tightened.

I remembered those things.

The missing snacks.

The strange phone calls.

The way Amanda changed whenever Dad came home.

“She treated Ethan differently when I wasn’t there.””

Amanda’s face turned pale.

“She made him believe he was the problem.””

My throat tightened.

Because those words described everything I couldn’t explain.

Dad knew.

He had known.

I looked at Amanda.

She looked away.

“She told me Ethan was difficult. That he was jealous. That he didn’t want a new family.””

Lily whispered:

“She said that?””

Amanda looked at her.

“Lily—”

“No.””

My little sister shook her head.

“You said Ethan didn’t like us.””

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

“But I started noticing something.””

A short silence.

“Every time I asked Ethan what happened, he looked scared before he answered.””

My eyes filled with tears.

Because Dad had noticed.

I thought nobody noticed.

I thought I was just being weak.

Just being too sensitive.

But my dad saw.

“I realized my son wasn’t acting out.””

His voice became softer.

“He was trying to survive.””

Amanda covered her mouth.

Victor suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

He reached toward the device.

I moved back.

“No.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Ethan, give it to me.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand what’s happening.””

“I understand enough.””

The words surprised me.

Even me.

Victor stared.

“You’re a child.””

I looked at him.

“My dad trusted me.””

For a second, nobody had an answer.

Then the recording continued.

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

My father’s voice changed.

More serious.

“I discovered that Amanda and Victor were hiding something from me.””

Victor’s face changed.

Amanda looked at him.

And for the first time, I saw something between them.

Not friendship.

Not trust.

Fear.

Dad continued.

“I found documents that didn’t belong in my house.””

My hands went cold.

“Documents connected to my company.””

Victor’s jaw tightened.

My dad owned a small technology company.

It wasn’t huge.

But it was his dream.

He built it from nothing.

He used to tell me stories about working late nights at his kitchen table.

“She wanted access to information she shouldn’t have had.””

Amanda shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

But her voice was weak.

Dad continued.

“I don’t know how far this goes yet.””

A pause.

“But I know one thing.””

The room seemed to shrink.

“If something happens to me, Ethan cannot be left alone with Amanda or Victor.””

Lily gasped.

“No…”

Amanda looked at the floor.

I watched her carefully.

Because I wanted to see anger.

I wanted to see her say Dad was lying.

But she didn’t.

She just stood there.

Silent.

That scared me more.

Then Dad said the sentence that changed everything.

“Ethan, if you are listening to this, take the device and go to the person whose name I saved in the final file.””

A click sounded.

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

“What final file?”” Victor asked.

It was the first time he sounded nervous.

I looked down.

There was another file.

The last one.

No title.

Just a locked symbol.

Victor saw it too.

His face changed immediately.

“No.””

I looked up.

“You know this file?””

He didn’t answer.

Amanda grabbed his arm.

“Victor.””

He pulled away.

“Why is there a final file?””

I stepped backward.

The room felt dangerous.

The same man who had walked in smiling was gone.

Now I saw the real Victor.

The person Dad had warned me about.

“What’s inside it?”” I asked.

Victor stared at me.

Then he did something I never expected.

He begged.

“Ethan.””

I blinked.

“Please.””

The word sounded strange coming from him.

A grown man.

Begging a seven-year-old.

“Don’t open that.””

Lily moved closer to me.

“Why?””

Victor looked at her.

Then at Amanda.

Then back at me.

“Because if you open it…”

He stopped.

My heartbeat grew louder.

“What?””

His voice dropped.

“You’ll know why your father left.””

The sentence hit me harder than anything else.

Because Dad hadn’t just gone away for work.

Had he?

For three weeks, everyone had told me the same thing.

“Your father will be back soon.””

But what if that wasn’t true?

What if there was a reason he hadn’t called?

What if something had happened?

I looked at Amanda.

“Where is my dad?””

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

I saw guilt.

Lily saw it too.

“Mom?””

Amanda closed her eyes.

“I…”

She couldn’t finish.

Then suddenly, the device in my hand made another sound.

A message appeared.

Not a recording.

A location.

A name.

And a time.

My father had programmed it before he disappeared.

The screen showed:

*IF I AM NOT HOME BY FRIDAY — GO TO SARAH WILLIAMS.*

I knew that name.

Everyone knew that name.

Sarah was my father’s lawyer.

But underneath it was one more message.

A message Dad had left only for me.

I clicked it.

His voice played again.

“Ethan, if you have reached this part, I need you to do one thing.””

I held my breath.

“Do not believe anything they tell you.””

A pause.

Then Dad whispered:

“Because the person who caused this is standing in the same room as you.””

The recording ended.

Slowly, I looked up.

Three adults stared back at me.

Amanda.

Victor.

And the truth I wasn’t ready to face.

Then Amanda’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And all the color disappeared from her face.

Because the caller wasn’t my dad.

It was Sarah Williams.

May you like

And before Amanda answered, I saw the message underneath the incoming call.

*I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.*
