Chapter 7: The Hospital File
The stranger stood in my living room like he belonged there.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not the folder in his hand.
Not the cold expression on his face.
Not the fact that he had walked into my home without permission.
It was the confidence.
He wasn’t sneaking in.
He wasn’t afraid.
He looked like someone who had been invited.
“Who are you?”” I demanded.
The man looked at me, then at Amy.
Then his eyes moved to Teresa.
“Richard Parker sends his regards.””
Amy went completely still.
“No.””
The man tilted his head.
“Yes.””
I tightened my grip around Frederick.
“Get out of my house.””
He smiled slightly.
“I would if this were only about your house.””
The words made my skin crawl.
I stepped forward.
“Leave.””
He lifted the folder.
“I think you’ll want to see this first.””
“No.””
Amy grabbed my arm.
“Connor.””
I looked at her.
Her face was filled with fear.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Fear.
She knew this man.
“Who is he?””
She whispered,
“Daniel Cross.””
The stranger smiled.
“Good to know she remembers.””
My stomach tightened.
“Remember from where?””
Amy didn’t answer.
Daniel walked farther into the room.
The relatives immediately moved away from him.
Even my mother looked uncomfortable.
“You should all leave,” I said.
Nobody argued.
The birthday party that had started with laughter ended with people silently grabbing coats and avoiding eye contact.
Within minutes, the house became quiet.
Only five people remained.
Me.
Amy.
Frederick.
My mother.
Evan.
And Daniel Cross.
I stared at the stranger.
“You have thirty seconds.””
Daniel placed the folder on the table.
“Your wife’s father wants to avoid unnecessary damage.””
“Damage?””
“Yes.””
He opened the folder.
“He believes you are a reasonable man.””
I laughed.
“Your employer tried to steal my house.””
Daniel didn't react.
“He believes you are emotional because you do not understand the entire situation.””
I looked at Amy.
Then back at him.
“Explain.””
Daniel removed a document.
“This is a medical disclosure agreement.””
Amy immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You know what it is.””
“Put it away.””
I felt a chill.
“What is it?””
Nobody answered.
I looked at Amy.
“What is it?””
She shook her head.
“Connor…”
“Tell me.””
Daniel interrupted.
“Mr. Bradley, this concerns your son.””
My arms tightened around Frederick.
“What about my son?””
Daniel looked down at the paper.
“The hospital records from the night of his birth contain information that was never disclosed to you.””
I felt the room disappear.
“Never disclosed?””
Amy closed her eyes.
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“Not again.””
I looked at her.
“No more secrets.””
She started crying.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
I pointed toward the folder.
“And somehow every secret ends with me being hurt.””
Daniel slid the document across the table.
“Read it.””
I didn’t move.
Amy whispered,
“Connor…”
I picked it up.
The first page was filled with medical terms.
Names.
Dates.
Numbers.
Then I saw it.
A section highlighted in yellow.
*PATERNITY AND BIRTH RECORD REVIEW*
My heart stopped.
I looked at Amy.
“What is this?””
She covered her face.
Daniel answered.
“Your son’s birth records were altered.””
Silence.
“What?””
“Certain information was removed.””
“By who?””
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked at Amy.
“By who?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s not true.””
Her tears fell.
“I know who wanted it hidden.””
“Who?””
She looked toward the folder.
“My father.””
I felt anger rise.
“Why?””
Daniel folded his hands.
“Because Richard Parker had a legal dispute involving a child custody matter years ago.””
I stared at him.
“What does that have to do with Frederick?””
Daniel glanced at Amy.
“She can explain.””
I looked at my wife.
She looked broken.
Not guilty.
Broken.
“Tell me.””
Amy took a shaky breath.
“When I was eighteen, I found out something about my family.””
She sat down slowly.
“My father had another child.””
I frowned.
“Another child?””
She nodded.
“My half-brother.””
The room was silent.
“I never knew about him until I found old documents.””
“Where was he?””
She looked down.
“He was adopted.””
“Why?””
Her voice became smaller.
“Because my father didn’t want anyone knowing he existed.””
I stared at her.
“Why?””
“Because his mother threatened to expose him.””
“To expose what?””
Amy looked at Daniel.
Then back at me.
“Financial fraud.””
The pieces started moving.
Richard Parker.
Control.
Secrets.
Documents.
Children.
Inheritance.
But I still didn’t understand Frederick’s connection.
“Why does this involve our son?””
Daniel answered.
“Because Richard Parker believes the child connected to that dispute may have legal claims against his estate.””
I looked at Frederick.
My son.
My baby.
“What are you saying?””
Daniel’s expression remained calm.
“I’m saying Richard believes Frederick may not only be your son.””
The room went silent.
Amy gasped.
“No.””
I looked at her.
The pain on her face wasn’t the expression of someone hiding betrayal.
It was the expression of someone hearing a nightmare spoken aloud.
I turned toward Daniel.
“You’re accusing my wife of cheating?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
“I’m saying Richard Parker is using uncertainty as leverage.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Daniel continued.
“He wants you afraid.””
“Why?””
“Because scared people sign documents.””
I looked at the paper.
The release.
The deadline.
The threats.
Suddenly everything made sense.
This wasn’t about truth.
It was about pressure.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Your father-in-law believes you will do anything to protect your family.””
“He’s right.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked at Frederick.
“That is exactly why this works.””
Amy stood.
“Connor, I swear to you—”
I looked at her.
She stopped.
I saw the fear in her eyes.
Not fear of losing me.
Fear that I would believe them.
I walked toward her.
“Amy.””
She looked up.
“I need the truth.””
She nodded.
“I never cheated on you.””
“I know.””
She looked surprised.
I continued.
“But I need to know what Richard thinks he has.””
Amy wiped her tears.
“Before we met, I found documents about my father’s business.””
“What kind?””
“Records.””
“Of what?””
“People he had controlled.””
My expression hardened.
“And?””
“One of those records mentioned my mother.””
I frowned.
“Your mother?””
“My biological mother.””
I froze.
“Amy…”
She nodded.
“I was told she died when I was young.””
The room went quiet.
“But the records suggested she didn’t.””
My heart pounded.
“What happened to her?””
Amy looked at the folder.
“I don’t know.””
Daniel spoke.
“Richard Parker has spent years removing evidence connected to his past.””
I looked at him.
“And you work for him.””
“I used to.””
The answer surprised me.
“Used to?””
Daniel nodded.
“I stopped after I realized what he was doing.””
“Then why are you here?””
He looked at the clock.
“Because he is running out of time.””
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at the front door.
“Because tomorrow morning, he planned to finalize the property transfer.””
I stared at him.
“And the loan?””
“Part of a larger agreement.””
“Between who?””
Daniel hesitated.
Then said:
“Richard Parker, Marcus Hale, Teresa Bradley, and Evan Bradley.””
I looked at my mother.
She started crying.
“Connor, please.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
She reached for me.
“I never wanted this.””
“But you allowed it.””
“I thought I could control it.””
“You couldn’t.””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I couldn’t.””
For once, she admitted it.
Daniel closed the folder.
“There is one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He pulled out another document.
“This was found in Marcus Hale’s office.””
He placed it on the table.
I looked down.
The title made my heart stop.
*GUARDIANSHIP SUCCESSION AGREEMENT*
My blood ran cold.
“What is this?””
Daniel looked at Frederick.
“It was created six months ago.””
Amy whispered,
“No…”
I picked up the page.
The names were clear.
If something happened to me…
If I was unable to care for my son…
The proposed guardians were not Amy.
Not me.
Not anyone I would choose.
The document listed:
*Teresa Bradley and Richard Parker.*
I stared at it.
Then slowly looked up.
My own mother had helped create a plan where she could take my child.
And before anyone could speak, my phone buzzed.
A new message.
This time from Richard Parker.
May you like
Only five words.
*Ask Amy about the second baby.*
