Chapter 9: The Brother I Never Knew
The room went silent after Daniel said the name.
*Evan Bradley.*
I looked at my brother.
Then at the birth certificate.
Then back at him.
For several seconds, my mind refused to connect the two things.
It was impossible.
Evan had been my brother my entire life.
I remembered him stealing my toys when we were kids.
I remembered him breaking my skateboard and blaming the neighbor.
I remembered him standing beside me at our father’s funeral.
He wasn’t a stranger.
He wasn’t some hidden person from a forgotten chapter of my family.
He was Evan.
“Explain.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
Nobody moved.
I looked at Daniel.
“Explain why my brother’s name is on a birth certificate from before I was born.””
Daniel remained quiet.
Then he looked at Evan.
“Because he already knows.””
My eyes snapped toward him.
“You knew?””
Evan looked like he had been waiting years for this moment.
“I knew part of it.””
“Part?””
He swallowed.
“I knew I wasn’t Dad’s biological son.””
The words hit harder than any accusation that day.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Evan looked down.
“Mom told me when I was eighteen.””
I turned toward Teresa.
“You knew?””
She started crying.
“I never wanted either of you to find out this way.””
“Find out what?””
My voice rose.
“That you lied to both of us?””
Teresa shook her head.
“I was protecting you.””
I almost laughed.
That sentence again.
Everyone had used it.
Protecting me.
Protecting the family.
Protecting the future.
And somehow, every secret had destroyed the present.
I looked at Evan.
“Who was your real father?””
He didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The documents already had.
“Thomas Bradley.””
My father.
The man whose photograph still sat on my desk at work.
The man I spent my entire life trying to make proud.
The man who died believing our family was simple.
I looked at Teresa.
“Dad knew?””
She closed her eyes.
“No.””
The answer surprised me.
“He didn’t?””
She shook her head.
“Thomas believed Evan was his.””
I looked at Evan.
“And you?””
He gave a sad smile.
“I believed it too.””
The room felt smaller.
“So when did Richard Parker find out?””
Daniel answered.
“Years ago.””
“How?””
“Your father and Richard Parker were involved in the same business circles.””
I frowned.
“My father wasn’t involved with Richard.””
“Not officially.””
Daniel opened another file.
“But Richard had access to old records.””
He placed the papers on the table.
“He discovered that Evan’s birth records contained inconsistencies.””
Evan looked away.
“And he used it.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
Evan laughed quietly.
“For everything.””
He picked up the document.
“Do you know what it’s like to spend your entire life feeling like you’re the disappointment?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
I had always assumed Evan simply didn’t care.
He was reckless.
Impulsive.
Always chasing shortcuts.
But maybe there had been something underneath.
Something he never told anyone.
“Richard found me when I was twenty-six,” Evan continued.
I frowned.
“Why?””
“He said he knew the truth about my birth.””
Teresa covered her face.
“He threatened him.””
Evan nodded.
“He told me if I didn’t cooperate, he would expose everything.””
“What did he want?””
“At first?””
Evan looked at me.
“Information.””
My stomach tightened.
“What information?””
“About you.””
The answer hurt.
“What kind?””
“Your company.””
“My projects?””
“Yes.””
“My finances?””
“Yes.””
“My house?””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
I stepped away.
“So all this time…”
“I know.””
“You were helping him.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was brutal.
I stared at him.
“Why?””
His eyes filled.
“Because I thought I was finally worth something.””
Nobody spoke.
Evan continued.
“Richard made me feel like I mattered. He told me I was the rightful son. That I deserved what Dad built.””
I shook my head.
“Dad didn’t build anything for you or me. He built a family.””
Evan looked at the floor.
“I know that now.””
I wanted to stay angry.
I wanted to hate him.
But standing there, seeing the regret on his face, I realized something.
He had been manipulated.
Just like my mother.
Just like Amy.
Richard Parker had found every weakness in my family and pulled on it.
My mother’s guilt.
Evan’s insecurity.
Amy’s fear.
And my trust.
I turned to Daniel.
“What is Richard’s actual plan?””
Daniel took a breath.
“He wants control over three things.””
He held up one finger.
“Your property.””
Another.
“Your company.””
Another.
“Your wife’s trust.””
I looked at Amy.
“And how does Evan fit into that?””
Daniel answered.
“Richard needed someone with a legitimate connection to the Bradley family.””
“Evan.””
“Yes.””
“He wanted Evan to inherit.””
“Yes.””
I looked at the birth certificate.
“But if Evan is my brother, why hide it?””
“Because Richard needed the timing.””
“What timing?””
Daniel pointed toward the date.
“The ownership transfer.””
I looked at the papers.
“The transfer happens tomorrow.””
“Yes.””
“And if Evan becomes owner?””
“Richard gains influence over the property.””
I frowned.
“But why would Evan agree?””
Evan closed his eyes.
“Because I thought I was getting a chance to rebuild my life.””
I looked at him.
“And now?””
He looked at me.
“Now I know I was just another piece.””
A sound came from the hallway.
Frederick.
He started crying.
Amy immediately went to him.
The moment she picked him up, I saw something in her expression.
Exhaustion.
Fear.
Love.
She had been carrying all of this alone.
I walked toward her.
“Amy.””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t apologize yet.””
Her eyes lowered.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
She nodded.
“I know.””
I softened my voice.
“But I need to know one more thing.””
“What?””
“Does Richard know about Frederick?””
Her face changed.
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He knows everything.””
A chill went through me.
“Everything?””
Amy nodded.
“He knows the hospital records. He knows my trust. He knows about your company.””
“And the second baby?””
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
“The second baby was never about Frederick.””
I waited.
“It was about Evan.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Daniel explained.
“Richard discovered Evan’s birth history. He also discovered that Thomas Bradley’s estate contained assets that were never transferred.””
My eyes widened.
“Assets?””
“Yes.””
“Where?””
Daniel opened another file.
“Your father created a private account before he died.””
I stared.
“Why?””
“He intended to reveal the truth about Evan.””
Evan looked shocked.
“What?””
Daniel nodded.
“But he never got the chance.””
“Why?””
Nobody answered.
Then Teresa whispered,
“Because Richard knew.””
The room went cold.
I looked at her.
“Knew what?””
She looked at the floor.
“The night your father died.””
My breathing stopped.
“What about it?””
Teresa’s hands shook.
“He wasn’t planning to go to work that morning.””
I stared.
“Mom.””
She cried.
“I lied.””
The confession hung in the air.
“What are you saying?””
She looked at me.
“Your father was going to meet someone.””
“Who?””
Her voice barely came out.
“Richard Parker.””
No one moved.
The entire foundation of my life shifted again.
“My father was meeting Richard?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Teresa looked toward Evan.
“Because he discovered the truth.””
I felt my heart pounding.
“What truth?””
She whispered,
“That Evan was his son.””
A painful silence followed.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone looked at it.
I answered.
A man’s voice came through.
Calm.
Confident.
Richard Parker.
“Connor.””
I said nothing.
“You finally know.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What do you want?””
A pause.
Then he said,
“I want my daughter back.””
I looked at Amy.
She froze.
Richard continued.
“And I want my grandson.””
My blood turned cold.
“You will never touch my family.””
A quiet laugh.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You think this is about money.””
I looked at the documents.
The house.
The loan.
The signatures.
Richard’s voice lowered.
“It was never about taking your house, Connor.””
My chest tightened.
“Then what was it about?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Finding out if you were willing to choose your wife over your family.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
And then Daniel looked at the clock.
His face changed.
“What?””
He pointed at the screen.
“Midnight.””
I frowned.
“What about midnight?””
Daniel picked up the transfer documents.
“That was the deadline.””
“For what?””
He looked at me.
“The ownership transfer.””
My stomach dropped.
“But we stopped it.””
Daniel shook his head.
“No.””
He turned the page.
The final signature line was already completed.
My blood went cold.
Because underneath the signature that was supposed to be mine…
was my name.
And beside it…
May you like
was a timestamp.
*11:59 PM.*
