Chapter 5: The Bloodline Nobody Wanted Revealed

For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Richard Cole was Ethan's biological father.
My grandson had been raised by Daniel, called him Daddy, and trusted him with every part of his little world.
And now I was looking at evidence that the man who had been threatening our family was connected to Ethan in a way none of us had imagined.
Claire stood up.
"No.""
Robert looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
"No, that's impossible.""
She walked toward the window, shaking her head.
"Richard has been coming to our family dinners for years. He watched Ethan grow up.""
Robert closed the DNA report.
"We need to verify the authenticity of this document before making any conclusions.""
I barely heard him.
I was remembering Ethan's first birthday.
Daniel had carried him around the garden while Margaret took photographs.
Richard had stood near the barbecue, laughing with the other guests.
At one point, he had held Ethan and told me the boy had beautiful eyes.
I remembered Daniel looking uncomfortable.
I had assumed it was jealousy.
Now I wondered whether he had known the truth all along.
"Did Mia know?"" I asked.
Robert looked at the video file.
"Your wife says she did.""
Claire turned around.
"Then why did she stay with Daniel?""
"That is a question for her," Robert replied.
I picked up my phone.
I needed to speak to Daniel.
Robert immediately stopped me.
"Don't call him.""
"He's my son.""
"And he may be involved in a criminal scheme. Anything you say could compromise the evidence.""
"What if Ethan is in danger?""
Robert's expression softened.
"Then we contact the appropriate authorities and make sure the children are protected. But we do not warn the people we're investigating.""
Claire returned to the chair.
"There's something else, Dad.""
She took out her phone.
"I received another message this morning.""
She showed us the screen.
*You need to stop asking about Ethan's father. Some truths destroy families.*
The message had been sent from the same unknown number.
Robert photographed it.
"Don't respond.""
I looked at my daughter.
"Has Daniel ever told you anything about Richard?""
She hesitated.
"Actually, yes.""
"What?""
"About a year ago, Daniel called me after midnight. He was drunk.""
"What did he say?""
"He asked whether I thought a man could raise a child knowing he wasn't biologically his.""
I stared at her.
"What did you tell him?""
"I told him that being a father wasn't about DNA.""
She swallowed.
"Then he started crying.""
I closed my eyes.
For the first time, I wondered whether Daniel's cruelty toward Ethan came from something deeper than fear.
Had he spent nine years resenting a child who had done nothing wrong?
Or was there another secret?
Robert interrupted my thoughts.
"Mr. Harrison, I want you to listen carefully. Your wife appears to have created the trust to protect the family. We need to determine whether Daniel and Richard used fraudulent documents to gain control of it.""
He printed several pages.
"I'll contact the bank, the original trust administrator, and a forensic specialist. Meanwhile, you should secure your house and change every password connected to your accounts.""
He paused.
"And I strongly recommend that you arrange for Ethan and Lily to stay somewhere safe.""
Claire immediately reached for her phone.
"I'll call Mia.""
"No," I said.
Both looked at me.
"Mia may be involved. We need to know who we can trust.""
Claire lowered the phone.
"Then what do we do?""
I looked at the photograph of Ethan.
"We find out what happened to that envelope.""
At 3:15 p.m., I returned home alone.
Claire stayed with Robert to prepare the legal documents.
I had just unlocked the front door when I heard a noise upstairs.
A drawer closing.
I froze.
"Hello?""
No answer.
I moved slowly toward the staircase.
The house smelled of furniture polish and the cinnamon candles Margaret used to burn in the winter.
I reached the landing.
My bedroom door was open.
Inside, someone was standing beside the dresser.
Mia.
She turned sharply.
"Thomas!""
"What are you doing here?""
She looked at the open drawer.
"Looking for something.""
"What?""
She closed the drawer.
"Nothing.""
I stepped inside.
"You're becoming very familiar with my bedroom.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
"Then explain.""
She looked toward the hallway.
"Is Daniel here?""
"No.""
"Are you sure?""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
She sat on the edge of the bed.
"Because I need to tell you something, and if he finds out, everything will get worse.""
I folded my arms.
"Start talking.""
Mia looked down at her hands.
"Richard is Ethan's biological father.""
"I know.""
She looked up.
For the first time, she seemed genuinely shocked.
"How?""
"Your mother-in-law left evidence.""
Mia covered her mouth.
"Margaret knew?""
"She knew everything.""
Mia began crying.
I pulled a chair closer.
"Tell me how it happened.""
She shook her head.
"It was before Daniel and I got married.""
"How long before?""
"Almost ten years ago.""
I waited.
"Daniel and I were having problems. He was traveling constantly. He was working with Richard, and I was lonely. One night, Richard came to the house while Daniel was away.""
She looked at me.
"I made a terrible mistake.""
I said nothing.
"Then I discovered I was pregnant.""
"And you told Daniel?""
"Yes.""
"Did you tell him Richard might be the father?""
She nodded.
"He knew.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Then why did he raise Ethan?""
Mia wiped her face.
"Because he wanted to believe Ethan was his.""
"Did you take a DNA test?""
"Yes.""
"Who arranged it?""
"Margaret.""
I leaned forward.
"Your mother-in-law arranged it?""
Mia nodded.
"She found out when Ethan was two. She noticed that Daniel was behaving strangely. He kept asking questions about the pregnancy, and one day he confronted me.""
She looked toward the window.
"Margaret took me aside. She told me that whatever happened, Ethan deserved the truth.""
"What did the test show?""
"That Richard was his biological father.""
I stared at her.
"Why didn't Margaret tell me?""
"Because she believed Daniel would hurt Ethan if he found out.""
My hands tightened.
"Has he hurt him?""
Mia looked away.
That was answer enough.
I stood.
"What has Daniel done to my grandson?""
"Not physically," she whispered.
"Then what?""
"He tells Ethan that he's the reason we're in debt. He says if Ethan talks about certain things, the family will lose the house.""
I remembered Ethan's words.
Dad said if you ever checked the cameras, we would all lose everything.
Mia continued.
"Daniel makes him feel responsible for everything that's happening.""
I sat down again.
"Why?""
"Because Ethan saw something.""
"What?""
She hesitated.
"Three months ago, Ethan was playing in Daniel's office. He found a folder containing bank documents and photographs of your house. He asked Daniel why your name was on the papers.""
"And?""
"Daniel became furious. He told him never to mention it again.""
"Did Ethan tell you?""
"Yes.""
"Then why didn't you come to me?""
She began crying harder.
"Because Daniel threatened to take the children.""
I looked at her.
"On what grounds?""
"He said he had recordings of me admitting the affair. He said he would use them to prove I was unstable and unfit to be a mother.""
I felt anger rising.
"That's not enough to take your children.""
"I know that now.""
She reached into her handbag.
Then she pulled out a small envelope.
It was old, cream-colored, and sealed with Margaret's initials.
My heart stopped.
"Where did you get that?""
Mia placed it on the bed.
"Margaret gave it to me before she died.""
I picked it up.
"Why?""
"She told me to keep it until the children were old enough to understand.""
I examined the envelope.
Written across the front were the words:
*For Thomas and Ethan. If Daniel crosses the line.*
I opened it.
Inside was a letter, a photocopy of the DNA report, and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Margaret standing beside a younger Richard Cole.
They were outside a hospital.
On the back, Margaret had written:
Richard knows what happened. He also knows why Ethan must never become part of their business.
I looked at Mia.
"What business?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Then why did you take the envelope from the bank?""
Her face crumpled.
"Because Daniel asked me to.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
"He found out about the safety deposit box. He told me to retrieve the envelope before you did.""
"Did you give it to him?""
She shook her head.
"Not all of it.""
I looked down at the letter.
"What do you mean?""
She reached into her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small memory card.
"I copied everything before I gave him the envelope.""
I stared at her.
"What's on it?""
"Recordings.""
"What recordings?""
"Conversations between Daniel and Richard. I started recording them because I was afraid of what they were planning.""
She placed the card in my palm.
Then she looked directly into my eyes.
"Thomas, you need to understand something. Richard doesn't just want the trust money.""
"Then what does he want?""
Mia's voice dropped.
"He wants Ethan.""
I felt the room grow cold.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know exactly. But I heard Daniel say something about Ethan inheriting a company that doesn't belong to him.""
I looked at the photograph again.
Then at the memory card.
Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.
It was Claire.
"Where are you, Dad?""
"At home.""
"Get out immediately.""
"Why?""
"I just spoke to Robert. He checked the original trust records.""
"What did he find?""
Her voice trembled.
"Mom didn't leave Daniel in control of the trust. She removed him completely.""
I looked at Mia.
Claire continued.
"Someone forged a new appointment after Mom died. But there's a clause in the original agreement that makes every transaction Daniel authorized invalid if he wasn't legally appointed.""
I gripped the phone.
"That's good news.""
"No, Dad. You don't understand.""
"What?""
"Mom named a different person as the replacement trustee.""
"Who?""
Claire took a breath.
Then she said:
"Richard Cole.""
I slowly lowered the phone.
Mia began shaking her head.
"No. No, that's impossible.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She whispered:
"Because Richard told Daniel he had no legal claim to the trust.""
My phone vibrated again.
A new message.
This time, it included an audio file.
The sender was Daniel.
The message read:
*Listen carefully before you decide to trust Mia. She isn't telling you everything.*
I pressed play.
Daniel's voice filled the room.
"Richard, I don't care what Margaret promised you. Ethan is my son. And if you think I'm going to let you take him after everything I've sacrificed, you're out of your mind.""
Another voice answered.
Richard.
"Then give me the ledger.""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You still don't understand, do you? The ledger isn't the problem.""
A pause.
Then Richard spoke again.
"Then what is?""
Daniel's answer made my blood run cold.
"Because Ethan isn't the only child Margaret protected.""
The recording ended.
Mia stared at me.
I stared back.
"What does that mean?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
But before either of us could say another word, the front door opened.
A little voice called from downstairs.
"Grandpa?""
Ethan.
I rushed toward the staircase.
My grandson stood in the entrance holding his school backpack.
His eyes were red.
May you like
He looked at me, then at Mia.
"Grandpa," he whispered, "I need to tell you something about Lily.""
