Chapter 9: The Secret My Best Friend Carried

The room changed the moment everyone looked at Tasha.

Not because anyone accused her.

Not because anyone said her name with anger.

But because she didn’t defend herself.

That was the thing that scared me most.

Tasha had always been fearless.

When we were teenagers, she was the girl who would stand up to anyone.

When I was bullied in school, she was the one who walked into the cafeteria and told everyone to stop.

When my first boyfriend broke my heart, she drove three hours just to sit beside me on my bedroom floor.

Tasha was the person I trusted when everyone else disappeared.

And now she was standing in front of me with tears in her eyes, looking like she had been carrying something too heavy for too long.

“Maya,” she whispered.

I stared at her.

“Tell me.””

Her lips parted.

Nothing came out.

I felt something inside me sink.

“Tell me you didn’t know.””

She looked down.

That was enough.

My heart broke in a completely different way.

Not like with Jordan.

Not like with my father.

Because I expected betrayal from people who had something to hide.

But Tasha?

She was supposed to be the one person who didn’t.

“Tasha.””

She looked up.

“I didn’t know everything.””

The words were careful.

Too careful.

I laughed softly.

“Everyone says that.””

“Maya, please.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“No more half-truths.””

The entire room was silent.

“I need someone to finally tell me the whole thing.””

Tasha wiped her tears.

“I swear I never wanted to hurt you.””

“Then why did you keep secrets?””

Her face crumpled.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

That sentence.

The excuse everyone used.

Protect you.

Everyone had protected me until there was nothing left of my ability to choose.

“What did you know?””

Tasha looked at Jordan.

Then at Claire.

Then back at me.

“I knew Claire was alive.””

The words felt like another blow.

I stepped back.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

She swallowed.

“Six months.””

The room erupted.

My mother would have been proud of my ability to stay standing, because I honestly didn’t know how I was still upright.

Six months.

Six months my sister had been alive.

Six months my best friend knew.

Six months I was living in a lie.

“You knew before I started planning my wedding.””

Tasha started crying.

“Yes.””

“You watched me talk about Jordan.””

“Yes.””

“You watched me say I was finally happy.””

Her tears fell faster.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

She looked broken.

“Because Claire made me promise.””

I froze.

“Claire?””

Claire stepped forward.

“Tasha didn’t betray you.””

I looked at my sister.

“Don’t defend her.””

“I’m not.””

Claire shook her head.

“I’m telling you the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Claire took a breath.

“When I came back, I didn’t know who I could trust.””

The words hurt.

Because apparently everyone had been afraid.

“I contacted Tasha first.””

Tasha nodded.

“She was the only person I knew who would choose Maya over everyone else.””

I looked at Tasha.

“And then?””

Claire looked down.

“I asked her not to tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because I needed time.””

I stared.

“Time for what?””

Claire’s voice broke.

“To make sure the person who caused everything couldn’t hurt you too.””

I looked at Richard.

“David?””

Richard shook his head.

“No.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was different this time.

Not fear.

Not hesitation.

Something worse.

Shame.

I turned to Tasha.

“You know.””

She nodded.

My heart shattered.

“Who?””

She closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“My mother.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Tasha looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

“My mother helped cover up the accident.””

The room went silent.

I felt like I had been thrown into another nightmare.

“Tasha’s mother?””

Tasha nodded.

“My mother worked for your father’s company. She handled some of the financial records.””

Richard’s expression changed.

“She had access.””

“Yes.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Tasha took a shaky breath.

“She was the person who helped David move money.””

The pieces started connecting.

Too many people.

Too many secrets.

Too many lives connected by one night.

“But why would she help him?””

Tasha looked ashamed.

“Because David threatened her.””

“With what?””

“She had been stealing money too.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

Another betrayal.

Another person who made one terrible choice and spent years trying to hide it.

“My mother knew David caused the accident,” Tasha continued.

I looked at her.

“And she stayed quiet?””

“She was afraid.””

I almost laughed.

Again.

Fear.

The word that destroyed everything.

“What does this have to do with Claire?””

Tasha looked at my sister.

“Because after the accident, my mother found out Claire survived.””

My chest tightened.

“And?””

“She told David.””

The room went completely still.

Claire covered her mouth.

“No.””

Tasha nodded, crying.

“She didn’t know what he would do.””

“But she told him.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

Because I didn’t know how to hold all of this.

Everyone I loved had been connected to the same nightmare.

Everyone had touched the truth.

And somehow, I was the only person left outside of it.

“Tasha,” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Why did you really stand up today?””

Her face changed.

The question mattered.

Because there had to be a reason.

“If you knew six months ago, why wait until my wedding?””

She looked at Jordan.

Then at me.

“Because Jordan was going to leave the country after today.””

I froze.

“What?””

Jordan looked away.

My eyes moved to him.

“Is that true?””

He didn’t answer.

“TELL ME.””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

The answer felt like a final betrayal.

“Why?””

Jordan swallowed.

“Because I was afraid.””

I shook my head.

“Of what?””

“Of David finding out I had evidence.””

I stared.

“What evidence?””

Jordan reached into his jacket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this in David’s office.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“What is that?””

Jordan looked at him.

“Everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Everything?””

He nodded.

“Proof of the fraud. Proof he followed us that night. Proof he tried to destroy evidence.””

“Then why didn’t you go to the police?””

His face broke.

“Because there was something else on it.””

I waited.

“What?””

Jordan looked at Claire.

Then at me.

“There was a video.””

A cold chill moved through the room.

“Of what?””

Jordan’s voice became barely audible.

“The accident.””

Nobody breathed.

“The whole thing.””

I stared.

“Then we can finally know the truth.””

Jordan looked at the flash drive.

“No.””

My heart sank.

“Why?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because the video shows something I never told anyone.””

“What?””

He looked directly at me.

And for the first time, I saw real terror.

Not guilt.

Not fear of consequences.

Terror.

“Maya…”

He swallowed.

“I wasn’t the only one who survived that night.””

I felt cold.

“What are you saying?””

Jordan looked at the flash drive.

“The person who caused the accident…”

A pause.

“The person who was following us…”

Another pause.

“He was in the car with me and Claire.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Jordan looked at my father.

Then at Claire.

Then at me.

“He wasn’t chasing us.””

My heartbeat stopped.

“He was escaping from us.””

Nobody moved.

Jordan held the flash drive tighter.

May you like

And whispered:

“Because the person in that car was someone we all thought was dead.””
