Chapter 3: The Truth He Buried Before Our Love Began

The room felt smaller the moment Elena walked forward.

Not because she was threatening.

Not because she raised her voice.

But because Jordan looked at her like she was holding a weapon.

And the worst part was realizing that I had never seen that expression on his face before.

I had seen Jordan stressed.

I had seen him frustrated.

I had seen him exhausted after long days at work.

But fear?

Never.

Not until the woman from his past stood in front of our wedding guests holding something he desperately wanted hidden.

“Maya,” Jordan said quietly, “you don’t need to listen to her.””

I looked at him.

The sentence should have comforted me.

Instead, it made my stomach twist.

Because why was he trying so hard to stop me from hearing the truth?

“Why?”” I asked.

He hesitated.

“Because she’s not telling the whole story.””

Elena gave a sad smile.

“That’s interesting coming from someone who spent years making sure nobody knew any of it.””

Jordan’s face tightened.

“Don’t act like you’re innocent.””

A wave of whispers moved through the room.

There was anger in his voice now.

Not fear.

Not guilt.

Anger.

And somehow, that frightened me more.

Elena looked at me.

“I know this is impossible to understand right now.””

I almost laughed.

Impossible was the only word that fit.

My wedding dress still hung perfectly around me. My hair was still pinned exactly the way I had imagined. My bouquet was still in my hand.

Everything about me looked like a bride.

Except I no longer felt like one.

I felt like someone standing at the scene of a crime.

“What is that?”” I asked, pointing to the object in Elena’s hand.

She looked down.

Then back at me.

“A phone.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“A phone?””

She nodded.

“Not just any phone.””

Jordan immediately stepped forward.

“Elena, give it to me.””

“No.””

“You have no right.””

“I have every right.””

The confidence in her voice made the room go silent.

My heart pounded.

“Why?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because this phone contains the messages Jordan sent me before he proposed to you.””

I stopped breathing.

Before he proposed?

I looked at Jordan.

He didn’t deny it.

That was enough.

“Jordan…”

He swallowed.

“Maya, it’s not what you think.””

I shook my head slowly.

“I don’t think anything anymore.””

The words came out softer than I expected.

But they hurt him.

I saw it.

For a second, his expression changed.

Like he realized he was losing me.

Good.

Because I was starting to realize I had already lost something too.

Trust.

Elena unlocked the phone.

Her fingers moved carefully.

Then she walked toward me.

“I didn’t want to do this today.””

I looked at her.

“Then why did you?””

Her eyes filled with regret.

“Because Jordan was never going to tell you.””

Jordan’s voice rose.

“Stop pretending you’re doing this for her.””

Elena turned toward him.

“Then tell her yourself.””

Silence.

Again.

That silence.

The one that answered questions before anyone spoke.

I closed my eyes briefly.

“Show me.””

Elena looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

I almost hated that she asked.

Because part of me wanted to run.

Part of me wanted to leave the room, get in a car, and pretend none of this happened.

But another part of me—the part that had spent three years loving this man—needed answers.

“Yes.””

Elena handed me the phone.

The screen showed a conversation.

A conversation between Jordan and Elena.

The first message was dated seven months earlier.

My hands trembled as I read.

*Jordan: I need you to stay away from Maya.*

I frowned.

The message wasn’t what I expected.

I kept reading.

*Elena: You can’t keep pretending this didn’t happen.*

Then Jordan’s reply.

*Jordan: I’m trying to fix it.*

My heartbeat increased.

Fix what?

I scrolled further.

*Elena: You don’t fix something by marrying another woman.*

My eyes froze on those words.

Marrying another woman.

I looked up.

Jordan was watching me.

“Maya—”

I kept reading.

*Jordan: I love her.*

For a second, my heart softened.

A tiny, foolish part of me grabbed onto those words.

He loved me.

Then I saw the next message.

*Jordan: But she can never know what happened.*

The room disappeared.

I couldn’t hear the whispers anymore.

I couldn’t hear the music.

I couldn’t hear anyone.

Only that sentence.

She can never know.

My fingers went numb.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Jordan.

“What happened?””

He stepped toward me.

“Maya, please let me explain.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, I asked you a question.””

He stopped.

“What happened?””

His face changed.

And suddenly, I wasn’t looking at my fiancé.

I was looking at a man who had been carrying a secret so heavy that he built our entire relationship around hiding it.

Elena spoke quietly.

“Ten years ago, Jordan was involved in a car accident.””

I looked at her.

“What does that have to do with you?””

She looked at Jordan.

“Tell her.””

He looked away.

That was the answer.

I turned back to Elena.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“Ten years ago, Jordan was driving after drinking.””

A gasp came from somewhere behind me.

My hand flew to my mouth.

“No.””

Jordan immediately shook his head.

“I wasn’t drunk.””

Elena looked at him.

“You were.””

“I made a mistake.””

“A mistake?””

Her voice broke.

“You almost destroyed someone’s life.””

My heart was racing.

“What happened?””

Elena looked down.

“My younger brother was in the other car.””

The room went completely silent.

I felt cold.

“What?””

“He survived,” she said quickly.

“But he was injured badly. He spent months in the hospital.””

I looked at Jordan.

He looked like he wanted to disappear.

“And you never told me?””

“Maya—”

“You never told me?””

His voice dropped.

“I was ashamed.””

I laughed once.

A painful, empty sound.

“Ashamed?””

I held up the phone.

“You hid a life-changing secret from me, and you’re calling it shame?””

“I wanted to tell you.””

“When?””

He didn’t answer.

“When were you planning to tell me?””

The truth was there.

He wasn’t.

Not unless someone forced him.

Elena wiped a tear from her cheek.

“There’s more.””

Jordan’s eyes widened.

“No.””

My body went still.

There was that fear again.

The fear I had noticed earlier.

“More?””

Elena nodded.

“The accident wasn’t the only thing he hid.””

Jordan stepped toward her.

“Don’t.””

But Elena didn’t stop.

“He paid me because he wanted my silence.””

The room erupted.

My father stood up.

“What?””

My mother looked horrified.

Jordan’s face turned red.

“That’s not true.””

Elena stared at him.

“You paid my medical bills because you didn’t want the truth coming out.””

“That’s not why.””

“Then why?””

Jordan opened his mouth.

Nothing came.

Again.

Nothing.

I felt something inside me breaking piece by piece.

Because suddenly every strange moment from the last few months came rushing back.

The late-night calls.

The secret meetings.

The sudden anxiety.

The way he became nervous whenever I asked about his past.

I had thought he was stressed about work.

I had thought he was preparing for our future.

But he had been preparing for me to never discover his past.

“I don’t understand,” I whispered.

Jordan looked at me.

“I love you.””

The words felt wrong.

Not because they were fake.

But because love without honesty felt like a house built on sand.

“You love me?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you trust me with the truth?””

He looked devastated.

“Because I knew I could lose you.””

I stared at him.

And there it was.

The real reason.

Not protecting me.

Not protecting my feelings.

Protecting himself.

The officiant quietly stepped away.

Guests started gathering their things.

My perfect wedding was disappearing around me.

Then Elena spoke again.

“There’s one thing you still don’t know, Maya.””

I looked at her.

My heart sank.

“What?””

She looked at Jordan.

Then at me.

“The accident wasn’t reported the way it should have been.””

Jordan’s face went completely pale.

I noticed.

Everyone noticed.

“What does that mean?”” I asked.

Elena’s voice lowered.

“It means someone changed the police report.””

I looked at Jordan.

He didn’t move.

He didn’t speak.

He didn’t even blink.

And that was when I realized the secret wasn’t just that he had hidden an accident.

It was that he had hidden what happened after.

Elena stepped closer.

“The person who helped Jordan cover it up…”

She paused.

May you like

Then looked directly at me.

“Is someone you know.””
