Chapter 9: The Friend Behind the Door
For a few seconds, nobody in the diner remembered how to breathe.
Lena.
The name sat between us like a loaded weapon.
Blu’s face had gone completely pale.
“No.””
It was barely a whisper.
I looked at her.
“You know I’m right.””
“No.””
She shook her head harder this time.
“Bree, you don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
My voice cracked.
“Because right now, the person who was supposed to help you start over is the same person standing behind the reason you needed to start over.””
Blu looked at the message again.
Her hands were shaking.
“She wouldn’t do this.””
Dre let out a bitter laugh.
“Wouldn’t she?””
Blu turned toward him.
“Don’t.””
“No, Blu.””
His voice was low.
“We have spent years protecting people who didn’t deserve it.””
Eli stared at the phone.
“She’s been here the whole time.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
Eli’s expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“She didn’t disappear after Noah.””
My heart sank.
“You knew?””
He looked at me.
“I suspected.””
I almost laughed.
“Of course you did.””
His jaw tightened.
“I was trying to find proof.””
“And you didn’t think to tell anyone?””
“Who would have believed me?””
That stopped me.
Because unfortunately…
I understood.
Everyone had spent years believing their own version of events.
And somewhere in the middle, the truth had been buried.
Blu looked at Eli.
“You knew Lena?””
He hesitated.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt her.
I could see it.
“How?””
Eli looked away.
“She was there before everything happened.””
“Before Noah?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He didn’t answer.
“Eli.””
His eyes moved to Blu.
“Because Lena was the person who introduced me to you.””
The room went silent.
Blu looked like she had been slapped.
“What?””
“She told me about you.””
“No.””
“She told me you were lonely.””
Blu shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
“She told me exactly what you needed to hear.””
The pain on Blu’s face changed.
Confusion.
Then realization.
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“Blu?””
She looked at me.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I thought…”
Her voice broke.
“I thought Lena saved me.””
Nobody spoke.
“She was the one who convinced me to leave.””
Dre looked stunned.
“What?””
Blu covered her mouth.
“She told me I deserved better. She told me Eli was dangerous.””
Eli’s expression darkened.
“And you believed her.””
Blu looked at him.
“Because she was right.””
The words hurt everyone.
Because they were complicated.
Eli didn’t look angry.
He looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
A long silence.
“I was.””
Nobody expected him to admit that.
Not even Blu.
“I was controlling. I was angry. I hurt people.””
His voice lowered.
“But Lena didn’t help you because she cared about you.””
Blu stared.
“What are you saying?””
Eli looked at the phone.
“I’m saying she needed you to hate me.””
The room went cold.
“Why?””
Eli looked at me.
“Because if everyone believed I was the monster…”
A pause.
“Then nobody would look at her.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she do?””
Nobody answered.
Then Dre spoke.
“She killed Noah.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed the room.
Blu turned.
“What?””
Dre looked broken.
“I didn’t want to believe it.””
Marlo stared at him.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
Everyone looked at him.
Dre shook his head.
“After Noah died, Lena was the first person who showed up.””
Blu’s face changed.
“She said she wanted to help.””
Dre nodded.
“She knew details nobody had told her.””
The memories were clearly coming back.
“She knew where Noah was.””
“She knew what happened.””
“She knew things only someone there would know.””
Blu stepped back.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, she was my friend.””
I moved toward her.
“Blu…”
“She held me when I cried.””
Her eyes filled.
“She helped me pack.””
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“She told me I wasn’t crazy.””
Nobody knew what to say.
Because that was the cruelest kind of betrayal.
Not from an enemy.
From someone who made you feel safe.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another message.
From Lena.
*“You’re all finally remembering.””*
Then another.
*“But you’re still missing the biggest part.””*
My fingers went cold.
A video appeared.
Nobody wanted to press it.
But we did.
The screen showed a room.
An old room.
I recognized it immediately.
Blu’s old apartment.
Before Baltimore.
Before everything.
The camera was hidden.
Lena’s voice could be heard.
“She trusts me.””
The camera moved.
Blu was sitting on the couch.
Crying.
Lena was beside her.
“You’re doing the right thing,” Lena said.
Blu wiped her face.
“I don’t know if I can.””
“You can.””
The video paused.
Then continued.
A different day.
A different conversation.
Lena again.
“If everyone thinks Eli did it, nobody will look closer.””
My heart stopped.
Dre whispered:
“Oh my God.””
Blu covered her mouth.
The video continued.
Lena was talking to someone off-camera.
A man.
“You need to disappear.””
The man answered.
“What about Noah?””
Lena’s voice became colder.
“He won’t be a problem.””
The video ended.
Nobody moved.
Because we finally had it.
The truth.
Not a rumor.
Not a theory.
Proof.
Marlo looked sick.
“I should have found this.””
Eli stared at the screen.
“She planned everything.””
Blu looked devastated.
“But why?””
Nobody answered.
Then I realized something.
“She didn’t want you to leave.””
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Blu.
“She wanted you dependent on her.””
Blu shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I swallowed.
“She became your protector.””
The words hurt.
“But only after she created the danger.””
Blu closed her eyes.
Because somewhere inside, she knew.
Lena hadn’t rescued her.
She had trapped her.
A loud sound came from outside.
Everyone turned.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Dre moved toward the window.
His face changed.
“What?””
I stood.
“What is it?””
He looked outside.
“She’s here.””
My heart stopped.
“Lena?””
Dre nodded.
Everyone moved at once.
Blu grabbed my hand.
“We need to leave.””
But before we reached the door, my phone buzzed.
One final message.
From Lena.
*“Don’t run.””*
I stared.
Then another appeared.
*“You deserve to know why I did it.””*
The diner door slowly opened.
And Lena walked in.
No panic.
No fear.
No attempt to hide.
She looked around at all of us.
Then smiled sadly.
“I knew this day would come.””
Nobody spoke.
She looked at Blu.
“I’m sorry.””
Blu’s voice shook.
“How could you?””
Lena’s eyes filled.
“Because I loved you.””
The words made everyone freeze.
“What?””
Lena looked at me.
“You think this was about hurting Blu?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Then she looked at Eli.
“It was about making sure she survived him.””
Eli stepped forward.
“You killed Noah.””
Lena’s face changed.
Pain.
Not guilt.
Pain.
“I saved her.””
Blu stared.
“What did you say?””
Lena took a breath.
Then whispered the sentence that changed everything.
“Because Noah wasn’t killed by me.””
A pause.
“He was killed because he was about to expose the person who started all of this.””
Everyone went silent.
Lena looked directly at Eli.
“The person who made sure nobody would ever know the truth.””
My heart stopped.
Because suddenly…
she wasn’t looking at Blu.
She wasn’t looking at Marlo.
She wasn’t looking at Dre.
She was looking at Eli.
May you like
And Eli’s face told me one thing.
He knew exactly what she was talking about.
