Chapter 7: The Man Who Never Disappeared
For five seconds, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not Dre.
Not Blu.
Not even the man standing behind her.
Eli.
The name that had existed for months as a ghost.
A warning.
A scar from someone else’s past.
Now he was standing ten feet away from me, breathing the same air, looking completely alive.
And somehow that was worse than if he had been dead.
Because dead people belonged to the past.
Alive people could come back.
“Dre.””
Eli said his name calmly.
Almost casually.
Like they were old friends running into each other after years apart.
Dre didn’t answer.
His body had gone completely still.
I had seen people freeze before.
Usually from shock.
But this was different.
This was recognition.
Fear.
“You’re supposed to be gone,” Dre whispered.
The man smiled slightly.
“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””
The sound of his voice made my skin crawl.
Not because he sounded dangerous.
Because he sounded normal.
That was the terrifying part.
Dangerous people were easy to spot.
The ones who smiled while destroying lives were harder.
Blu stepped forward.
“Eli, don’t.””
His eyes moved to her.
And the entire room changed.
Whatever confidence he had when he walked in disappeared for half a second.
Not much.
But enough.
Enough for me to notice.
“Blu.””
The way he said her name was strange.
Not like someone seeing an enemy.
Like someone seeing something he thought belonged to him.
“I didn’t expect you to bring them here.””
Blu’s face tightened.
“I didn’t bring them.””
Her eyes moved toward me.
“I came because I needed to tell Bree the truth.””
Eli looked at me.
And suddenly I understood something.
He knew exactly who I was.
“You’re Bree.””
I didn’t answer.
His expression softened.
“Blu talked about you.””
My stomach turned.
“She did?””
“Yes.””
He smiled faintly.
“She said you were the kind of person who would jump into a fire for someone else.””
I stared at him.
“And you know that because?””
“Because I listened.””
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
Dre stepped between us.
“Stay away from her.””
Eli looked at him.
Then laughed quietly.
A small laugh.
Almost disappointed.
“You’re still doing that?””
Dre’s jaw tightened.
“Doing what?””
“Pretending you’re the hero.””
The words hit Dre harder than I expected.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“No?””
Eli tilted his head.
“Then tell her what happened.””
Nobody spoke.
My eyes moved between them.
“What happened?””
Dre looked away.
Eli smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“The question nobody wants to answer.””
Blu stepped forward.
“Eli, stop.””
“No.””
His voice remained calm.
“I’m tired of everyone telling pieces of the story.””
He looked around the diner.
“Everyone has their own version.””
Then he looked at me.
“Marlo’s version.””
A pause.
“Dre’s version.””
Another pause.
“Blu’s version.””
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“But nobody ever asked mine.””
I crossed my arms.
“Fine.””
Everyone looked at me.
I held his gaze.
“Tell me.””
Dre immediately turned.
“Bree.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m done being protected.””
Eli watched me carefully.
“You really are exactly how she described you.””
I ignored that.
“What happened that night?””
The smile disappeared.
For the first time, he looked serious.
“The night my brother died?””
The diner became silent.
“Yes.””
Eli looked at Dre.
“Ask him.””
My eyes moved to Dre.
“What?””
Eli continued.
“Ask him why he was there.””
Dre looked angry.
“I told her.””
“No.””
Eli shook his head.
“You told her you were there.””
He stepped closer.
“But you didn’t tell her why.””
I looked at Dre.
“Why were you there?””
Dre didn’t answer.
“Dre.””
His hands curled into fists.
“Because Blu called me.””
“I know that.””
“No.””
His voice broke slightly.
“Because Blu called me after she called Eli.””
I froze.
Everyone went quiet.
I looked at Blu.
She looked away.
“Blu?””
She whispered:
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
Eli laughed once.
Bitterly.
“Exactly.””
Blu looked at him.
“Don’t.””
“You called me because you thought I could fix it.””
His eyes hardened.
“But you called Dre because you wanted someone else to blame.””
“That’s not true.””
“Isn’t it?””
The pain in Blu’s face made me realize something.
This wasn’t a simple story.
There wasn’t one villain.
One victim.
One perfect answer.
There were broken people everywhere.
“Someone explain,” I said.
Nobody spoke.
Then Blu finally did.
“The night Noah died…”
She stopped.
Her eyes filled.
“I went to meet Eli.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Noah found something.””
“What?””
Blu looked at Eli.
Then back at me.
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her voice dropped.
“Everything.””
The room went quiet.
“Everything Eli had done.””
Eli didn’t deny it.
That bothered me.
He just looked tired.
“Then what happened?””
Blu swallowed.
“Noah showed up.””
“Why?””
“Because he knew I was going alone.””
She looked down.
“He didn’t trust Eli.””
A silence.
“And he was right.””
Eli’s face changed.
Just slightly.
Blu continued.
“Noah had a recording.””
“A recording of what?””
She looked at me.
“Eli admitting what he did.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What did he do?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Eli spoke.
“Nothing.””
Everyone looked at him.
He shook his head.
“You want the truth?””
He looked directly at me.
“Then understand this.””
His voice lowered.
“People see what they want to see.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“It means Noah believed he was saving Blu.””
A pause.
“He wasn’t.””
Dre stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Eli ignored him.
“He brought a weapon.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
Blu immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“You know that’s not what happened.””
Eli looked at her.
“You remember differently.””
The tension between them was impossible to ignore.
Two people carrying the same night.
But remembering it completely differently.
I looked at Dre.
“What happened?””
Dre’s face was pale.
“I don’t know.””
“You were there.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
His voice cracked.
“I heard a fight.””
“And?””
“I heard Noah fall.””
My heart stopped.
“Fall?””
Dre nodded.
“I ran toward the river.””
“And what did you see?””
He closed his eyes.
“When I got there…”
He stopped.
“Dre.””
“I saw Blu.””
I looked at her.
She was crying now.
“And?””
Dre opened his eyes.
“She was holding Noah’s hand.””
Nobody spoke.
Eli looked away.
Then quietly said:
“Because she was trying to save him.””
The words surprised me.
Because they weren’t angry.
They were almost sad.
“Then why did everyone think he killed himself?””
Eli looked at me.
“Because someone changed the story.””
“Who?””
His eyes moved to Dre.
Dre went pale.
“No.””
Eli stepped closer.
“You know exactly who.””
Dre shook his head.
“Stop.””
“Tell her.””
“Stop!””
The entire diner went silent.
Dre looked broken.
Not angry.
Broken.
“I was scared.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He covered his face.
“I was scared.””
Blu whispered:
“Dre…”
“I didn’t know what to do.””
Eli’s expression hardened.
“You ran.””
Dre looked at him.
“You ran.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Dre said the words I never expected.
“I didn’t just run.””
He looked at me.
“I lied.””
My chest tightened.
“What did you lie about?””
Dre looked down.
And before he could answer, every phone in the diner seemed to go off at once.
Not everyone’s.
Just ours.
Mine.
Dre’s.
Blu’s.
Marlo’s.
A message.
Same number.
Same words.
I opened mine.
And felt the blood leave my face.
*“Good. Now that everyone is together, you can finally hear what really happened.””*
A video appeared underneath.
Dre stared at it.
Blu covered her mouth.
Eli looked genuinely confused.
I pressed play.
The screen loaded.
A dark room.
A shaky camera.
And then a voice.
A voice I recognized.
Marlo.
But the words coming from him…
changed everything.
“I’m sorry, Noah.””
The video continued.

And the next sentence made everyone in the diner stop breathing.
“I should have helped you before it was too late.””
