Chapter 9: The Betrayal Behind the Funeral
Nobody spoke.
Not one person.
The ballroom that had been prepared for vows and champagne had become a place where secrets were finally being dragged into the light.
Richard stood in the center of it all.
The man I had mourned.
The man I had loved.
The man who had returned carrying answers I desperately wanted.
And now he was telling me there was one more betrayal.
Someone inside our family.
My eyes searched his face.
"Who?""
The question came out quietly.
But everyone heard it.
Richard looked at me.
And I saw hesitation.
That was when I knew.
The answer wasn't going to be easy.
"Richard.""
His jaw tightened.
"I need you to understand something first.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"I don't need another explanation before the truth.""
The guests watched silently.
Weston stood between his past and his present, looking like he wanted to disappear.
Richard nodded slowly.
"You're right.""
He took a breath.
"The person who betrayed me was not someone I expected.""
I waited.
"It was your brother.""
The room went still.
My face went blank.
Because for a second, my mind refused to understand the words.
"My brother?""
Richard nodded.
"Thomas.""
The name echoed.
My younger brother.
The man who had stood beside me at Richard's funeral.
The man who had hugged me while I cried.
The man who had told me:
"Marguerite, I'll help you protect everything Richard built.""
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"No.""
Richard looked at me sadly.
"Yes.""
I shook my head.
"Thomas would never.""
"That is what made him dangerous.""
I stared at him.
"Explain.""
Richard walked closer.
"Thomas knew everything about our family.""
"Of course he did.""
"He knew the company.""
"Yes.""
"He knew the trust.""
I stopped.
Richard continued.
"He knew exactly how much money Weston would receive.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
"But why?""
Richard looked at Helena.
Then Priscilla.
"Because the Vales didn't create this plan alone.""
Helena looked away.
The first real sign of shame I had seen from her.
Richard continued.
"Thomas helped them.""
I couldn't breathe for a moment.
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"No, Richard.""
"I found the evidence two years ago.""
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
His expression broke.
"Because Thomas wasn't working alone.""
I stared.
"Who else?""
Richard looked toward Weston.
And my heart sank.
Because I already knew.
"No.""
Richard shook his head.
"Marguerite—"
"No.""
I stepped back.
"Don't say it.""
But he did.
"Weston was involved.""
The words hurt differently than before.
Because before, I had hoped.
I had believed he was only confused.
Only manipulated.
Only lost.
But now?
I didn't know what to believe.
Weston looked at his father.
"What?""
Richard looked at him.
"You were involved in the first stage.""
Weston shook his head.
"No.""
"You gave Priscilla information.""
"I didn't know what she was doing.""
"You told her about the trust.""
"I thought we were discussing our future.""
His voice rose.
"I didn't know!""
Richard looked at him.
And for the first time, I saw something in my husband's eyes.
Pity.
Not anger.
Pity.
"That's what they counted on.""
Weston looked down.
"I was stupid.""
I watched my son.
And the painful truth settled in.
He had not been the mastermind.
But he had still opened the door.
He had handed people the keys.
I walked toward him.
Everyone watched.
Weston looked terrified.
"Mom...""
I stopped in front of him.
"You hurt me.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
"No.""
My voice was soft.
"You don't.""
A tear slipped down his face.
"I was trying to make my own life.""
"I know.""
"I didn't think it was wrong.""
"I know.""
"I thought you would always forgive me.""
The honesty of that sentence hurt the most.
Because it was true.
He had believed my love was unlimited.
That no matter what happened, I would protect him.
And maybe I had taught him that.
"I love you," I whispered.
He looked up.
"But love doesn't erase consequences.""
He nodded.
"I understand.""
I stepped away.
Then I faced Richard.
"Tell me everything.""
He nodded.
"Three years ago, I discovered Thomas had been moving company funds through accounts connected to Helena.""
"How much?""
"Almost twenty million.""
A gasp moved through the crowd.
"He was stealing from us?""
Richard shook his head.
"Not just stealing.""
"What then?""
"Preparing.""
I frowned.
"Preparing for what?""
"Control.""
He looked at me.
"Thomas believed the company should have been his.""
My mouth went dry.
"My brother?""
"Your father left the company shares to you.""
"Because I built it.""
"Yes.""
"And Thomas always hated that.""
Memories surfaced.
Small comments.
Little jokes.
Things I had ignored.
"Marguerite got lucky.""
"Richard made her successful.""
"She was always better at relationships than business.""
I had dismissed them.
Family teasing.
Nothing more.
But maybe I had been wrong.
Richard continued.
"After I confronted him, he threatened to expose secrets.""
"What secrets?""
Richard looked at me.
"Your marriage.""
My stomach tightened.
"What about our marriage?""
He looked away.
And suddenly, I understood.
The pain I felt was different.
Because there was another secret.
One Richard still hadn't told me.
"Richard.""
He closed his eyes.
"There was something Thomas discovered.""
"What?""
A long pause.
Then:
"Before Weston was born, I made a mistake.""
The room became silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared.
"What kind of mistake?""
Richard looked at me.
"The kind that could destroy everything.""
My heart pounded.
"Tell me.""
He swallowed.
"Years ago, before I met you...""
I stared.
Before me?
"Richard.""
"I had a business partner.""
"Who?""
He didn't answer.
Because I already knew.
I looked at Helena.
Her face was expressionless.
And that told me enough.
"No.""
Richard nodded.
"Helena.""
A wave of whispers filled the room.
My entire body went cold.
"What are you saying?""
Richard's voice broke.
"Before you and I met, Helena and I were partners.""
"Business partners?""
"Yes.""
I searched his face.
"And?""
Richard looked at me.
"We made mistakes.""
Helena stepped forward.
"Tell her the whole truth.""
Richard looked at her.
"No.""
"She deserves to know.""
I looked between them.
"What?""
Helena smiled sadly.
"The Ashcroft fortune was not built exactly the way you think.""
My heart raced.
"Explain.""
Richard looked at me.
"I made one decision twenty-five years ago that I regretted every day.""
"What decision?""
He whispered:
"I protected you from the truth about how Weston was born.""
The room disappeared.
I heard nothing.
Not the guests.
Not the music.
Not the whispers.
Only those words.
*How Weston was born.*
I looked at my son.
Then Richard.
"What does that mean?""
Richard couldn't answer.
Helena did.
"Ask him who Weston's biological father is.""
Weston froze.
I felt something inside me shatter.
"No.""
Richard stepped forward.
"Marguerite, listen to me.""
"No.""
My voice shook.
"No, you don't get to do this.""
After everything.
After three years.
After the wedding.
After the betrayal.
This was the secret?
This was what he hid?
Weston looked at both of us.
"Mom?""
I turned away.
Because I couldn't look at him.
Not yet.
Richard reached for me.
I stepped back.
Then Priscilla laughed.
Quietly.
Everyone looked at her.
She smiled.
Because even after everything...
she believed she had won.
"You see?""
She looked around the room.
"Everyone has secrets.""
Her eyes locked onto mine.
"Even the great Marguerite Ashcroft.""
I stared at her.
Then something inside me changed.
Because she was right about one thing.
Everyone had secrets.
But only some people used them to destroy others.
I walked back to the microphone.
My hands were shaking.
But my voice wasn't.
"Priscilla.""
She looked surprised.
"Yes?""
"You made one mistake.""
Her smile faded.
"What?""
"You thought my secrets made me weak.""
I looked at every person in that room.
"You thought shame was stronger than truth.""
I looked at Weston.
Then Richard.
Then back at Priscilla.
"But the truth doesn't destroy families.""
I paused.
"Lies do.""
The ballroom doors suddenly opened.
A man in a dark suit entered carrying a briefcase.
He walked directly toward me.
"Mrs. Ashcroft.""
I didn't recognize him.
"Who are you?""
He handed me the briefcase.
"My name is Daniel Reed.""
He looked at Richard.
"I was the attorney who handled Mr. Ashcroft's final instructions.""
My fingers tightened.
"Final instructions?""
He nodded.
"Yes.""
Then he looked at everyone.
"Mr. Ashcroft left one final message.""
Richard's face changed.
"What?""
Daniel opened the briefcase.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
"My instructions were clear.""
He looked directly at me.
"This letter was only to be opened if the Ashcroft family was threatened from within.""
I stared at the envelope.
Because Richard's name was written across it.
But underneath...
was my name.
May you like
And one sentence.
*Marguerite, if you are reading this, the person you trusted most has already betrayed you.*
