Chapter 4: The Death Certificate That Lied

For three years, I had carried one memory like a stone inside my chest.

The hospital room.

The quiet beeping of machines.

Richard's hand growing colder in mine.

The doctor saying the words I never wanted to hear.

"Mrs. Ashcroft, I'm sorry.""

I had built my entire life around that moment.

Around the certainty that my husband was gone.

Now he was sitting across from me, alive, and a stranger's voice had just planted the most terrifying question imaginable.

*What really happened the night Richard Ashcroft died?*

I looked at my husband.

The man I had loved for thirty-five years.

The man who had held me through failures and celebrations.

The man who had promised we would grow old together.

And for the first time since I saw him standing in this library, I wondered if there was a part of him I had never known.

"Answer me," I said.

Richard didn't speak.

That frightened me more than anything.

"Richard.""

He looked down.

"I wanted to tell you.""

"But you didn't.""

"I couldn't.""

"Couldn't?""

My voice rose.

"You disappeared for three years.""

"I was trying to keep you alive.""

The words stopped me.

"What does that mean?""

Richard stood and walked toward the window.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke quietly.

"The night I died wasn't supposed to happen.""

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Explain.""

He turned around.

"Six weeks before my supposed death, I discovered someone inside Ashcroft Holdings was moving money.""

"Someone inside the company?""

He nodded.

"Millions were being redirected through shell companies. At first, I thought it was simple fraud.""

"And?""

"And then I found names.""

I waited.

"Vale.""

The room went silent.

"Priscilla's family?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the documents again.

Everything connected.

Too perfectly.

"But how?""

Richard walked back to the table.

"Helena Vale had been trying to regain her family's fortune for years. She had debts. Lawsuits. Investors demanding repayment.""

"And she targeted Weston?""

"She targeted the Ashcroft name.""

I swallowed.

"But Weston met Priscilla.""

"Yes.""

"And he fell in love.""

"Yes.""

Richard's answer was heavy.

Not angry.

Not blaming.

Just sad.

"She convinced him she loved him.""

My hands rested on the table.

"Does she?""

Richard looked at me.

"No.""

The certainty in his voice hurt.

Because I knew he had spent years studying this.

"Then tell me about the night you died.""

Richard took a deep breath.

"It started with a phone call.""

He sat down.

"Someone from my office contacted me. They said they found evidence that someone had accessed confidential family documents.""

"The trust?""

"Yes.""

I remembered the phone call.

The last normal evening.

Richard had come home late.

He had looked exhausted.

I had asked what was wrong.

And he had smiled.

"It's nothing, sweetheart. Just business.""

A lie.

The first lie he ever told me.

"I knew someone was watching me," Richard continued.

"So I created a plan.""

"A plan?""

"I needed them to believe I was gone.""

I stared at him.

"You faked your death?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"Yes.""

The word landed like a physical blow.

I stood.

"You let me believe you were dead?""

"I had no choice.""

"You keep saying that.""

"Because it's true.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"No, Richard. You had choices.""

My eyes burned.

"You could have trusted me.""

"I couldn't.""

The pain on his face almost made me stop.

Almost.

"Why?""

"Because they had access to everything.""

"Everything?""

"Your phone. Your emails. The company servers. Your schedule.""

He stepped closer.

"I didn't know who I could trust.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You couldn't trust your wife?""

"I trusted you more than anyone.""

"Then why leave me?""

His expression broke.

"Because I knew they would come after you next.""

I looked away.

The anger was still there.

But underneath it was something worse.

Understanding.

And I hated that.

"How did you fake it?""

Richard opened the folder again.

Inside were medical documents.

"One of my doctors helped me.""

"Someone else involved?""

"A specialist I knew from years ago.""

"Did the hospital know?""

"Only a few people.""

I looked at the documents.

A false death certificate.

A confidential medical transfer.

A new identity.

My hands trembled.

"This is insane.""

"Yes.""

"And you just disappeared?""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"I watched.""

The same word again.

"You watched.""

"I stayed close.""

"Where?""

"Europe mostly.""

"Europe?""

"I was tracking Helena's financial network.""

I thought about Priscilla's plans.

London.

The move.

The trust.

Everything suddenly became clearer.

"They wanted Weston to leave with her.""

Richard nodded.

"Because once he was overseas, they could isolate him from you.""

"And then?""

"They would convince him you were declining mentally.""

I closed my eyes.

The cruelty of it was almost impossible to process.

My own son.

My own family.

A plan built around making me disappear.

Then I remembered something.

The message.

The anonymous caller.

I looked at Richard.

"Who called me?""

"I don't know.""

"Someone knows you're alive.""

"Yes.""

"Who?""

His face changed.

"That's the problem.""

A knock interrupted us.

We both froze.

The library door handle moved.

Richard immediately stepped back.

Instinctively, I noticed something.

He was afraid.

Not for himself.

For me.

The door opened.

A young woman stood there.

She looked around thirty-five.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

A familiar face.

"Marguerite.""

I stared.

"Who are you?""

She glanced at Richard.

Then back at me.

"My name is Clara Bennett.""

The name meant nothing.

Until Richard spoke.

"She worked with me.""

My eyes narrowed.

"Doing what?""

Clara stepped inside and closed the door.

"Finding the people who wanted your family destroyed.""

I looked between them.

"You both knew?""

"Not everything," Clara said.

"Then tell me everything now.""

She nodded.

"Three months ago, we discovered Priscilla was not only interested in the trust.""

"What else?""

Clara placed a tablet on the table.

"Your company.""

I looked down.

The screen showed financial records.

Transfers.

Contracts.

Acquisition attempts.

My company.

My life's work.

"They planned to force you out," Clara said.

"Then use Weston as the legal owner of several family assets.""

"Because they thought he would cooperate.""

Richard nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at him.

"And now?""

"Now they know something went wrong.""

"What changed?""

Richard didn't answer.

Clara did.

"Your reaction this morning.""

I frowned.

"My reaction?""

"They expected you to break.""

She looked at my shaved head.

"They expected you to cancel the wedding. Cry. Accuse people. Create a scene.""

"And instead?""

"You stayed calm.""

A strange feeling moved through me.

For the first time that day, I realized something.

They had made a mistake.

They knew my money.

They knew my age.

They knew my reputation.

But they did not know me.

"I need proof," I said.

Richard looked surprised.

"Marguerite—"

"No.""

I opened my purse and removed the recorder.

"I need proof that no one can dismiss.""

Clara looked at the device.

"You recorded them?""

"For six weeks.""

Richard almost smiled.

"Still cautious.""

I looked at him.

"Still alive, apparently.""

For a second, neither of us spoke.

Then the tension broke slightly.

Almost.

Until Clara's tablet made a sound.

A notification.

She looked at the screen.

Then her face changed.

"What?""

She turned the tablet toward us.

A security alert.

Someone had accessed the Ashcroft estate's private files.

Not from outside.

From inside the house.

My blood went cold.

"Who?""

Clara zoomed in.

The access log showed the user.

A name.

A person with full authorization.

A person who had every reason to know where my secrets were hidden.

I stared at the screen.

Because the person who had just entered my private files was not Priscilla.

Not Helena.

Not a stranger.

May you like

It was someone I had loved my entire life.

*Weston Ashcroft.*
