Chapter 8: The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead
I stared at the name on my phone.
My father.
The words didn’t make sense.
They couldn’t.
My father was dead.
I had watched them lower his coffin into the ground.
I had stood beside my mother while she cried.
I had spent years accepting that loss.
But now his name was glowing on my screen.
A message waiting.
A ghost reaching back into my life.
Daniel looked at the phone.
His face was full of fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You knew.””
The accusation came out before I could stop it.
Daniel didn’t deny it.
And that hurt.
“You knew.””
“Emma…”
“You knew he was alive?””
Daniel looked down.
“I knew there was a possibility.””
“A possibility?””
My voice broke.
“My father has been alive this whole time, and you knew?””
“It’s complicated.””
I laughed.
Everyone had the same answer.
It’s complicated.
A phrase people used when the truth was too ugly.
“Everything is always complicated when I’m the one being lied to.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
He stopped.
The message was still open.
I pressed call.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then a voice came through.
A voice older than I remembered.
But familiar.
“Emma?””
I covered my mouth.
My knees almost gave out.
Because I knew that voice.
“Dad?””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Then he whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I started crying.
Not because I forgave him.
Because I didn’t know what I felt.
Anger.
Relief.
Pain.
All of it at once.
“Where have you been?””
His breathing shook.
“Somewhere I should have never gone.””
“You were dead.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe you were dead.””
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I closed my eyes.
The same words.
Again.
Protecting me.
“Everyone says that.””
“Emma, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice hardened.
“No, you listen to me. You don’t get to disappear for years and come back expecting me to understand.””
“I know.””
“Mom cried every day.””
Silence.
“She blamed herself.””
Another silence.
“And I buried you.””
His voice broke.
“I know.””
I wiped my face.
“Why?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Because Richard tried to kill me.””
I looked at Daniel.
He closed his eyes.
Like he already knew.
“What?””
My father continued.
“Your mother discovered what Richard was doing. She found proof he had stolen from the company. When she threatened to expose him, he panicked.””
I sat down.
“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””
“Because Richard had power. Money. Connections.””
“That doesn’t explain disappearing.””
“No.””
His voice became softer.
“It was the only way to keep you alive.””
I looked at Daniel.
The man who had spent years hiding beside me.
The son of the man who destroyed my family.
“Does Daniel know?””
A pause.
That pause said everything.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
Daniel looked away.
“You knew my father was alive.””
“I found out later.””
“When?””
He didn’t answer.
“When, Daniel?””
“Two years after we married.””
The pain was so sharp I almost couldn’t breathe.
Two years.
He knew for ten years.
Ten years of anniversaries.
Birthdays.
Christmas mornings.
He knew.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because by then I knew everything was wrong.””
“What does that mean?””
He looked at me.
“I realized my father had lied to me.””
I frowned.
“About what?””
“My entire childhood.””
The room became quiet.
Daniel sat down slowly.
“My father told me your family destroyed ours. He told me your mother stole from us. He told me you were part of the reason my family suffered.””
I listened.
“But when I found your father alive, I learned the truth.””
“What truth?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“My father was the one who betrayed everyone.””
My breathing stopped.
“Then why didn’t you leave?””
His eyes met mine.
“Because I was already in too deep.””
The answer broke something inside me.
“Into what?””
He looked at me.
“Into hurting you.””
I turned away.
My father’s voice came through the phone.
“Emma, you need to leave that house.””
I looked around.
Our house.
The place filled with memories.
“Why?””
“Because Richard never wanted the property.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He wanted something else.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What?””
My father took a deep breath.
“The truth about you.””
I froze.
Again.
Everyone kept saying the same thing.
Who I really was.
What I really was.
“What are you talking about?””
My father whispered:
“Your mother discovered you weren’t just her daughter.””
I felt cold.
“What does that mean?””
“She discovered Richard wasn’t your only connection to that family.””
I looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel suddenly stood.
“Emma, we need to go.””
I turned.
“What?””
His face had changed.
The fear was real.
Not fake.
Not an act.
“Now.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
Then another.
Daniel looked toward the window.
His face drained of color.
“They found us.””
My father’s voice became urgent.
“Emma, listen to me carefully. Do not let Richard get that file.””
“What file?””
The lights in the house suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Daniel whispered:
“He’s here.””
I held my breath.
“Who?””
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And answered:
“My father.””
