Chapter 6: The Man I Married
I read the document three times.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
A marriage agreement.
Not a prenup.
Not a normal legal document.
Something else.
Something colder.
Something planned.
My name was written at the top.
Emma Carter.
Daniel’s name was underneath.
But the date was the thing that destroyed me.
Six months before our wedding.
Before he proposed.
Before he told me I was the love of his life.
Before he looked into my eyes and promised forever.
He had already made plans.
I looked at Daniel’s mother.
“Did you know about this?””
She looked ashamed.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
Even though I expected it.
“Everyone knew except me.””
“Emma…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“No more excuses.””
My voice shook.
“I spent twelve years defending him. I told people they misunderstood him. I told myself he was different.””
I looked at the paper.
“But he was never different.””
Daniel’s mother lowered her eyes.
“I tried to stop him.””
“When?””
“When I realized he actually loved you.””
I laughed.
It wasn’t a happy sound.
“You think he loved me?””
She didn’t answer.
And that silence was enough.
I took photos of every page.
Every signature.
Every document.
Then I folded everything carefully.
I wasn’t thinking emotionally anymore.
I was thinking clearly.
Because Daniel had been planning this for years.
And if he could plan my destruction, I could plan my survival.
When I arrived home, the lights were on.
Daniel was waiting.
He sat on the couch.
Calm.
Too calm.
“You disappeared.””
I placed my purse down.
“I needed space.””
He studied me.
“Without telling me?””
I shrugged.
“I didn’t think you would notice.””
A strange expression crossed his face.
“You know I always notice.””
I almost smiled.
Because that was true.
Daniel always noticed everything.
Except the fact that I was no longer the same woman.
The woman who trusted him blindly was gone.
I walked into the kitchen.
He followed.
“Emma.””
I turned.
“What?””
He stared at me.
For a moment, I wondered if he knew.
If someone had told him.
If Claire had warned him.
Then he said:
“I’m worried about you.””
I nearly laughed.
“You’re worried about me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because you’ve been acting strange.””
I looked directly at him.
“Maybe I finally started paying attention.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
He knew.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
“What does that mean?””
I walked closer.
“It means I realized something.””
“What?””
“That people can lie to you while looking you directly in the eyes.””
His face became unreadable.
“Who lied to you?””
The question was almost insulting.
Because he wanted me to say it.
He wanted to know what I knew.
I smiled.
A small, cold smile.
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out.””
For the first time, Daniel looked nervous.
Then his phone rang.
He glanced at it.
Claire.
He rejected the call immediately.
Too quickly.
I noticed.
He noticed me noticing.
“Work.””
I nodded.
“Of course.””
That night, I waited until Daniel fell asleep.
Then I went downstairs.
I opened my laptop.
I needed one final piece.
The marriage agreement had a clause I hadn’t understood.
A clause about ownership.
A clause about inheritance.
I searched through old files online.
Then I found something.
A scanned copy of a letter from Daniel’s father.
The letter was addressed to Daniel.
The date was from before we met.
I opened it.
My hands went cold.
Richard had written:
“My son, when you marry Emma, remember the goal. The property will eventually return to our family. Do not let emotions distract you.””
I covered my mouth.
Because that meant one thing.
Daniel’s father had planned this before Daniel even knew me.
But there was another line.
A line that made no sense.
“However, if Daniel truly falls in love with her, we will have a different problem.””
I stared at those words.
A different problem.
What did that mean?
I kept reading.
The next sentence was underlined.
“Because if Emma discovers who she really is, she will never forgive us.””
My heart stopped.
Who I really was?
I looked at the screen.
My hands went numb.
All my life, I thought I knew my family.
My history.
My name.
But now I wondered if the biggest secret wasn’t about Daniel.
It was about me.
Then the laptop screen suddenly went black.
The power had been cut.
I turned around.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
Holding the unplugged cable.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t surprised.
He was calm.
Terrifyingly calm.
“I think,” he said quietly, “you’ve found enough.””
I couldn’t move.
Because for the first time since I caught him cheating…
Daniel stopped pretending.
And the man standing in front of me wasn’t my husband anymore.
He was the person I had been warned about.
He looked at the documents on the table.
May you like
Then back at me.
“Now,” he whispered, “we need to talk about who you really are.””
