Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone

I held the phone against my ear.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Sarah's words repeated in my mind.

*“Ask your brother's best friend, David.””*

It was impossible.

Not confusing.

Not complicated.

Impossible.

“Sarah,” I said slowly, “David is dead.””

The silence on the other end was unbearable.

Then she whispered:

“I know.””

My eyes moved to the photograph in my hand.

The man sitting beside Ethan’s hospital crib.

The man whose face I had spent the last few minutes trying to recognize.

It couldn’t be him.

It couldn’t.

“Then why did you say his name?””

“Because you finally deserve to know.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“After eight years?””

“Mark—”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You don't get to say my name like everything is normal.””

I looked at Ethan.

He was standing beside Claire, watching me.

Confused.

Scared.

“Who is the man in the photo?””

Sarah didn't answer.

“Who is he?””

Another silence.

Then:

“His name was David Carter.””

My heart stopped.

Not my brother.

Not my David.

She couldn't mean—

“What?””

“He used another name.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Sarah, my brother died eleven years ago.””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Your brother disappeared eleven years ago.””

The room went completely still.

I looked at Claire.

She looked away.

And that told me everything.

“You knew.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Mark…”

“You knew?””

She didn't answer.

I turned away from both of them.

“You all knew.””

“No,” Claire said quietly.

“Not everything.””

“But enough.””

I felt anger rising.

The kind that made it hard to breathe.

“My entire life has been built around people knowing things and deciding I wasn't allowed to.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Your father wanted to tell you.””

“But he didn't.””

“He tried.””

“He died.””

The room became silent.

Because nobody could argue with that.

I turned back to the phone.

“Sarah.””

Her breathing was uneven.

“I never wanted this.””

“That doesn't matter anymore.””

“I was trying to protect Ethan.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I looked at the little boy standing nearby.

“Everyone says they’re protecting him while they make him afraid.””

Sarah went quiet.

Then she said:

“You don't understand what happened.””

“Then explain.””

“I can't.””

My anger returned.

“Why?””

“Because if I say it out loud, everything changes.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Everything already changed.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Sarah whispered:

“David wasn't dead.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I sat down.

“What?””

“He was alive when Ethan was born.””

I couldn't process it.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Her voice trembled.

“It’s the only thing that isn't impossible.””

I looked at Claire.

She slowly nodded.

My stomach twisted.

“What happened to him?””

Sarah took a breath.

“David found out about Ethan.””

“Found out what?””

“That I didn't know who the father was.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Why was he at the hospital?””

“Because he was helping me.””

“Helping you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

The answer came quietly.

“Because he loved me.””

The room froze.

I closed my eyes.

No.

I didn't want to hear that.

Not from her.

Not about him.

“My brother was in love with you?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Before you ever met me.””

The pain wasn't just about the betrayal.

It was about realizing how little I knew about the people closest to me.

My brother.

My wife.

My father.

All of them had lives hidden behind my back.

“Did David know Ethan wasn't his?””

Sarah hesitated.

“Yes.””

“But you told him?””

“No.””

“Then how?””

“Because he found the records.””

“What records?””

“The hospital records.””

I looked at Claire.

She was crying now.

“What was in them?””

Sarah whispered:

“Ethan's biological father was listed under a different name.””

“Whose?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Michael Carter.””

I froze.

My father.

Again.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“My father was not Ethan's father.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you saying that?””

“Because your father believed he was.””

The room spun.

“What does that mean?””

Sarah's voice broke.

“It means someone changed the records.””

I stood.

“Who?””

She didn't answer.

“Sarah.””

“I don't know.””

“You always know.””

“No.””

Her voice became desperate.

“This time I really don't.””

I looked at the photograph.

The hospital room.

The people around Ethan.

All of them holding pieces of a puzzle.

All except me.

“Where is David now?””

Silence.

Then:

“He's alive.””

My heart pounded.

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I haven't seen him in eight years.””

“Then why tell me?””

“Because he contacted me.””

“When?””

“Today.””

The words made my blood run cold.

“Today?””

“Yes.””

“What did he say?””

Sarah started crying.

“He said someone was coming for Ethan.””

The house suddenly felt colder.

I looked toward the windows.

Toward the dark street outside.

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

“You’re lying.””

“No.””

She sounded terrified.

“Mark, listen to me.””

I didn't speak.

“Take Ethan and leave.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“Get away from the house.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever has been looking for the truth is not looking for answers anymore.””

I looked at Claire.

“What are you talking about?””

“Your father wasn't attacked because he discovered Ethan's father.””

“Then why?””

“Because he discovered who wanted Ethan hidden.””

The lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

The house went dark.

Ethan grabbed my arm.

“Mark?””

“I’m here.””

Claire immediately moved toward the windows.

“Turn off your phone light.””

“Why?””

“Because if someone is watching, we don't want them knowing where we are.””

My heart started racing.

The rain outside had stopped.

The silence was worse.

Then we heard it.

A sound from upstairs.

A door opening.

I looked toward the staircase.

Nobody moved.

“Did you lock the back door?”” Claire whispered.

“Yes.””

“The windows?””

“Yes.””

Another sound.

A footstep.

Not outside.

Inside.

Ethan grabbed my hand.

“Someone is here.””

I moved in front of him.

Claire reached into her bag.

I noticed something metallic.

“What is that?””

She looked at me.

“A key.””

“To what?””

She didn't answer.

Another footstep.

Closer.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“Mark.””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it my entire childhood.

The voice that called my name when I came home late.

The voice that laughed at my jokes.

The voice that held my hand at my father’s funeral.

But it was impossible.

“Mark,” the voice called again.

Claire whispered:

“He found us.””

I stared at the staircase.

A figure appeared in the darkness.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

My entire world stopped.

Because standing there was the man everyone said was dead.

My brother.

David.

He looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

And the first words out of his mouth destroyed the last piece of my reality.

“I’m sorry, Mark.””

He took a step forward.

“I should have told you the truth before I disappeared.””

I couldn't speak.

I couldn't move.

Ethan stared at him.

“Who are you?””

David looked at him.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he answered:

“I’m the reason your whole family has been lying to you.””

The room went silent.

May you like

And then he said:

“And I’m the only person who knows who your real father is.””
