Chapter 6: The Accident That Wasn’t an Accident

The phone slipped from my hand.

It didn’t hit the floor.

Rachel caught it before it fell.

But I barely noticed.

Because my mind was stuck on one sentence.

*The night Marcus rescued you was not an accident.*

The words echoed again and again.

Not an accident.

Not a coincidence.

Not fate.

Everything I had built my marriage on suddenly felt like a story someone else had written for me.

I looked at Marcus.

He wasn’t denying it.

That was the worst part.

The man who always had an explanation.

The man who could turn any argument into a misunderstanding.

The man who could make me question my own memories.

Was silent.

“Who is Claire?”” I asked.

Marcus looked away.

That was enough.

I laughed softly.

“Of course.””

He looked at me.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want another explanation.””

My voice cracked.

“I want the truth.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“Marcus, who is Claire?””

He didn’t answer.

Rachel’s expression changed.

“Who is she?””

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“She was Sophie’s friend.””

“That’s all?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“You’re lying again.””

He flinched.

Because we both knew it.

I had spent five years learning every tiny detail about him.

The way he looked away when he was hiding something.

The way his shoulders stiffened when he was cornered.

The way he paused before speaking when he was creating a story.

I knew him.

Maybe better than anyone.

And right now, he was terrified.

“Tell me about the night we met,” I said.

Marcus sat down.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not innocent.

Just tired from carrying a secret too heavy to hide anymore.

“I was looking for Sophie.””

I nodded.

“You already said that.””

“She had disappeared.””

Rachel frowned.

“Disappeared?””

Marcus nodded.

“She left the hospital after finding out I was with someone else.””

“Her sister?”” Rachel asked.

He didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“She took Lily and left.””

I looked at the little girl.

Rachel gently rubbed her back.

“She was scared,” Marcus continued.

“Of you?””

His eyes lifted.

“Yes.””

My stomach turned.

“Sophie was scared of you?””

“No.””

His answer came too quickly.

Then he corrected himself.

“She was scared of what I knew.””

I crossed my arms.

“What did you know?””

Marcus looked toward the window.

“The night before she disappeared, she told me she found something.””

“About your father?””

He nodded.

“She said she found records showing my father had been moving money through fake accounts.””

I frowned.

“And?””

“And my name was attached to some of them.””

The room became quiet.

I understood then.

This was bigger than cheating.

Bigger than lies.

Marcus had been hiding something that could destroy his entire life.

“What did you do?””

His face tightened.

“I didn’t know what was happening.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He looked at me.

“I was angry.””

“At Sophie?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“So you went after her?””

“No.””

“Then why were you driving around looking for her?””

He looked down.

“Because she sent me one last message.””

“What did it say?””

He swallowed.

“She said, ‘If you want to know why I left, find Nia.’”

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“I didn’t understand.””

“But you found me.””

“Yes.””

I stared.

“How?””

Marcus hesitated.

“I tracked her phone.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“You tracked your wife?””

“I was desperate.””

“No.””

Rachel shook her head.

“That’s not desperation.””

Marcus ignored her.

“I followed the location.””

“To where?””

He looked at me.

“The road where you were stranded.””

My blood ran cold.

“So you were following Sophie’s location?””

“Yes.””

“But Sophie wasn’t there.””

“No.””

“You found me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something close to shame.

“Because Sophie had been watching you.””

I felt sick.

“Watching me?””

“She knew you.””

“How?””

“She met you.””

I shook my head.

“You said that already.””

“She liked you.””

The words sounded impossible.

The woman whose husband I unknowingly stole.

The woman whose life was destroyed by Marcus’s choices.

She liked me.

“She thought you were different,” Marcus said.

I looked away.

“Different?””

“She believed you would expose the truth.””

I laughed.

“But instead I married you.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I stood there silently.

Thinking about every moment.

Every conversation.

Every promise.

Was I ever the person he loved?

Or was I just a person Sophie trusted?

“Did you save me because you cared?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

That silence hurt.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty was brutal.

Because a lie would have been easier.

“You don’t know?””

“I wanted to find Sophie.””

My eyes burned.

“And I was just there.””

He looked devastated.

“Nia…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You don’t get to say my name like you’re the victim.””

He lowered his head.

For once, he didn’t fight back.

An hour later, Claire arrived.

I almost didn’t recognize her.

Her voice on the phone had sounded older.

More fragile.

But the woman standing at my door looked strong.

She wore a dark coat and carried a small box.

She looked at Marcus first.

Her expression hardened.

Then she looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I nodded.

“I’ve heard that a lot today.””

Claire looked down.

“I know.””

She walked inside.

Rachel moved aside.

Lily was asleep on the couch now.

Three women.

One man.

One impossible story.

Claire placed the box on the table.

“Sophie kept this for you.””

I looked at it.

“For me?””

She nodded.

“She was afraid Marcus would destroy it.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I never would.””

Claire looked at him.

“You already did.””

The room went silent.

I opened the box.

Inside were documents.

A small flash drive.

And a letter.

My name was written on it.

Again.

Another person who knew I would eventually need the truth.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was Sophie’s.

*Dear Nia,*

My hands shook.

I continued reading.

*If you are reading this, Marcus finally failed to hide everything. I wish I could have told you myself.*

I looked up.

Marcus was watching me.

But I kept reading.

*You need to know something important. Marcus did not choose you randomly.*

My heartbeat increased.

*The night you met him, he already knew your name.*

I stopped.

The room blurred.

I read the line again.

*He knew who you were because he had been watching you for weeks.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“No.””

Claire looked at me sadly.

I kept reading.

*At first, I believed Marcus wanted your help. I believed he found someone kind enough to expose the truth about his father.*

A tear fell onto the page.

*But then I realized something was wrong.*

I looked at Marcus.

He looked pale.

*Marcus was not trying to save me.*

My breathing became shallow.

*He was trying to find a replacement life before his old one collapsed.*

The words cut deeper than I expected.

I turned the page.

There was one final paragraph.

*Nia, if Marcus tells you he loved you from the moment he saw you, remember this: love does not begin with a lie.*

I closed my eyes.

Because that sentence hurt more than any confession.

Claire spoke softly.

“There’s more.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She pointed at the flash drive.

“Sophie recorded something before she died.””

Marcus immediately stood.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

Claire’s eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

Marcus said nothing.

Claire stepped closer.

“She told me if anything happened to her, I needed to make sure Nia saw it.””

My heart pounded.

I picked up the flash drive.

“What’s on it?””

Claire looked at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“The conversation Sophie had with him the night before the accident.””

The room froze.

I looked at Marcus.

“The accident?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

My fingers went cold.

“What accident?””

Nobody answered.

Then Claire whispered:

“The one Marcus told everyone he wasn’t involved in.””

Marcus’s face changed.

And I knew.

Whatever was on that flash drive…

Was the reason he had spent five years trying to rewrite the beginning of my story.

I looked at the small device in my hand.

Then at the man I married.

May you like

And for the first time since I met him…

I was afraid of what I would discover.
