Chapter 5: The Night Everything Changed

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.

The sentence didn’t make sense.

Not emotionally.

Not logically.

Not in any version of reality where the man standing in front of me was the same person I had shared my life with.

“You weren’t supposed to survive that night.””

Marcus looked like he wanted to take the words back.

But words were not like objects.

You couldn’t pick them up from the floor and pretend they had never fallen.

I stared at him.

“What did you just say?””

His face changed.

“Nia—”

“No.””

My voice was sharper this time.

Stronger.

“I want you to repeat it.””

He looked away.

“I didn’t mean it like that.””

“Then how did you mean it?””

Silence.

That silence was becoming his favorite answer.

Rachel stepped closer to me.

“What night is he talking about?””

I looked at Marcus.

“Yes.””

My eyes never left his.

“Tell all of us.””

Marcus swallowed.

“The night we met.””

I felt a chill move through me.

The night we met.

The night I always described as the luckiest night of my life.

The night I believed fate had brought us together.

Five years ago, I had been driving home from work when my car broke down on a dark road outside the city.

I remembered standing there in the rain.

My phone had died.

My shoes were soaked.

I was frustrated and scared.

Then Marcus appeared.

He had pulled over in a black sedan.

He had offered me his jacket.

He had called a tow truck.

He had stayed with me until help arrived.

He told me later that he couldn’t leave me alone because “some people are meant to be protected.””

I thought it was romantic.

I thought he was my hero.

But now I was wondering why my hero had been there in the first place.

“What happened that night?”” I asked.

Marcus sat down slowly.

“I wasn’t driving by accident.””

My heart sank.

“What does that mean?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“I knew you were there.””

The room went silent.

I felt Rachel’s eyes move toward me.

“You knew?””

Marcus nodded.

“I was looking for someone.””

“Who?””

He hesitated.

Then he said:

“Sophie.””

The name felt like a shadow entering the room.

I stared at him.

“You were looking for your dead wife?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked down.

“Because before she died, she sent me a message.””

“What message?””

He reached for his phone.

Then stopped.

Like even showing me the evidence felt dangerous.

“She said she had proof.””

“Proof of what?””

His silence made my stomach twist.

“Marcus.””

“She said she knew what I had done.””

I frowned.

“What you had done?””

He looked at me.

“I had lied to her.””

“That’s not new.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“About Lily.””

I looked toward the little girl.

Rachel held her closer.

“What about Lily?””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Sophie wasn’t sure I was the father.””

Nobody moved.

The room felt frozen.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“When Lily was born, Sophie told me there was a possibility she wasn’t mine.””

Rachel looked shocked.

“You never told me that.””

“I didn’t know how.””

I looked at Marcus.

“So you abandoned a woman who had your child because you were afraid?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

“Then why?””

“Because I thought she was trying to trap me.””

My anger burned.

“You thought your pregnant wife was trying to trap you?””

“I was young.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were selfish.””

He accepted it.

And somehow, that made it worse.

“I believed she was lying,” he said.

“Did you ever find out?””

He looked at Lily.

“Yes.””

His voice cracked.

“The test came back after she died.””

Rachel closed her eyes.

“She was yours.””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at the little girl.

A child who had spent years living with the consequences of adults’ choices.

Then I looked back at him.

“And what did Sophie’s message say?””

Marcus stared at the floor.

“She said she was going to tell you everything.””

My heart stopped.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew about us.””

The room became quiet again.

I felt a strange numbness.

“Sophie knew who I was?””

Marcus nodded.

“She found out I was seeing you.””

“Before we were married?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she tell me?””

His expression changed.

Regret.

Real regret.

“She tried.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

“She found your number.””

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

That answer sounded like a lie.

But I didn’t interrupt.

“She called you.””

My blood went cold.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“She did.””

I shook my head.

“I never got a call.””

“I know.””

“Then you’re lying.””

He looked at me.

“I answered.””

The room stopped.

“You answered my phone?””

“It was your number.””

“When?””

“The night before our wedding.””

My mouth opened slightly.

The night before our wedding.

I remembered that night.

I had been at my apartment with my sister, drinking wine and looking at wedding decorations.

Marcus told me he was working late.

He said he couldn’t sleep because he was nervous.

I thought he was nervous because he was about to marry me.

But he wasn’t.

He was hiding something.

“What did she say?””

Marcus looked like he was reliving every second.

“She said she knew about you.””

“And?””

“She said she didn’t want revenge.””

I stared.

“She just wanted the truth.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“The truth.””

The word felt almost funny now.

“The woman who was supposed to hate me wanted honesty from you.””

Marcus lowered his head.

“She told me she was going to send you everything.””

“What everything?””

“Documents.””

“What documents?””

His jaw tightened.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He looked at me.

And I saw fear again.

Not the fear of losing me.

The fear of what I might discover.

“She knew about my father.””

I frowned.

“Your father?””

Marcus nodded.

“My father was involved in something illegal.””

I stared.

“What does that have to do with Sophie?””

“Everything.””

The room shifted.

The story I thought I was uncovering suddenly became much larger.

“What kind of illegal things?””

Marcus looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Convenient.””

“I’m serious.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

He was quiet.

Finally, he said:

“My father used people.””

I waited.

“He made deals. He manipulated employees. He covered things up.””

“That doesn’t explain Sophie.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Sophie found financial records.””

Rachel whispered:

“Records from what?””

Marcus answered:

“The company.””

His company.

The one he always described as his father’s legacy.

The one he spent years trying to build.

I felt a strange connection forming.

The lies.

The hidden apartment.

The secret relationships.

The night we met.

All of it.

Not random.

Connected.

“Why did you come to me that night?”” I asked.

Marcus looked confused.

“What?””

“You said you were looking for Sophie.””

“Yes.””

“But you found me.””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you know who I was?””

His silence was enough.

My heart sank.

“You knew.””

“Nia—”

“You knew who I was before you stopped.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

Rachel covered her mouth.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

“Why?””

Marcus whispered:

“Because Sophie told me she trusted one person.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“You.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

“She thought you were the only person who could help her.””

“No.””

“She had met you before.””

My eyes widened.

“What?””

Marcus nodded.

“You don’t remember.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I would remember meeting Sophie.””

“You met her at the charity event three months before we officially met.””

I froze.

A charity event.

I remembered.

A woman crying in the bathroom.

A woman who grabbed my hand and told me something strange.

“Please don’t trust people just because they say they love you.””

I had thought she was upset.

I had thought she was talking about someone else.

I never knew her name.

“Sophie…”

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

My hands trembled.

“What did she tell you?””

He looked at me.

“She told me if anything happened to her…”

He paused.

“She wanted you to know the truth.””

A painful silence followed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

My heart raced.

I answered.

“Hello?””

No one spoke for three seconds.

Then a woman’s voice came through.

A voice I had never heard.

But somehow…

I recognized the fear in it.

“Nia?””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Claire.””

I looked at Marcus.

His face changed instantly.

Because he knew that name.

“I was Sophie’s best friend.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What do you want?””

Her voice dropped.

“I found something Sophie left behind.””

I swallowed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“Proof that Marcus didn’t just lie to you.””

The room went silent.

“He planned everything from the beginning.””

I looked at Marcus.

He looked terrified.

And then Claire said the words that made my blood run cold.

May you like

“Nia… the night Marcus rescued you was not an accident.””

The call ended.
