Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside My Home

I couldn’t move.

I couldn’t even breathe.

Because standing beside Richard Hale was the last person I expected to see.

My own brother.

Ethan.

For a moment, my mind refused to accept it.

Ethan, who had been at my wedding.

Ethan, who held my children when they were born.

Ethan, who had sat beside me after our father’s funeral and promised we would always protect each other.

My younger brother looked at the floor.

He couldn’t even meet my eyes.

“Ethan?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Richard smiled.

“There it is.””

He stepped further into the room.

“The moment I’ve been waiting for.””

I looked at my brother.

“Tell me this isn’t true.””

Ethan said nothing.

That silence hurt more than any confession.

“Tell me.””

His jaw tightened.

“I didn’t want it to happen like this.””

I laughed quietly.

“You didn’t want it to happen like this?””

I pointed around the room.

“My wife was manipulated. My daughter was hurt. My company was attacked. And you’re standing beside the man responsible.””

Ethan looked away.

“I was trying to fix things.””

Richard laughed.

“Don’t give him too much credit. He was very useful.””

I looked at Richard.

“You used my brother.””

“No.””

Richard shook his head.

“Your brother used me.””

Ethan’s face changed.

“Richard.””

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

The tension between them was immediate.

That was when I realized something.

They weren’t partners anymore.

They were two people who had trusted each other for the wrong reasons.

My mother stepped forward.

“Ethan, why?””

He looked at her.

And for the first time, I saw pain on his face.

“You want to know why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because everyone got a piece of him except me.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“You were the favorite.””

The words shocked me.

“You’re serious?””

“Dad looked at you like you were the future.””

“That’s not true.””

“It was.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“He taught you business. He took you to meetings. He gave you everything.””

I stared at him.

“I was a kid.””

“You were his son.””

“And you weren’t?””

He looked away.

That answer was worse than anything.

“I spent my whole life trying to prove I mattered.””

I stepped closer.

“And you thought destroying me would do that?””

His eyes filled with anger.

“I thought exposing you would.””

“Exposing me for what?””

“For benefiting from Dad’s lies.””

I shook my head.

“You knew I didn’t know.””

“I know.””

The honesty was painful.

“Then why?””

Ethan looked at Richard.

“Because Richard promised me the truth.””

I almost smiled.

“The truth?””

I looked at Richard.

“That’s what you sell everyone, isn’t it?””

Richard didn’t respond.

“You find people with pain. You give them a story where they’re the victim. Then you convince them revenge is justice.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I’m done being careful.””

The room became silent.

For years, I had avoided conflict.

I had believed staying calm meant staying strong.

But I finally understood something.

Sometimes silence only protects the person hurting you.

I turned to Ethan.

“You watched this happen.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know about Nia.””

“But you knew Vanessa was helping Richard.””

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

He hesitated.

“Since before you married her.””

The words hit like a punch.

Before.

Before my wedding.

Before my children.

Before my entire life changed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I thought it would expose Dad’s crimes.””

“You could have told me.””

“You wouldn’t have believed me.””

“That wasn’t your decision.””

Ethan looked at me.

“I was angry.””

I nodded slowly.

“And my daughter paid for your anger.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Richard pulled out his phone.

“I think we’re wasting time.””

He tapped the screen.

“Because the board meeting starts in forty minutes.””

My mother looked at him.

“You still think you can win?””

Richard smiled.

“I already did.””

He looked at me.

“You’re emotional. Distracted. Damaged.””

He stepped closer.

“And that makes you weak.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

I picked up the folder containing the company documents.

“You spent years studying my father.””

“Yes.””

“You studied his mistakes.””

“Yes.””

“But you made the same one.””

Richard’s smile faded.

“What mistake?””

“You thought pain makes people predictable.””

I held up the documents.

“But it doesn’t.””

I looked at my mother.

“At some point, people choose what they become.””

Then I looked at Ethan.

“Even now.””

My brother looked at me.

Something changed in his expression.

Regret.

Real regret.

Richard noticed.

“You’re not seriously having second thoughts.””

Ethan looked at him.

“Maybe I am.””

Richard’s face darkened.

“You should think carefully.””

Ethan swallowed.

“About what?””

Richard smiled coldly.

“About what happens when everyone finds out what you did.””

The threat was clear.

Ethan had become trapped.

But before anyone could move, my phone rang.

Marcus.

I answered.

“Daniel, where are you?””

“Why?””

His voice was urgent.

“Because we found the missing piece.””

“What piece?””

A pause.

Then:

“The person who authorized the transfer of your company shares wasn’t your father or your mother.””

I looked at everyone in the room.

“Who was it?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Your wife.””

I froze.

I turned toward Vanessa.

She looked terrified.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

Because she knew what came next.

Marcus continued:

“Daniel, Vanessa didn’t just help Richard.””

“She signed the document that started everything.””

I stared at my wife.

May you like

And she whispered:

“I can explain.””
