Chapter 8: The Truth Beneath The Lies
For the second time in one week, someone told me my mother was alive.
And for the second time, I didn’t know what to believe.
I drove without knowing where I was going.
My entire life felt like a story someone else had written.
A father who hid secrets.
A mother who disappeared.
A wife who entered my life with an agenda.
A business partner who spent years planning revenge.
And three children caught in the middle.
I finally stopped at the old family house.
The place where I grew up.
The place where I believed I knew everything.
The door was unlocked.
That scared me more than if it had been locked.
Inside, everything was covered in dust.
Except one room.
The study.
Someone had been there recently.
On the desk was a photograph.
Me.
At sixteen.
The last year I saw my mother.
On the back was a message.
*I never stopped looking for you.*
My hands shook.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But familiar.
My mother.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then she whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
I wanted to run toward her.
I wanted to scream.
I wanted answers.
Instead, I said:
“Why did you leave me?””
Her face collapsed.
“I didn’t.””
I laughed bitterly.
“Everyone said you died.””
“I know.””
“Everyone lied.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She walked into the room slowly.
“Because your father was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
She sat down.
“Your father built his success on borrowed money. When things started falling apart, he made deals.””
“What kind of deals?””
“Deals with people like Richard.””
I listened.
“Richard’s father was one of the investors your father betrayed.””
My mother looked at me.
“But your father wasn’t the only one responsible.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
She looked away.
“Me.””
The word shocked me.
“You?””
“I helped cover it up.””
The confession was quiet.
Honest.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
I stared.
“Everyone keeps saying they were protecting me.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“And everyone failed.””
That was the first thing someone had said that felt true.
She continued.
“When I discovered what your father had done, I tried to fix it.””
“How?””
“I moved the remaining assets.””
“The company shares.””
She nodded.
“I put them somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
She looked at me.
“With you.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The shares Richard is trying to claim were never your father’s.””
She reached into her bag.
She pulled out a folder.
“They belonged to you.””
I opened it.
My name was on the documents.
Not my father’s.
Mine.
“You protected my company?””
“I protected your future.””
I looked at her.
“Then why disappear?””
Her expression changed.
“Because someone threatened you.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
Richard.
“When Richard realized I had moved the assets, he wanted leverage.””
“And Vanessa?””
My mother looked down.
“She was part of his plan.””
I felt sick.
“She really loved me.””
“I believe she did.””
That surprised me.
“But love doesn’t erase what she did.””
“No.””
My mother nodded.
“That’s why I stayed away.””
A sound came from outside.
A car door closing.
We both froze.
My mother whispered:
“He found us.””
I looked through the window.
A black SUV parked outside.
Richard stepped out.
My blood ran cold.
“How did he know?””
My mother looked at me.
“Because there is someone helping him.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she looked past me.
At the doorway.
I turned.
And saw Vanessa standing there.
Her face was pale.
“Daniel…”
Everything inside me went still.
“You followed me?””
“No.””
“Then why are you here?””
She looked at my mother.
Then at Richard outside.
“I came to warn you.””
A shadow moved behind her.
Richard’s voice echoed from the doorway.
“Too late.””
He stepped inside.
And beside him was someone I never expected.
Someone who had been beside me through everything.
Someone who knew every detail of my life.
Richard smiled.
“Daniel, meet the person who helped me from the beginning.””
I looked at the figure standing next to him.
May you like
And my heart stopped.
Because it was someone from my own home.
