Chapter 7: The Marriage That Wasn't An Accident

I read the message ten times.

Each time, the meaning changed.

Vanessa.

Chosen.

My marriage.

An arrangement.

A plan.

None of it made sense.

I walked downstairs.

Vanessa was asleep on the couch.

For a moment, I just looked at her.

The woman I married.

The woman who knew my favorite coffee order.

The woman who held my hand when my father died.

The woman who gave me three children.

The same woman who had secretly hurt one of them.

How much of my life was real?

I woke her.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes opened.

“What happened?””

I showed her the message.

The color disappeared from her face.

“You got it.””

My stomach dropped.

“You know about this?””

She sat up slowly.

“I was hoping you never would.””

The words felt like a betrayal all over again.

“What does that mean?””

She looked down.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I stepped back.

“Tell me.””

She took a deep breath.

“When I met you, I didn’t know who you were.””

“Then what?””

“Someone introduced us.””

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

I already knew.

“Richard?””

She nodded.

The room went silent.

“You met me because of him?””

“Yes.””

My hands trembled.

“Why?””

“Because he wanted someone close to you.””

I stared.

“So I was a target.””

“No.””

“Wasn’t I?””

She started crying.

“At first.””

That hurt more than anything.

“At first?””

She nodded.

“Then I fell in love with you.””

I looked away.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I don’t blame you if you don’t.””

She wiped her face.

“But it became real.””

“Then why continue?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at me.

“Of what would happen if Richard found out I stopped helping him.””

I remembered the photos.

The meals.

Nia.

“You were protecting yourself.””

“Yes.””

“And our daughter paid the price.””

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty was painful.

But it was the first real honesty I had heard from her in months.

The next morning, I met Marcus.

I gave him everything.

The messages.

The letter.

The information about Vanessa.

He read silently.

Finally, he looked up.

“Daniel, this is bigger than a custody case.””

“What do you mean?””

Marcus folded his hands.

“Richard isn’t just trying to hurt you.””

“What is he doing?””

“He’s trying to take control of your company.””

I frowned.

“How?””

“Your father’s old business records.””

I looked at him.

“What do they have to do with my company?””

Marcus pulled up documents.

“Your company was built from assets your father transferred before his death.””

I felt sick.

“Transferred?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Marcus looked serious.

“If Richard proves those transfers were illegal, he can freeze everything.””

My phone rang.

It was my assistant.

“Daniel, we have a problem.””

“What happened?””

“The board meeting was moved.””

“When?””

“Today.””

I stood.

“Who called it?””

A pause.

“Richard Hale.””

When I arrived at the office, everyone was already there.

Richard stood at the front of the room.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he owned the place.

“Daniel.””

I looked around.

“How did you get access to this meeting?””

Richard smiled.

“Because I’m now the largest shareholder.””

The room exploded.

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

He placed a document on the table.

“Check it.””

I picked it up.

My blood went cold.

The shares were real.

But there was something else.

A signature.

My father’s signature.

From years ago.

I looked at Richard.

“How?””

He smiled.

“Your father made many promises.””

I felt everyone watching me.

The man I trusted most in business.

The man who destroyed my family.

The woman who betrayed me.

My father’s secrets.

Everything was connected.

Richard leaned forward.

“You spent your life believing you were different from your father.””

He tapped the document.

“But you built your entire life on his lies.””

I left the meeting in silence.

Outside, Marcus called.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“We found something.””

“What?””

His voice was tense.

“Your father didn’t transfer those shares.””

I stopped walking.

“Then who did?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Your mother.””
