Chapter 8: The Promise Written in My Daughter's Name

"She told you Kerensa agreed to participate?""

My voice sounded unfamiliar, even to me.

Gideon Rusk answered without hesitation.

"That's what the agreement says. I didn't meet your daughter personally. Meliora assured me that she had your family's cooperation.""

I stared at the photograph of the contract.

"Did you know she was going to shave her hair?""

"No.""

"Did you know she was going to film her crying?""

"I knew the project involved family content. I wasn't told about any physical confrontation.""

"Then why are you calling me?""

"Because Meliora has missed two payments, and the video she delivered has created a problem. I need to understand whether she's still capable of fulfilling the agreement.""

I closed my eyes.

"My daughter is not a business asset, Mr. Rusk.""

"I understand your concern.""

"No, I don't think you do. Her name is on your paperwork.""

"Her name appears in the description of the proposed content series. That doesn't mean I own anything belonging to her.""

"Then explain what this agreement means.""

He paused.

"I funded Meliora's channel after she presented a business plan. She said she was developing a family lifestyle brand and had already secured permission from the relevant participants. The agreement required her to deliver a number of exclusive videos by the end of the quarter.""

"And if she didn't?""

"She would be responsible for repayment under the terms we signed.""

I looked at the document again.

"How much did you lend her?""

"Twenty-eight thousand dollars.""

The number hit me like a physical blow.

"Twenty-eight thousand?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"Over four months. The money was released in installments.""

I sat down on the bottom step.

Meliora and I had recently discussed cutting back on unnecessary expenses. She had told me she wanted to spend less on clothes and home décor because she was saving for a new project.

I had believed her.

I'd even transferred money into our shared savings account to make sure we could cover Kerensa's preschool fees and future expenses.

All the while, my wife had been borrowing money from a private lender to finance a business she hadn't disclosed to me.

"Did she use our shared savings as collateral?"" I asked.

"Not to my knowledge. Her personal guarantee is what I relied upon.""

"Then why does the contract mention my daughter?""

"Because the project was marketed as a family channel. I was told that she would appear in the videos.""

I gripped the phone.

"Appearing in a family video is not the same as agreeing to be humiliated.""

"I agree.""

His answer surprised me.

"Then why didn't you stop this?""

"I didn't know what was happening until the video was published. I saw the same footage everyone else saw.""

"Did you watch it?""

"Yes.""

"And you still expect payment?""

"I expect the contract to be addressed through the appropriate process. But I'm not asking you to pay her debt, Mr. Vale. I'm contacting you because Meliora told me you were involved in the business and that the two of you had agreed to the project.""

"I never agreed to any of this.""

There was a brief silence.

"Then she misrepresented the situation to me," he said.

I looked at the photograph again.

"Did she promise you anything else?""

"She said the series would include a dramatic family reveal. She described it as a story about parenting under pressure.""

"Did she mention me?""

"She said your work kept you away from home and that your return would create an emotional turning point.""

My stomach tightened.

"She knew I might come home early?""

"I don't know. She said she had planned around your schedule.""

I thought about the camera angles, the editing timeline, and the reaction video.

The pieces were beginning to fit together, but I was careful not to jump to conclusions. Meliora might have planned the haircut. She might have anticipated an argument. But I still didn't know whether she had specifically expected me to strike her.

And I wasn't going to claim certainty where I didn't have it.

"Mr. Rusk," I said, "I need you to preserve every message, email, contract, and video associated with this project. My lawyer will contact you.""

"That's reasonable.""

"And please don't contact my daughter or attempt to obtain any further footage of her.""

"I have no intention of doing that.""

The call ended.

I sat on the stairs until Elowen appeared at the top.

"What's wrong?""

I showed her the agreement.

She read it slowly, her expression darkening with every line.

"She borrowed twenty-eight thousand dollars?""

"Yes.""

"Without telling you?""

"Yes.""

Elowen sat beside me.

"Adrian, this is much bigger than a social-media argument.""

"I know.""

"Does Meliora understand that you've seen the contract?""

"I don't think so.""

I looked toward the guest room.

Kerensa had started moving in her sleep, her small feet pushing against the blanket.

I stood and went to check on her.

She opened her eyes when I touched her shoulder.

"Daddy?""

"I'm here.""

"Is it morning?""

"Not yet, sweetheart.""

She rubbed her face.

"Can I go home tomorrow?""

The question hurt more than I expected.

"Do you want to go home?""

She nodded, then hesitated.

"Will Mommy use the noisy machine again?""

I sat on the edge of the bed.

"I don't know what Mommy will do, baby. But I'm going to make sure we have a safe plan before you go anywhere.""

She studied my face.

"Can Grandma come too?""

"Grandma isn't here, sweetheart. Aunt Elowen is.""

"Can Aunt Elowen come?""

"Yes.""

That seemed to reassure her.

She closed her eyes again.

I remained beside her until she fell asleep.

The following morning, Margaret called with an update.

"I've reviewed the materials you sent. The agreement raises several questions, but we shouldn't assume that every clause is valid or enforceable. I'll need the complete contract and any related communications.""

"I have a photograph of the pages.""

"Ask Mr. Rusk to provide the originals through the appropriate channel. Don't sign anything or agree to repay any portion of the debt without advice.""

"I won't.""

She paused.

"There's another issue. Meliora has contacted me through a separate attorney.""

I straightened.

"What did she say?""

"She wants to discuss temporary arrangements for Kerensa and the removal of the public video.""

"Does she acknowledge what happened?""

"She acknowledges that a confrontation occurred. She disputes your description of the events leading up to it.""

I expected that.

"She also says she intends to remove the footage of Kerensa from the public platforms, but she wants the video of your confrontation to remain online.""

I looked out the window.

"Why?""

"She argues that it documents her experience of being assaulted. Whether the material should remain available is a separate question, and we need to consider your daughter's privacy as well.""

I understood that Meliora had a right to describe what I had done to her. I couldn't demand that she pretend I hadn't struck her.

But a public video that included my daughter, even briefly, raised different concerns.

"Can we ask for the footage of Kerensa to be removed without trying to suppress Meliora's account of what happened to her?""

"That's exactly the approach I'm considering. We can make a targeted request. We should also ask that the footage not be edited or redistributed in a way that exposes Kerensa further.""

"Thank you.""

After the call, I checked the public video.

The comments had multiplied overnight.

Some viewers defended Meliora, describing her as an overwhelmed mother. Others condemned her for shaving a child's head. Many condemned me for striking her.

A few people had begun sharing screenshots of Kerensa's face.

I reported those posts where possible and documented the links. I didn't argue with the people who had shared them.

Then I saw a new post from Meliora.

It was a photograph of her sitting beside a window, her hair arranged to conceal the shaved strip.

The caption read:

I made mistakes. But I will never apologize for standing up for myself.

Below it, she wrote:

Some people think money and power give them the right to control every part of a woman's life. I'm finally learning to speak for myself.

The post didn't mention Kerensa.

It didn't mention the video.

It didn't mention the debt.

But it was clearly aimed at me.

A comment appeared beneath it from Sabine.

Speaking up for yourself is not the same as using a child to prove a point.

Meliora deleted the comment within minutes.

Then she blocked Sabine.

I called my sister.

"Have you seen Meliora's latest post?""

"Yes," Elowen said.

"I also saw something else.""

"What?""

"Someone has uploaded a screenshot of the contract. It includes Kerensa's name.""

My stomach dropped.

"Who uploaded it?""

"I don't know. It's circulating in a private parenting forum. People are asking why a four-year-old's name appears in a business agreement.""

I opened the forum link Elowen sent me.

The screenshot was cropped, but the relevant paragraph was visible.

Someone had highlighted Kerensa's name in red.

The comments were furious.

How can you put a child in a contract without her understanding what she's agreeing to?

This is why family influencers need boundaries.

That poor little girl never asked to be part of this.

For once, the attention wasn't focused solely on my reaction.

But I felt no satisfaction.

Every new post meant more strangers discussing my daughter.

I called Margaret.

She advised me to preserve the link and avoid engaging publicly. She also said she would contact the person who had shared the document to request that the identifying information be removed.

I hoped it would work.

Then my phone rang again.

Meliora.

I answered because I wanted to know whether she had finally agreed to remove Kerensa's footage.

Instead, she said, "You told Gideon about the contract.""

"I didn't contact him. He contacted me.""

"You had no right to discuss my private finances!""

"Your private finances became relevant when our daughter's name appeared in your agreement.""

"You don't understand what I was trying to do!""

"Then explain it.""

She began crying.

"I was trying to build something. Something that was mine. I was tired of being the wife who waited for you to come home and the mother who had to make every decision alone.""

"You could have told me you were struggling.""

"You would have told me to stop!""

"I might have told you to reconsider borrowing twenty-eight thousand dollars. That isn't the same thing.""

"You don't believe in me!""

"I believed in you enough to support your channel. I didn't agree to let you film our daughter in distress.""

She fell silent.

Then she said, "I never thought you'd hit me.""

I closed my eyes.

"I know. And I was wrong to do it.""

"Do you have any idea how humiliating it was?""

"Yes.""

"Then why are you trying to take everything away from me?""

"I'm not trying to take everything away from you. I'm trying to protect Kerensa and make sure the truth isn't buried under a video designed to make strangers choose sides.""

Her breathing grew uneven.

"You've always thought you were better than me.""

"No, Meliora. I've always thought we were supposed to be a team.""

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered, "If I lose the channel, I lose everything.""

I leaned against the counter.

"What does that mean?""

She didn't answer.

"Meliora, what happens if you can't pay Gideon?""

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.

"He'll take the business.""

"And?""

She swallowed.

"He'll take the house.""

I froze.

"What?""

"He said the agreement gave him rights over the assets connected to the project.""

"Our house isn't connected to your channel.""

"He says it is.""

I gripped the phone.

"Have you shown the contract to a lawyer?""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because I thought I could fix everything before you found out.""

I looked toward Kerensa's bedroom.

For months, Meliora had hidden a debt large enough to threaten our family's financial security. She had put our daughter's name into a business agreement, filmed her distress, and published a video that exposed all of us to public judgment.

And now she was telling me that our home might be at risk.

I didn't know whether Gideon's claim was legitimate. I wouldn't take his word for it, and I wouldn't take hers.

But I knew we needed legal advice immediately.

"Don't sign anything else," I told her.

"Don't transfer money or agree to any new terms until you've spoken to an independent lawyer.""

She began to sob.

"Adrian, please help me.""

I stood in silence.

A part of me wanted to rush home, sit across from her at our kitchen table, and find a way to repair the damage.

Another part remembered Kerensa's trembling hands and the clippers buzzing beside her ear.

"I will cooperate with the lawyers to protect our daughter and understand the financial situation," I said.

"But I can't pretend none of this happened.""

She whispered my name.

Then the call ended.

That afternoon, Margaret received the complete contract from Gideon.

She reviewed it and called me back.

"The language about the house is not as straightforward as Meliora suggests," she said.

"Gideon may have contractual remedies against her, but he cannot simply take your home because he says he can. We need to establish exactly what was signed, whose assets are involved, and whether any security interest was properly created.""

"So our house isn't automatically lost?""

"No. Do not panic. We need a full review before drawing conclusions.""

I exhaled for the first time in hours.

Then Margaret added, "There's something else. Gideon supplied a copy of the original content proposal. It predates the haircut incident by several weeks.""

"What does it say?""

"The proposal describes a family drama series involving a mother, a daughter, and an absent father. It includes a planned emotional confrontation and a final reveal.""

I sat down.

"Does it mention shaving Kerensa's hair?""

"No. But the document names her as a featured participant, and it contains a clause stating that the creator will secure all necessary permissions before filming.""

I looked at the wall.

Meliora had planned a story about our family weeks before she shaved our daughter's head.

That didn't prove she'd planned every detail of the confrontation.

But it proved the project had never been an innocent impulse.

"Send me the proposal," I said.

Margaret promised to forward it through the secure channel.

Before we hung up, she said, "Adrian, be prepared for another development. Gideon claims Meliora has offered him an additional video to settle part of the debt.""

"What kind of video?""

"He hasn't received it yet. He says it's a personal confession involving you.""

My stomach tightened.

"Does he know what's in it?""

"Not fully. But he believes it may be the most valuable material she has.""

I stared at my phone.

Meliora had already published footage of me striking her.

What else could she possibly have recorded?

At 4:18 p.m., an email arrived from Gideon.

The subject line read:

*THE SECOND VIDEO.*

There was one sentence in the message.

Your wife says this recording will explain why she did what she did to Kerensa.

I opened the attachment.

The video began with Meliora sitting alone in our bedroom, facing a camera.

She looked exhausted. Her eyes were swollen, and her hair was tied back.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she looked directly into the lens.

"My name is Meliora Vale, and I'm going to tell you the truth about my family.""

I pressed play.

May you like

Her next sentence made me stop breathing.

"Adrian doesn't know what happened the night Kerensa was born.""
