Chapter 7: The Debt My Wife Had Hidden for Months

For nearly a minute, I stood in Elowen's kitchen with my phone pressed against my ear, listening to the silence left behind by Meliora's disconnected call.

The man's voice kept replaying in my mind.

Tell him the truth, Meliora. Or I will.

I looked at the photograph of the overdue payment notice on my screen. The company name was unfamiliar, but the creditor wasn't.

Dorian Pike.

The same freelance editor who had prepared the video of my daughter crying. The same man who had scheduled my wife's public humiliation of our family for seven o'clock.

What I couldn't understand was why an editor would be demanding money from my wife.

Unless the debt had something to do with the video.

I called Sabine.

She answered almost immediately.

"Adrian, please tell me you haven't contacted Meliora again.""

"I just received a call from her. There was a man in the background. He told her to tell me the truth.""

Sabine went silent.

"Was it Dorian?"" she asked.

"I don't know. But his name is on a payment notice I received.""

"Oh, no.""

My grip tightened around the phone.

"What does that mean?""

"I think you need to talk to Tamsin. She's the only person who might know the entire story.""

"Then give me her number.""

"I already spoke to her. She's willing to meet you, but she wants to do it somewhere public. She's frightened Meliora will accuse her of leaking private information.""

"Tell her I'll meet wherever she feels comfortable.""

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in a small coffee shop across town. Elowen had insisted on staying with Kerensa while I went. Before leaving, I'd explained that I was meeting someone who might help me understand what had happened, and that I'd return as soon as I could.

Tamsin arrived wearing a gray coat and carrying a large canvas bag. She looked younger than I'd expected, perhaps in her early thirties, with tired eyes and a nervous habit of twisting her wedding ring.

She recognized me immediately.

"Adrian?""

I stood.

"Thank you for meeting me.""

She sat down without taking off her coat.

"I need you to understand something before we talk. I should have said something earlier.""

"About the video?""

"About everything.""

A waitress approached, and Tamsin ordered tea. When we were alone again, she placed her phone on the table.

"I've saved the original messages from the creator group. I also have screenshots of some private conversations Meliora had with Dorian.""

"Why did you save them?""

"Because the first time I saw the footage of Kerensa, I thought it was a prank. Then I watched the longer version.""

She swallowed.

"That little girl was begging her mother to stop. Meliora kept telling us it was fine because she was the parent. When I realized she was serious, I told her to stop filming.""

"What did she say?""

Tamsin looked down at her hands.

"She told me I didn't understand the opportunity.""

I leaned forward.

"What opportunity?""

"She was in financial trouble. She'd borrowed money to grow her channel, and she'd spent more than she could afford on equipment, advertising, and a marketing package. She believed one viral video would bring in enough sponsorship money to cover everything.""

I thought about the overdue notice.

"How much did she owe?""

"At first, I heard her mention twenty thousand dollars. Later, she said the amount had grown.""

My stomach tightened.

"Where did the money go?""

"Some of it went to a marketing company. Some went to a private lender. I don't know the full details.""

"Was Dorian involved in the loans?""

"Not exactly. He introduced her to people who could finance creators who wanted to grow quickly.""

I sat back.

My wife had never told me about any of this.

We shared a mortgage, household expenses, and savings accounts for Kerensa's future. I'd always believed we discussed major financial decisions, even when we disagreed about them.

Apparently, I'd been wrong.

Tamsin unlocked her phone and showed me a message exchange.

Meliora had written:

I can't keep paying for growth that isn't producing results. I need something that breaks through this month.

Dorian replied:

Then stop making safe content. People don't share perfect families. They share conflict.

Another message followed.

Your husband gives you the perfect contrast. He works all the time, you carry the household, and everyone can see what happens when you finally snap.

I stared at the screen.

Tamsin scrolled farther.

Meliora had answered:

I don't want to involve Adrian.

Dorian replied:

You don't have to. Just film your own story.

Then came another message, sent several days later.

What if he finds out?

Dorian's answer was brief.

Then make sure the cameras capture what happens.

My hands went cold.

"Did she know he meant a physical confrontation?""

"I don't know," Tamsin said quickly.

"I don't want to claim that. But she knew he wanted a reaction. She knew conflict would make the footage more valuable.""

I looked out the window at the passing traffic.

I had imagined that Meliora's cruelty came from anger, resentment, or a desperate need for attention.

Now I was looking at something more calculated.

Someone had encouraged her to turn our family problems into a marketable story. She had agreed to film our daughter, and she'd continued even when Kerensa became frightened.

But I still had to face my own actions.

No matter what Dorian had encouraged, he hadn't moved my hand. Meliora hadn't physically forced me to strike her or shave her hair.

I'd made those choices.

And I would have to live with them.

"Do you have evidence that Meliora planned the haircut before I came home?"" I asked.

Tamsin nodded.

"She sent a message to the group that morning. She said she was going to try a dramatic discipline video.""

"What exactly did she write?""

Tamsin opened a screenshot.

Kerensa has been fighting every little instruction lately. I'm going to make a point about consequences today. If it works, I may finally have the footage I need.

I read the message twice.

"Did she say she intended to shave her head?""

"Not in that message.""

"Did anyone ask what she meant by consequences?""

"I did.""

Tamsin showed me her reply.

What are you planning to do?

Meliora had answered:

You'll see.

The conversation ended there.

I felt anger rise, but I forced myself to breathe slowly.

"Why didn't you contact me when you saw the preview?""

Tamsin's eyes filled with tears.

"Because I was afraid. Meliora was my friend. She told us you were controlling and that you might become violent if anyone challenged you. When I saw you in the reaction footage, I thought perhaps she had been telling the truth.""

I looked at her.

"And now?""

"Now I think she used what happened to support a story she'd already started telling. But I also think you need to take responsibility for your part in it.""

"I am.""

She nodded.

"Then I want you to know that I'm willing to provide the original messages to your lawyer. I won't post them publicly. I won't send the footage of Kerensa to anyone else.""

"Thank you.""

Tamsin hesitated before putting her phone away.

"There's one more thing.""

"What?""

"Dorian contacted Meliora after the video went live. He wasn't happy with the engagement.""

I frowned.

"The video was already getting thousands of views.""

"Yes, but he said the audience wasn't reacting the way they'd expected. Some people were criticizing the haircut instead of focusing on your reaction.""

"What did Meliora do?""

"She asked him how to fix it.""

I stared at her.

"And what did he tell her?""

Tamsin looked at me with an expression I couldn't quite read.

"He told her to release the rest of the story.""

"What rest?""

"The footage she hadn't published.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"There's more?""

"Yes.""

"What does it show?""

"I don't know. I only saw the filename.""

She opened a final screenshot.

The file was labeled THE TRUTH ABOUT KERENSA.

Beneath it, Meliora had written:

If I release this, nobody will ever question me again.

I stood so quickly that my chair scraped against the floor.

"Where is that file?""

"I don't know. Dorian has it, or Meliora does.""

I took out my phone and called Margaret.

I explained what Tamsin had shown me, including the messages about filming for a reaction and the existence of an unpublished video.

Margaret listened carefully.

"Don't attempt to access the file yourself," she said.

"Ask Tamsin to preserve the messages in their original form. I'll contact the appropriate parties through counsel and determine what steps are available.""

"Could the footage hurt Kerensa?""

"Potentially. We need to know what it contains before making assumptions. But your priority remains the same: protect your daughter and avoid further public escalation.""

When I ended the call, Tamsin handed me a small envelope.

Inside were printed copies of the most relevant messages, with the dates and sender names visible.

"I thought it would be safer to have these in case anything happened to my phone," she explained.

I thanked her and left the coffee shop.

By the time I reached Elowen's house, it was nearly ten o'clock.

Kerensa was asleep beneath her blanket, one hand wrapped around her stuffed rabbit. Elowen sat beside her, reading a book by the bedside lamp.

"How did it go?"" she whispered.

I showed her the envelope.

"Meliora had been planning a viral video for days. Dorian encouraged her to create conflict. And there's another file they haven't released.""

Elowen looked toward Kerensa.

"What does it show?""

"I don't know.""

I sat in the hallway and rubbed my face.

For the first time, I wondered whether the video might contain something that would change everything I thought I understood about my wife.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Margaret appeared.

Dorian has responded to our inquiry. He claims the unpublished footage contains material Meliora supplied to him before the incident. He has refused to provide further details without formal authorization.

I read the message twice.

Before the incident.

That could mean she had filmed something earlier that day. It could mean she had prepared a script. It could mean the footage was unrelated.

I couldn't know yet.

Then another message arrived from an unknown number.

I'm the person who loaned Meliora the money. You need to hear what she promised me.

The message included a name.

*Gideon Rusk.*

And beneath it was a photograph of a document bearing Meliora's signature.

The title read:

*PERSONAL GUARANTEE AND CONTENT PERFORMANCE AGREEMENT.*

I opened the attachment.

The first page contained a repayment schedule.

The second page contained a clause that made my stomach twist.

Meliora had agreed to deliver a series of exclusive videos by a specified date. If she failed, she would owe the full outstanding balance immediately.

But the final paragraph was what made me sit up straight.

It stated that the borrower had pledged certain future earnings and granted the lender a contractual interest in approved content deliverables.

I didn't know whether the agreement was enforceable. That would be for a lawyer to determine.

But I understood why Meliora had been desperate.

She wasn't simply chasing popularity.

She was trying to meet a deadline.

And the man who had financed her was now contacting me directly.

I typed a single response.

What did my wife promise you?

His reply came almost immediately.

She promised me a video that would make her famous. But that wasn't the only thing she promised.

Then he sent another message.

Ask her why she used your daughter's name in the agreement.

I stared at the screen.

Kerensa's name appeared in the photograph of the document, written in a section describing the intended content series.

My four-year-old daughter had been named in a financial agreement I had never seen.

I looked toward the bedroom door.

Then my phone rang.

This time, it wasn't Meliora.

It was Gideon Rusk.

And the first thing he said was, "Mr. Vale, before you accuse your wife of anything else, you need to know that she told me your daughter had already agreed to be part of the project.""

I stood frozen in the hallway.

May you like

Because Kerensa was four years old.

And she couldn't legally or meaningfully agree to the things her mother had promised.
