Chapter 8: The Truth Comes Out

Nobody moved.

The video continued playing.

Lauren stood in what looked like a hotel room.

The younger version of her looked confident.

Dangerously confident.

The person beside her was my father’s old business partner, Marcus.

I had heard that name before.

Years ago.

Before everything changed.

Lauren smiled in the video.

“David trusts me completely.””

Marcus laughed.

“He trusts everyone too much.””

My hands tightened around the flash drive.

My father looked like he couldn’t breathe.

“What is this?””

My mother whispered:

“The truth.””

The video continued.

Lauren sat down.

“If Rebecca comes back, everything falls apart.””

Marcus nodded.

“She knows too much.””

My stomach dropped.

They were talking about my mother.

About ruining her.

About removing her from our lives.

Lauren leaned forward.

“And once she’s gone, David will need someone.””

Marcus smiled.

“You planned all of this.””

“Yes.””

The room felt colder.

My father stood suddenly.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“Dad…”

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“She lied to me.””

My mother looked at him sadly.

“I told you.””

He covered his face.

For years, he had believed he failed my mother.

That she left.

That she abandoned us.

But the truth was worse.

She had been taken away.

And he had unknowingly helped the person responsible.

The video ended.

The screen went black.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father walked upstairs.

I followed.

I found him sitting on the edge of his bed.

A place I had rarely seen him look weak.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

I sat beside him.

“You didn’t know.””

“I should have.””

“No one can see everything.””

He looked at me.

“But I should have seen you.””

That hurt.

Because I knew what he meant.

Not just today.

Everything.

Every time Mia made a comment.

Every time Lauren dismissed me.

Every time I felt alone in my own house.

He should have seen it.

But he was trying to forgive himself.

And maybe I was too.

The next morning, my father called a lawyer.

Not because he wanted revenge.

Because he wanted the truth officially recorded.

By afternoon, everything changed.

The evidence from the video was enough to reopen old questions.

The financial records.

The fake documents.

The messages Lauren had hidden.

Piece by piece, the story she created began collapsing.

But Lauren did not go quietly.

She showed up at our house that evening.

Mia was behind her.

“You think you’ve won?”” Lauren asked.

My father stood at the door.

“No.””

She smiled.

“Good. Because you haven’t.””

She looked at me.

“You have no idea what your father is capable of.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Lauren laughed.

“Ask him.””

I looked at my father.

He looked uncomfortable.

That scared me.

“What is she talking about?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lauren said:

“Tell her about the night your mother disappeared.””

My father went still.

My heart started racing.

“Dad?””

He closed his eyes.

“I need to tell you something.””

The silence was unbearable.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“The night your mother left…”

A pause.

“I was not completely innocent.””

My entire world shifted.

“What do you mean?””

He swallowed.

“I made a choice.””

I stared.

“What choice?””

He looked toward the floor.

“A choice that changed all of our lives.””

May you like

And then he said the words I never expected to hear.

“I helped Lauren believe she could take your mother away.””
