Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Letter

“I know what really happened that night…”

Those six words were printed at the top of the page.

Below them was a sentence that made my fingers go cold.

“Your mother did not leave you because she wanted to.””

I stopped breathing.

For a moment, the sounds around me disappeared.

The cars passing outside.

The ticking clock on the wall.

Even my father asking, “Aaliyah, what does it say?””

None of it mattered.

I read the sentence again.

And again.

My mother.

The person I had spent years missing.

The person whose absence had shaped every part of my childhood.

I looked up at my father.

His face had gone pale.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Afraid.

“Dad,” I whispered.

“What does this mean?””

He reached for the paper.

I pulled it back.

“No.””

My voice sounded different.

Stronger.

“I need to know.””

He looked down.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he slowly sat on the couch.

“Aaliyah…”

I had heard my father say my name thousands of times.

But never like that.

Like it carried regret.

Like it carried a secret.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He rubbed his hands together.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

The words made my chest tighten.

“Protecting me from what?””

Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.

Three slow knocks.

My father looked toward the entrance.

The color drained from his face.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He stood.

“Stay here.””

That was the exact moment I knew something was wrong.

Because my father had never told me to stay away from anything.

Not storms.

Not difficult conversations.

Not problems.

He always told me to face things.

But now he looked scared.

The door opened.

And a woman stood outside.

She looked older than my memories.

But I knew her immediately.

My hand covered my mouth.

“No…”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Aaliyah.””

My knees almost gave out.

Because standing in front of me was the woman I had spent half my life trying to remember.

My mother.

Rebecca.

Alive.

My father stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

My mother looked at him.

“I couldn’t stay away anymore.””

I stared between them.

My brain could not process what was happening.

“You’re alive?””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

“You knew?”” I asked my father.

He looked at me.

And that was when I saw the truth.

He had known.

Not everything.

But something.

“You knew she was alive?””

“Aaliyah, listen—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You let me believe my mother abandoned me.””

My father looked devastated.

“I thought it was the only way to keep you safe.””

“Safe?””

The word came out like a laugh.

“From my own mother?””

Rebecca stepped inside.

“I need to explain.””

I looked at her.

“Then explain.””

She took a shaky breath.

“The night I left, I didn’t choose to leave you.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then why did you?””

She looked at my father.

And the silence between them said more than words.

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?””

My mother sat down.

“When I found out what your father was planning, I knew I had to disappear.””

My father immediately looked up.

“Rebecca.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“She deserves the truth.””

I looked at both of them.

“What truth?””

My mother stared at me.

“The night before I left, I discovered someone was stealing money from the company your father worked for.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“Everything.””

She looked toward the staircase.

“Because the person involved was someone inside our family.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she said a name.

A name I never expected.

“Lauren.””

My heart stopped.

“Lauren?””

My mother nodded.

“She was already manipulating things before she married your father.””

My father looked away.

I could see pain in his face.

“But why would she do that?””

My mother swallowed.

“Because she wanted a different life.””

The room felt smaller.

“She wanted your father’s money. His house. His reputation.””

I shook my head.

“But Dad chose her.””

My mother looked at him.

“Because she made him believe I was the problem.””

My father closed his eyes.

“I was wrong.””

Those words hurt.

Because my father was always the person who seemed certain.

Strong.

Unbreakable.

But now he looked like a man carrying years of guilt.

“What happened after you left?”” I asked my mother.

She looked down.

“Lauren threatened me.””

“With what?””

“She told me if I came back, she would make sure you were taken away from both of us.””

I felt sick.

“She threatened my child?””

My mother nodded.

“She said she had proof that would destroy me.””

“What proof?””

My mother looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“She had been planning everything for years.””

Before I could ask more, my father’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“What?””

I watched his face tighten.

“What did you say?””

A pause.

Then:

“No. That’s impossible.””

He ended the call.

I stood.

“What happened?””

He looked at me.

And I knew.

Something else had broken.

“Mia and Lauren never left.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“They went to the police.””

“Why?””

My father looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at my mother.

“They’re claiming Rebecca kidnapped you.””

The room went completely silent.

And then my father said the words that terrified me most.

“They’re trying to take you away from us.””
