Chapter 8: The Son Who Put His Father on Trial

The police station smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee.

I sat in a small interview room with Claire beside me and Mark across the table.

Samuel had arrived twenty minutes earlier.

He had brought copies of the financial records, the original photographs, and the preservation documents.

The USB drive remained sealed.

A detective named Laura Mitchell entered carrying a folder.

"Mr. Bennett?""

I stood.

"Yes.""

She shook my hand.

"I'm Detective Mitchell. I've reviewed the initial information your attorney provided.""

"Then you know my son has accused me of threatening him.""

"I do.""

"He's lying.""

She opened the folder.

"That's something we'll need to establish through evidence.""

I nodded.

She sat down.

"Before we discuss the allegation against you, I want to hear about the recordings.""

Samuel placed the evidence bag on the table.

"We recovered these from a storage compartment belonging to the deceased, Margaret Bennett.""

Detective Mitchell examined the label.

"Has the original device been preserved?""

"Yes," Mark answered.

"We documented its location and created a forensic copy. Nothing has been altered.""

"Good.""

She opened her notebook.

"Mr. Bennett, did your wife ever tell you she feared her son?""

I looked at the table.

"Not directly. But she left written evidence that she was frightened.""

"Did she ever accuse him of stealing?""

"Yes. In her private notebook.""

"Did she report it?""

"I don't believe she had the opportunity.""

The detective nodded.

"What about the medical records?""

I explained Dr. Morris's call.

I told her about Richard signing into the hospital under my name.

I described the recordings.

I did not exaggerate.

I did not claim to know what had happened to Margaret medically.

I simply repeated what the evidence showed.

When I finished, Detective Mitchell leaned back.

"Mr. Bennett, these allegations are serious. We will need to authenticate the recordings, obtain the relevant medical records, and interview the people involved.""

"I understand.""

She looked at Samuel.

"We'll also need the original property documents and the financial records.""

Samuel nodded.

"We have already requested preservation of several accounts.""

The detective closed her folder.

"Now, about Daniel's complaint.""

She placed a printed statement on the table.

I read it.

Daniel claimed I had become increasingly aggressive since Margaret's death.

He claimed I had confused ordinary family conversations with threats.

He claimed I had become obsessed with the house and had begun accusing innocent people of stealing from me.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

According to Daniel, I had threatened to harm him and his wife during the family gathering.

I looked up.

"That's a lie.""

Detective Mitchell didn't respond immediately.

"Do you have any evidence that contradicts his account?""

I thought of the living room camera.

"The security system.""

"Do you still have access?""

"Partially.""

She wrote something down.

"We'll request the recordings.""

Samuel leaned forward.

"There's also footage of Daniel pushing my client.""

"That will be useful.""

The interview lasted nearly two hours.

When we finally left, I felt exhausted.

Claire put her arm around me.

"Are you all right?""

"No.""

She nodded.

"Neither am I.""

Samuel walked beside us.

"Thomas, we have a difficult few days ahead. Daniel is trying to create a narrative in which you're unreliable. We need to respond with facts, not emotion.""

I understood.

But it was difficult not to feel angry.

My own son had accused me of threatening him.

The same son who had pushed me in my living room.

The same son who had apparently taken money from his children's future.

And now he was trying to convince the authorities that I was losing my mind.

At 4:30 p.m., Samuel received a call.

He listened for several minutes.

Then he turned toward me.

"Patricia has agreed to meet.""

"Where?""

"Her office.""

"Why?""

"She says she wants to explain the documents.""

Claire frowned.

"Don't go.""

Samuel nodded.

"We won't meet her without proper precautions. But I want to hear what she has to say.""

We arranged for the meeting to take place the following morning.

That evening, I returned home.

The house was quiet.

Ethan and Lily were staying with Claire's friend.

I went upstairs and stood outside Margaret's bedroom.

I wanted to hear her voice.

I wanted to ask why she hadn't told me everything sooner.

But the only answer was the familiar silence.

At 8:12 p.m., someone knocked.

I checked the camera.

Mia.

She stood alone on the porch.

Her face was swollen from crying.

I opened the door but kept the security chain attached.

"What do you want?""

She looked at me.

"Thomas, please. I need to talk to you.""

"About what?""

"Daniel.""

I stared at her.

"Is he here?""

"No.""

"Then speak.""

She glanced toward the street.

"Can I come inside?""

"No.""

She nodded slowly.

Then she pulled a folded piece of paper from her handbag.

"I found this in Daniel's office.""

"What is it?""

"A copy of the documents Patricia prepared.""

I took the paper.

It was a printed email.

The sender was Richard Cole.

The recipient was Daniel.

The subject line read:

*Capacity Assessment — Final Preparation.*

I read the first few lines.

The physician has confirmed that the evaluation can proceed. Once the assessment is filed, we can request temporary control over Thomas's financial affairs.

My hands tightened.

I looked at Mia.

"Why are you giving me this?""

She began crying.

"Because I can't do it anymore.""

"Do what?""

"Lie.""

I opened the door wider.

She entered.

We sat in the living room.

Mia looked toward the camera above the doorway.

"Is it recording?""

"Yes.""

"Good.""

She took a breath.

"Daniel told me everything was supposed to happen quietly. He said you would be declared incapable, the property would be transferred, and we would move before anyone could challenge it.""

I stared at her.

"And the accusation last night?""

She lowered her head.

"That was part of the plan.""

My stomach turned.

"Explain.""

She wiped her cheeks.

"Daniel said if you resisted, I should make everyone believe you had become violent. He wanted witnesses to see you as dangerous.""

I remembered her tearing her blouse.

The slap.

The screams.

"You did that deliberately?""

She nodded.

"Yes.""

"Why?""

"Because I was afraid.""

I looked at her.

"Of me?""

She shook her head.

"Of Daniel.""

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked, "What did he promise you?""

She looked down.

"That we would have the house. That the children would have a better life. That everything was already legally arranged.""

"And you believed him?""

"I wanted to.""

Her voice cracked.

"But I started seeing things. Money disappearing. Documents changing. Ethan crying because Daniel kept making him practice signatures.""

She reached into her handbag.

Then she removed a small black memory card.

"This is from Daniel's old laptop.""

I looked at it.

"What is on it?""

"Scans of the original documents. Emails. Bank statements. And a recording.""

"What recording?""

She swallowed.

"The conversation between Daniel and Richard about your wife.""

I felt my chest tighten.

"Margaret?""

Mia nodded.

"Daniel kept it because he wanted proof that she had agreed to the transfer.""

"Did she?""

"No.""

Mia began crying harder.

"She refused. She told him she would report him. Richard said they needed to make sure she couldn't interfere.""

I stared at the memory card.

"Did you hear the recording?""

"Yes.""

"What did it say?""

She looked at me.

"Daniel told Richard that if your wife survived long enough to speak to you, everything would fall apart.""

The room seemed to tilt.

I stood.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

"I was afraid nobody would believe me. And I knew Daniel would take the children.""

I looked toward the staircase.

"Where are Ethan and Lily now?""

"With your daughter?""

"Yes.""

"Please don't let Daniel take them.""

I sat down again.

"Why would he?""

Mia hesitated.

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Because Daniel has been planning to leave the country.""

I stared at her.

"When?""

"Saturday.""

"Why Saturday?""

"That's when the property transfer was supposed to be completed.""

I looked at the clock.

It was Thursday evening.

We had less than forty-eight hours.

"Where is he going?""

"I don't know. He has a passport and a bank account overseas.""

I took out my phone.

"Samuel needs to know about this immediately.""

Mia nodded.

Then she reached into her bag again.

"There is something else.""

"What?""

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Daniel standing outside the hospital.

Richard was beside him.

And Patricia was holding a folder.

On the back was a date.

The date of Margaret's death.

I looked at Mia.

"Where did you get this?""

"Daniel's laptop.""

I turned the photograph over again.

There was a handwritten note beneath the date.

Final authorization received. Medication records updated.

I felt my legs weaken.

Before I could say anything, the front door opened.

Claire entered.

She stopped when she saw Mia.

"What is she doing here?""

Mia stood immediately.

"Claire, I need to explain.""

Claire's face hardened.

"You accused our father of assault.""

"I know.""

"You tried to have him removed from his own home.""

"I know.""

"You helped Daniel steal from Mom.""

Mia began crying.

"I know.""

Claire stepped closer.

"Then why should we believe anything you say?""

Mia didn't answer.

Instead, she reached for the memory card and placed it in front of Claire.

"Because this time, I'm giving you the evidence.""

Samuel arrived twenty minutes later.

He photographed the documents, took custody of the memory card through the agreed evidence process, and contacted Detective Mitchell.

Before Mia left, he asked her to make a formal statement.

She agreed.

But just as she reached the front door, her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Daniel.

She answered on speaker.

"Hello?""

His voice came through immediately.

"Where are you?""

"Out.""

"With whom?""

Mia glanced at us.

"Claire.""

There was a pause.

Then Daniel said:

"You're lying.""

Mia closed her eyes.

"Daniel, we need to talk.""

"Have you given Dad the files?""

Nobody moved.

Mia didn't answer.

Daniel laughed.

"You're making a terrible mistake.""

"Please stop.""

"You think they're going to protect you? You think Dad is going to forgive you?""

Mia began trembling.

Then Daniel said something that made everyone freeze.

"Tell him to enjoy his last night in that house.""

The call ended.

Samuel immediately contacted Detective Mitchell.

I stood near the window, watching the street.

A black vehicle was parked at the corner.

Its headlights were off.

I couldn't see the driver.

Then my phone vibrated.

An incoming message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph.

Ethan and Lily were standing outside Claire's friend's house.

The picture had been taken from across the street.

Beneath it were six words.

*I know where the children are.*

Claire screamed.

Samuel grabbed his phone.

I stared at the photograph.

Daniel wasn't simply trying to take my house anymore.

May you like

He was using the children to frighten us into silence.

And this time, I wasn't going to wait for him to make the next move.
