Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew My Husband's Secret

Lauren Bennett stood in the doorway, breathing heavily.
Her dark hair was pulled into a loose ponytail, and her coat was wet from the evening rain.
She looked younger than I remembered.
But her eyes were unmistakably Robert's.
The same shape.
The same deep green color.
I stared at her.
"You're Lily.""
She looked at me.
For a moment, something softened in her expression.
"Yes.""
I couldn't find the right words.
She had been inside my home.
She had sat at my kitchen table.
She had helped me sort through Robert's belongings.
And I hadn't recognized her.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Lauren lowered her eyes.
"Because my father asked me not to.""
I flinched.
"My husband asked you to lie to me?""
"He asked me to wait until the investigation was safe.""
I laughed sadly.
"Your father was very good at making decisions for everyone else.""
Lauren nodded.
"I know.""
Then she looked at Ethan.
"Give me your phone.""
Ethan frowned.
"What?""
"The recording. You said you had another one.""
He shook his head.
"How do you know about that?""
"Because I heard it.""
Ethan's face changed.
Lauren opened the manila envelope.
Inside were bank statements, printed emails, and several notarized documents.
She spread them across Robert's desk.
"Your father made copies of everything. I have the original transaction records, the emails between Daniel and Sloan, and the documents showing how the transfers were approved.""
Harrison picked up one of the pages.
His eyes moved quickly across the text.
"These are emails.""
Lauren nodded.
"Between Sloan and Daniel.""
I leaned closer.
One message was dated six months earlier.
*From: Sloan Whitmore*
The property documents are ready. Harrison has signed the authorization. Margaret is still refusing to cooperate, so we'll need to move before she discovers the trust restrictions.
The reply came from Daniel.
Do not approach Margaret directly. We need her signature on the final assignment. Without it, the transfer can be challenged.
My hands began trembling.
Another email appeared.
*From: Sloan Whitmore*
What if she refuses?
*From: Daniel Mercer*
Then we use the alternative document. It is already prepared.
I looked up.
"What alternative document?""
Lauren slid another paper toward me.
It was a medical authorization.
My name appeared at the top.
Beneath it was a statement claiming I had voluntarily appointed Sloan as my representative for financial and property matters.
I stared at the signature.
It was supposed to be mine.
But it wasn't.
"I never signed this.""
Lauren nodded.
"I know.""
Harrison picked up the document.
"Who notarized it?""
He turned it over.
His expression changed.
"Victor Lang.""
I looked at Lauren.
"Who's Victor?""
"The attorney Ethan introduced Harrison to.""
Harrison sat down.
"How did you get these?""
Lauren hesitated.
"From my mother's belongings.""
I looked at her.
"Claire?""
She nodded.
"My mother kept copies of everything. Before she died, she told me where to find them.""
I felt a lump in my throat.
"She died four months ago.""
Lauren nodded.
"She had been sick for a long time. But before she passed, she told me the truth about what happened.""
"Why didn't she go to the police?""
Lauren looked down.
"Because she was afraid.""
"Of Daniel?""
"Of everyone.""
She explained that Claire had worked for Robert for years. She had prepared the original property trust and knew every detail of his business arrangements.
After Robert discovered the unauthorized transfers, he contacted her.
He asked her to help locate the original documents.
But Claire had already discovered that Daniel was using her old credentials to access confidential files.
She had confronted him.
And shortly afterward, her car had been forced off the road.
The accident had left her seriously injured.
She survived, but her health never recovered.
Before her death, she gave Lauren the documents and asked her to find Robert's family.
"She wanted you to know who your father was," Lauren said quietly.
"But she also wanted you to know that he hadn't abandoned us.""
I looked at the photograph of Robert and Lily.
"Did he visit you?""
"Yes.""
"Often?""
Lauren smiled sadly.
"Not as often as he should have.""
I swallowed.
"Did he love you?""
Her eyes filled.
"Yes. But he was afraid of what would happen if everyone knew.""
I looked away.
For a moment, I couldn't tell whether I was angry at Robert or grieving him all over again.
Harrison interrupted.
"What does Sloan have to do with the forged medical authorization?""
Lauren looked at him.
"She prepared it.""
"How do you know?""
"Because I found a voice recording.""
She pulled a small digital recorder from her coat.
"I made a copy before giving it to the investigator.""
She pressed play.
A woman's voice filled the office.
Sloan.
"Daniel, I need you to understand something. Margaret is becoming suspicious. She keeps asking about Robert's documents.""
A man's voice answered.
"Then we need to move faster.""
"What if she discovers the trust?""
"She won't. By the time she understands what happened, the property will already be under Harrison's control.""
Sloan laughed.
"And Harrison?""
"He's useful as long as he believes he's making the decisions.""
There was a pause.
Then Sloan spoke again.
"What about the money?""
Daniel answered.
"We'll recover it once the sale closes.""
I felt sick.
Harrison closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
Sloan lowered her voice.
"And what if Harrison finds out?""
Daniel laughed.
"Then remind him who signed the documents.""
The recording ended.
Harrison stood.
"She used me.""
Lauren nodded.
"Yes.""
He looked toward Ethan.
"And you knew.""
Ethan shook his head.
"I knew about the transfers. I didn't know they planned to take the entire building.""
Lauren turned toward him.
"Stop lying.""
Ethan's expression hardened.
"I made mistakes. I admitted that.""
"You didn't admit that you received payments from Sloan.""
Harrison turned sharply.
"What payments?""
Lauren opened another folder.
Inside were bank statements showing repeated deposits into Ethan's personal account.
The first was $20,000.
The second was $35,000.
The third was $50,000.
There were more.
"These were commissions," Lauren said.
"Sloan paid him for every document he delivered.""
Ethan shook his head.
"That isn't what those payments were.""
"Then what were they?""
"Business expenses.""
Lauren laughed bitterly.
"Your business expenses included a vacation in the Bahamas?""
Harrison stared at him.
"Tell me she's lying.""
Ethan looked away.
"You're making this worse than it is.""
Harrison stepped toward him.
"Did you take money from my father?""
"I borrowed it.""
"Did you forge my signature?""
Ethan hesitated.
Then he said quietly, "I didn't forge the first one.""
Harrison went completely still.
"What does that mean?""
Ethan looked at him.
"The first authorization was real. You signed it. The later documents were altered.""
Harrison's face crumpled.
He remembered signing the original authorization.
I could see it.
The realization that his own carelessness had opened the door.
"I trusted you," he whispered.
Ethan lowered his head.
"I know.""
Harrison shook his head.
"You stood beside me at my father's funeral.""
"I know.""
"You told everyone how much you respected him.""
"I know.""
"Then you helped steal from him?""
Ethan finally raised his voice.
"I was trying to save the company!""
"With my father's money?""
"Your father had millions!""
Harrison stared at him.
Ethan continued.
"He was going to leave everything to you anyway. I thought we could make the money work for us.""
I stepped forward.
"Robert didn't owe you anything.""
Ethan looked at me.
"Margaret, you don't understand how much pressure we were under.""
"I understand that you stole from a dying man.""
Ethan's face hardened.
"Your husband wasn't innocent.""
The room went silent.
I stared at him.
"What did you say?""
"He hid Lily. He lied to you. He kept secrets for decades. But somehow, everyone is treating him like a saint.""
Lauren stepped forward.
"Don't use my existence to excuse what you did.""
Ethan laughed.
"Your father was afraid of you, too.""
Lauren's expression changed.
"What?""
"He told Daniel that you were asking questions about the trust.""
Lauren shook her head.
"That's not true.""
"He said you wanted money.""
"You're lying.""
Ethan looked at her.
"Ask Margaret why Robert never told her about you.""
I stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Then I noticed something on the desk.
One of the printed emails had an attachment.
It was a photograph of a document with a handwritten note.
The note read:
Final authorization must be completed before Margaret's birthday.
I stared at the date.
My birthday.
The evening when Sloan had destroyed my cake.
The evening when she had lost her purse.
And the evening when the hidden key had exposed everything.
I picked up the paper.
"Why was this scheduled for my birthday?""
Lauren leaned over.
Her face changed.
"Because that's when they planned to get your signature.""
Harrison looked confused.
"How?""
Lauren pointed to the attached document.
It was an updated trust assignment.
It transferred the entire commercial property to a company called Whitmore Holdings.
The document was dated the following morning.
My signature was already printed at the bottom.
I looked at Sloan's email address.
Then at the message.
Once the party is over, Margaret will be exhausted. I'll take the paperwork to her house and tell her it's a routine estate update. She won't read every page.
I felt a wave of nausea.
The birthday party hadn't been about celebrating me.
It had been the final step in a plan to take everything Robert and I had built.
And Sloan had been planning to use my birthday as an opportunity.
Harrison stared at the document.
"She was going to steal the building tomorrow.""
Lauren nodded.
"Yes.""
I looked toward Ethan.
"Where is Sloan now?""
He glanced at his phone.
"I don't know.""
Then his phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
He read it.
And his face went white.
Harrison grabbed his wrist.
"What?""
Ethan slowly turned the screen toward us.
It was a message from Sloan.
The transfer has been submitted. Tell Daniel the original documents are no longer necessary.
I felt my knees weaken.
"Submitted where?""
Lauren quickly checked the paperwork.
Then she whispered:
"The county records office.""
Harrison grabbed his keys.
"We're going there.""
Lauren shook her head.
"You're too late.""
I looked at her.
"Why?""
She turned her phone toward us.
A confirmation notice was visible.
*PROPERTY TRANSFER RECORDED — 10:42 P.M.*
And beneath it was the name of the new owner.
May you like

The company Sloan controlled.
